What's your favorite photographic subject matter?

Hi Cassandra,

Haven't posted in a while I tore a ligament off my back, very painful.Anyhow back to your inquiry I like portraiture first and foremost followed by animal shots.I live a stones throw from Brands Hatch motor racing circuit so I have just picked up a D30 in the hope of getting some action shots.Another favourite of mine is aviation shots and Gatwick is only half an hour away.I sold the 6900Z a short while ago to help finance the Canon system but I'm off to Vancouver Island in September to do some serious salmon fishing and intend picking up a S602 when it's released to use as a travel camera.--Regards,Nick.

My family: portraits of my son and wife. That's why I never post any. Totally boring to anyone else but me.
regards
Ian

Cassandra,

It was my kids but not it's my youngest the older 2 are not here to shoot anymore (Sons in college and daughter has move to her own place). Next would be my wife but she hates to have her picture taken. Animals, scenics and other nature, close ups sports and so on.

One thing I've never done before is shoot churches. We have many in this area and many different architectures. They seem to be quite a challenge and many of them have stained glass windows that also seems to ba a challenge.

I also want to do some panaramas this spring.

I have always been drawn to landscapes. Animals run a close second.

I also enjoy giving myself assignments that are just for fun or to aid in improving my technique. Some of these assignments seem to never end. For 25 years I have attempted to make beautiful portraits of subjects that most people think of as ugly.

I also have spent years on what I usually refer to as my sign collection. It consists of photographs of various signs that, by camera position, exposure or otherwise, I can make unusual, comical or somehow strangely interesting. I don't allow myself to do this by the use of any on-camera filters or by means of post-processing adjustment of any kind.

With me it has changed as I moved through stages of life. In 1969, single, with a new Pentax SLR it was candid portraits at parties using available light and Tri-X pan pushed to 1600 ASA. Then marriage, family portraits, scenery, anything, mostly Ektachrome slide film. Then Kids - how could we have generated so many photo albums??? Mostly Kodacolour negative film - easy copies for the grandparents etc.

Digital has revived my interest in photography due to the immediacy of creating a product and my total control over the process. Still do portraits, macro, scenery. But the camera is always with me now - you never know what new and interesting shot you can try. And it doesn't cost anything to experiment, apart from your own time.

I have given myself the challenge of being successful creating and selling large panoramas. I've learnt a lot over 18 months (and spent a lot on inkjet cartridges!!). Scenery has become a major focus.

So what else is my favourite subject matter? I guess anything that takes my interest, has colour or lighting effects, or is a difficult challenge. I even have a growing collection of interesting and colourful graffiti.

Practice, practice, practice, shoot, shoot, shoot...... One day I might get a prize winning shot.... but who cares if you're having fun?

Hi Cassandra...

I guess for me it would have to be Dogs and Fungus. But I really am enjoying all forms of nature photography and have developed an interest in street scenes as well. I also like the challenge of sports photography.

I guess I just can't narrow it down.

Good question.

I want to see some of those sign shots that the other poster mentioned.

This is a hard one. I suppose if I had to pick something , it would be landscapes and flower/insect macros. But carrying the camera around helps me to expand my horizons. Some days it might be bridges, another day it might be fire trucks. Neon signs are fun, too. When I'm on vacation sometimes I just concentrate more on getting as many shots as I can just to remember the wonderful time. So I guess I really don't have favorites... taking pictures of just about anything these days is fun. :-)--Best Regards,Todd MedleyRedmond, WA http://public.fotki.com/wagatorfan/

I too favour the landscape photography. The one thing that really usually excites me are sunsets and sunrises. I just love the colours they bring.

Currently it's mostly macros of flowers and general photography of gardens/landscapes. I also like cars and in the past I did semi-pro motorsport and classic car event photography. With digital I must admit I've broadened my subject matter quite a bit - not having to worry about film costs means I can experiment with subjects and techniques I've never done before, such as abstracts, cityscapes/architecture and animals & pets. I'd like to start doing studio still life photography at some point eventually too.

Only things I don't really like doing are portraiture and street photography - I think it's probably because I hate being in front of a camera myself and can't really believe that some people actually don't mind or even enjoy being photographed!! :-)

I must say buying the 6900 completely fired me up on photography again after a few years where I hardly did any, so much so that I've now got a Canon D60 on order so I can start using my SLR lenses with digital too :-)

Caroline

Hi Cassandra,

Good question. My wife, our dogs, friends, candids of people, architecture, travel, and I hope one day to have a studio set-up to do artistic portraits.

Regards,

Dan

I dont get many pictures taken. Seems Im always looking for something that wasnt there 5 minutes ago, will be gone 5 minutes from now, and may never be there again. Those once in a life time things. Big or small, mundane or gripping, dont matter as much as the uniqueness.

I only wish I had better skills to take better advantage of these fleeting moments of time.

Landscapes especialy local ones in different lights/times of day. I love taking lots of photographs while on holiday especially of people on the streets. I love the way that light changes a scene so much. Recently I waited a whole week to take a picture of Warwick castle during sunny break in stormy weather. It lasted 15 minutes but I got the shot.

I'm hopeless at portraits and reckon I would need a studio setup (no chance) to do it justce.

Hey does anyone know how to shoot portraits without all the razamataz?
