I'm tired of all the time spent resizing photos one at a time for web viewing.

I'm looking for some software to batch resize the photos and I want to be able to set the long or short side of the photo and have the other side default to the appropriate size without my having to specify it. Any suggestions? I already have photoshop CS2 but didn't see a batch resize function which seems weird condidering the money it costs!

CS2 does do resize. I usually do it from the Bridge. Select the photos you want to resize, then go to the Tools menu:Photoshop:Image Processor and you will see the options you want.

I use BreezeBrowser Pro for nearly all my batch resizing needs. I also use it to create simple HTML pages for mass uploading and distribution of events to friends. I only have Photoshop 7, which has action capability, but I don't find it as convenient as BBPro.

I'm working on it...

All the above are great, but I had a similar problem recently as I needed to batch resize and convert RAW files.
The best product I've been able to lay my hands on is Capture One.

You can set how big you want the jpeg to pop out the other end, and it's pretty easy to use and once you click the button you can go off and make yourself a cup of coffee and leave it chugging away..

Try JAlbum with the BluPlusPlus skin at JAlbum.net.

It's cross platform and will resize, sharpen, watermark and build a web album in one pass. It also has FTP built in and will upload your photos the server and directory that you specify.

I even use it for resizing and watermarking even when not using the web page creation features.

Zoner Photo Studio can do that and it's also possible to create HTML galleries there too

I am not allowed to have Photoshop at work! Not a big deal but I hate not having it.

Irfranview is a GREAT tool for resizing, converting, and renaming images 1 at a time or thousands at a time.

So far I bet we have processed 5 million plus images in the last 6 months with it. We send command lines to it from VB, very fast if you let irfran process directories instead of single images at a time.

There are actions and scripts to use in Photoshop, I just can't think off hand the site names I did find them a bit slow.
I use:

The software is free for personal use and under 20US for commercial use. it has many benifits and is the fastest program I have found for batch resizing.

in photoshop cs2:

create a new action and start recording

file> automate> fit

select the size of the bounding box you want the images to fit in (900x900 etc would give you 900x600 or 600x900 for portrait orientation)

stop the action

file> automate> batch

your new action will be selected by default

you can figure out the rest (where to dump your new files...there's a button to select the folder)

there ya go...no need to leave photoshop...and it's pretty fast

CS2 Image Processor also lets you run Photoshop actions. I automatically add a little Shadow/Highlight adjustment, Sharpen, and add my watermark - all while I sleep or eat lunch.
