Hello All-

Long time lurker, first time poster. I've been eyeing up the Canon 350D and the Pentax K100D for my first DSLR plunge. However since this is the Pentax forum, I'll ask a Pentax related question! :)

[the Canon XT vs. K100D is a whole other debate going on in my head...]

I notice that Pentax is having a rebate right now on if you buy the body+50-200Lens (and other various combinations). I plan to take a vacation to Aruba in August and am really hoping to get some fantastic shots out of whichever camera I decide to go with. Now my question is, for my first lens...should I simply go with the K100D+kit lens (18-55) or the K100D and the 50-200mm lens? I'd like to hear from you guys with multiple lenses and see which you think would first benefit me for my first lens with the camera.

-Omesh

ps- I searched before I posted....but I wanted to ask anyways

Won't you need a wide angle? (18-55mm) I'd buy a kit lens before anything. The 50-200mm DA is awesome, but i can't picture going on vacation with that range.

I was afraid you guys would say that! I knew in the back of my mind that a 50-200 wouldnt be wide-enough for my purpose. But you have to admit the $150 rebate on a k100D+50-200mm lens is very tempting!

Are there any other, maybe non-pentax, wide'ish lenses you guys would recommend if I did go the k100D+50-200mm route. Just getting a feel for lenses other than the Pentax line that work well with the K100d...

Thanks guys!

I don't have one myself, but the Sigma 17-70mm is very popular.

I took the 18-55mm and my brand new K100D on a two week Eurotrip in August 2006. I found that most of my shots were actually at 18mm. The 18-55mm kit lens can be found for about $60 used, and it's pretty good for a kit lens.

If you order the K100D with the kit lens and the DA 50-200mm you still get the $150 rebate. I was worried that the part number on the rebate form (19016-camera only) would not qualify for the DA 50-200mm rebate.

Not to worry. When you open the box with the camera and kit lens, you find two boxes each with its own part number and UPC code. I received my rebate with no problem.

Regards - John

I too would go for the K100D + DA 50-200 and add the 16-45 later.

In fact, the 50-200 is my shortest lens right now. It's actually just fine for landscapes and most things. I'm surprised how little I miss my DA 40L and I don't miss my DA 18-55 at all. When I had the 18-55, I didn't use it because the quality was so bad.

K100D, DA 50-200

I think to not buy the 50-200 with the K100D with the rebate is crazy. They're essentially giving it to you for half price. I'm pretty sure you'll be able to get the $125 or so it costs you back if you resell it after the rebate is over, assuming they don't just keep rolling over the rebates for all eternity.

When the new DA* 16-50 comes out in a month or so I (and probably a bunch of others) am hoping for a glut of cheap pentax 16-45 and sigma 17-70s on ebay as people sell them off to pay for their new expensive heavy chunk of glass.

I did get the K100D + kit lens + 50-200. What I've recently decided however is that I don't particularly like having the break between the two lenses be at 50mm. I know technically that 50mm with the crop factor is in the tele range, but for me it's sort of right in the middle of what I need at any given time. So I think the sigma 17-70, in addition to being of higher quality, because it has significant overlap with the 50-200 is a better choice than the kit lens for the wide end.

What I personally decided was to get the tamron 24-135 as my main lens, and eventually get something better at the wide and tele ends than the kit lenses. I only just ordered the tamron yesterday off of keh so we'll see how that turns out. For the type of shots I generally take the 24 will be wide enough most of the time.

Wow thanks for all the replies guys! It looks like, due to the fantastic rebate, I'm going to get the k100D+50-200, and the add (at a later date) a wider lens. This seems to be what most of you are advising...

Basically, you can't go wrong with 50-200. It's an amazing lens for that price esp. since you've got SR in the K100D body.

Or, get the K100, with 50-200 lense, then pick up the 18-55 off of a well known auction site for less than $100.

I started with the 18-55 kit and it is just what I need for around the area shots. It is wide enough for me and is very clear. I added a Tamron 28-300 out of ignorance to what was out there and the need for a long lens. I have been very happy with it. I just added a 50-200 to my kit and have been loving with it non stop on the camera for the past week. It is great.

So, I think the cheapest, most versitile combo is the K100D, 18-55 and 50-200. Toss in some close up filters from a bargain bin and you can play with macro shots all day long.

( I know you can get the 16-45, or other lenses, but they are too much for me at this point.)

Hey everyone, newbie here with a K100D. I have the kit lens and the DA 50 -200mm lens.

I tried both lens and found that the DA 50 - 200mm is better. The pictures taken with kit lens were slightly dimmer as compared to the DA50 -200mm

For some comparisons, please have a look at my photos : http://www.flickr.com/photos/jasonloots .

I was recently in Bangkok for holiday and was using the 50 - 200 as my walkaround lens. Took around 400 shots, less than 50 were taken with the 18 - 55mm

I suggest you get the kit lens and the 50-200. The kit lens will be only 60 $ with the kit, you'll easely get that money back if you sell it.

I bought my k100d with only the 50-200, and after strugling doing landscapes with the 50-200, for about 4000 actuations, I eventually bought the kit lens lens anyway, I really needed the wide angle. And I bought a used one, for the price (60$) of a new one in the kit.
However, if I had the money, I would have bought a 400 $ wider lens.

Either way, shoot happily!

If possible i'd go the 2 lens kit with the DA18-55 and DA50-200.

The DA50-200 is the better lens, but when you want to shoot
something wider you won't be able to.

Otherwise get the DA16-45 and DA50-200

agreed !

I've had my first dSLR since january (body only) and the shortest lens until recently was 28mm from a sigma 28-200 or a 50mm f1.7. It drove me mad when I wanted to take pics in the house or some landscape situs, 28 just wasn't wide enough due to the 1.5x crop factor for dSLR vs 35mm SLR. Thankfully mr mrs just got me a DA16-45 for my birthday :-)))

It depends what you are taking pics of, but I would say if you can only get the one lens get the 18-55, otherwise it will drive you nuts not being able to go wide enough! I've seen some 2nd hand on eekbay if you're looking to save the pennies and take some time to work out what you'll make most use of in the future.

Having said that, not having something longer than 55mm will wind you up too ! Then again when I got my first camera I only had a 50mm prime lens and I coped, it made me think more about composition.

I can't comment on the sigma 17-70 as I don't have it but it seems well regarded from comments I've seen on the forum. Pentax have a DA17-70 on the plan, but no word when yet.

I know a someone who owns a K10D with a two-lens kit. Most of the time, he uses the DA50-200 than the DA18-55. Get the DA50-200 and add a 16-45 later on.
