Good case for G7

Fyi, the smooth case is actually on sale in the Canon showroom in HK for HKD160. I was looking for the Japanese version but the Canon salesperson had no idea what I was talking about and said the smooth ones were all the had in Hong Kong.

I'm not sure but it could be due to the fact that it's probably made in China, and maybe only for the Chinese markets. Camera stores here are also selling the bag, prices ranging from HKD 160 to HKD 190. In all honesty, the Japanese version is probably of a better quality in terms of finish, and I do know that some of my friends would prefer to buy that than the local version, even at a premium price.

From photos I have seen, the Japanese version looks like it fits better and subtle detailing like stitching is executed better. My only complaint with the Japanese version is the bogus tripod thread in the bottom turn-screw (which counter-turns when tightening the tripod and which has the large snap of the cover getting in the way); and the fact that the cut surrounding the lens barrel precludes easily affixing the barrel adapter. While true you can't close the case with the adapter on, you should be able to mount it, shoot, then remove it before closing the case.

5D and G7
Happy together.

Thanks for the help. I'd been to that site a few times without
realizing the photos were enlargeable.

Curiosity satisfied.
Just out of Curiosity which are you going with?

and Cabello is the one you've seen in the HK showrooms not only smooth

but does it also have the Canon logo embossed and not the silver badge we see on the others? I guess I'm trying to determine if the ones we see on Ebay are the official Chinese version or in fact knockoffs.

Can you please refer me to the seller?

Thanks,
DG
I got mine from here. No problems with delivery etc...

If I'd had the opportunity to see the Chinese and Japanese versions side by side, I'm not sure myself which one I would have chosen. At the time I bought mine, this was the only one in stock from the internet suppliers I found.

I also purchased this same case from this seller. I really like the case for the money and it arrived quickly from HK. Case fits the camera with no problems and looks good.

I went with the smooth leather version (Chinese).

Without contacting Canon (China/Hong Kong?) directly, I don't think there's any way to definitely determine it's 'authenticity'. The Chinese is at least as well-made as the ever-ready case I have for my Contax SLR, and doesn't give any quality-wise indication that it is fake.

Here's my theory - Canon Japan, Hong Kong and Australia thought that the (Sdc-50) ever-ready case would appeal to the most customers. Canon USA and everywhere else went with the (PSC-5000) 'pouch' style case. Canon China liked the Japanese/Australian version but thought it too expensive for the local market, and produced their own version with cheaper materials (but quite possibly sourced from the same OEM factory).

Some enterprising Hong Kong camera stores would then quite easily get supplies of both styles of case.

As far as build quality is concerned, questions about 'fit and finish' are probably due to the softer leather of the Chinese version. The leather of the Japanese/Australian version seems more rigid, and appears to be a more precise fit. I don't know for sure, as I haven't had the opportunity to compare them side by side.

Having said that, my G7 fits very snugly in it's case. I prefer the embossed logo to the shiny one, but might have been tempted to pay more for the more rigid leather of the Japanese version. Both cases undoubtably make the G7 much easier to grip, and offer convenient and effective protection.

I have this case and believe it is a real Canon product. There is no conclusive proof the Chinese made case is fake, though there are a few opposing opinions.

Vector, the one I saw (and bought) has the logo embossed. I checked the ebay link and it's exactly the same (from the photo).

I hadn't seen the pictures of that case on Ebay. It sure looks official, whatever that means. It's more expensive than I might have guessed being from China but it does include the shipping and thats huge, considering where it's coming from. Nice case. I think that is the style I'm getting not sure which version though, I've always been partial to textured leather myself. I wish there was a place to put an extra battery though and maybe a stick of memory but if I go on a trip I'd bring along a larger bag as well.

Having gotten my G7 today I'm feeling like dressing it up with a nice case and a screen protector ASAP while it's still pristine. I have a little Samsonite "Worldproof" case I got from Amazon but I'd sure like to stick with the retro theme of this camera. Ok back to the manual, I feel like I've got homework lol

Thank you for the reply. I hadn't seen that Listing and it's photo's. That case seems great. Exactly the same pattern just smooth vs texture and the badge.

It sure looks official to me and moreover it looks like it does the job just fine and looks good doing it. Thanks again

I'm sure it's official. A lot of international companies tend to have different variations of the same product for different markets, when their marketing departments feel that the product can be sold more at a certain price point and at a cheaper manufacturing cost. I am in the consumer food business and the company I work for has products made in the UK and Australia for those markets, and made in China for the Asian market with similar packaging (lower price points and just have to look at the small print). Only market that has a dedicated production run and special packaging is the Japanese market, where consumers are really fussy about presentation.

I know what you mean by dressing up ;-), I just got the G7 two weeks ago and am now in the process of buying the Raynox 7000PRO (smaller, lighter than the Canon wide converter) and would like to replace the silver ring on the front with a black one if I can find one.

Could someone tell me how this case works when you are shooting? Does the top flap rotate out of the way easily, or does it need to be removed to get both the lens and the LCD visible? Thanks, I'm thinking of ordering one.

Dana

That's going to be a case of personal preference.

It does rotate completely out of the way to allow the lens to operate, and the LCD to be seen. if I'm only taking a couple of shots and moving on, that's what I'll do.

However, I find it a little irritating to have it flapping around for any length of time, and tend to remove it and put it in a bag or pocket. It has become the lens cap I was so glad to have got away from.

The lower part really improves the handling and feel of the camera, and I only remove it to charge the battery, change the memory card, or to use a tripod.
