Hi!

My S5 Pro arrived today, from Warehouse Express in the UK.

Unfortunately it appears to have AF problems. I've just got back from my first test with it, and used the Nikkor 105mm VR.

The issue is that once I approach about 2x the minimal focal distance of the 105mm VR, the S5 Pro just won't attempt to AF. It doesn't even hunt. Its almost as if I didn't press the shutter button at all.

Once its gone into this situation, I need to manully override focus to infinity (it often won't focus on an object at infinity by itself) to force it to make an attempt to AF on any object at any distance.

The AF as a whole seems very hestitant and lacks the "confidence" of my D200. I'm shooting centre focus point, AF-S mode.

The behaviour is really noticeable - AF just doesn't make an seem to make the "effort" I'd expect. I can manual focus thanks to the focus override but I'm rather surprised by the behaviour i'm seeing.

Anyone else see anything like this?

Cheers!

I have the S3 and S5, and also Micro-Nikkor 105mm VR .. Nikon recommend using manual focusing for close distance. However, under 0.5 metres the focus range switch on the lens must be set to FULL.

If autofocus is fine with other lenses, then it's almost certain that it's not the camera at fault.

Try cleaning the contacts with a soft cloth, it's sometimes the problem.

Thanks I'll try a couple of other lenses. I don't think its a lens issue, as I have my D200 with me and it all works as expected.

My initial test shots look good despite the AF problems. Shooting JPEG Medium (6 megapixels) + RAW, I've got a number of JPEGs + 25 megabyte RAFs. DR on some swans I found looks very encouraging!

Silkypix 3.0.7.0 seems to do a very nice job of the RAFs as well.

Once in a great while my Nikon and Nikon based cameras don't seem to focus correctly.

what I have fould is that there is some "play" in the lens mount. Sometimes I have to twist the lens one way or another for the contacts to work. It doesn't take much but once the lens snaps into the camera mount sometimes the contacts don't meet.

Hope you get the problems solved ASAP! Good Shooting

The S5 can use any lens that will work on a D200, since fuji cameras use Nikon bodies.

The lens - if the macro, has a limit switch to help the lens focus faster from Inf. to close and then from close to closer.

If that is set to the second setting - to closest, and you are to focus at inf. - t won't.

Where was the linit switch set and at what distance if linit is on?

Not quite Jim,

Limit switch is infinity to close and infinity to closest

The limit switch was FULL.

The body definately has an AF issue - with my Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 mounted - as a test I left the lens cap ON. The body makes no attempt to AF at all.

On the D200 it zaps to infinity and back (as I'd expect) seeking a target with the lens cap on, before giving up.

It seems the body makes no attempt to AF quite often if it thinks the object is close. With an object at infinity, it often attempts to AF, but it seems hesitant. It seems to wait 1/3 of a second before even moving the lens. Once the lens moves, it seems to acquire AF mostly. It seems "laggy" if that makes sense.
