707 for 499 (yep 499)

Gary,
If you still have a copy of the ad, can you email it to me? Sounds like a plan!

Thanks Carol
Go to Barnes and Nobel, purchase the magazine Digital Camera Dec
2000 issue with a picture of the 5 mega pixel showdown on the
cover. On page 75. there is an ad for a 707 in the upper left hand
corner for 499. Take that ad to Sears, Wal-mart, Best Buy, Circuit
City or anywhere that does price matching.

I went to my local Sears store. For 77 more dollars, I purchased a
over the counter replacement warranty (two years) that will give me
a new camera if mine ever fails to work properly, no questions
asked. For 576 dollars I have what most people pay twice that for.
Do what I did and you can have one also.

I'll probably be sending off a price match request form. We'll see how they do. They do offer the F707 on their web site. Not sure about the S85.

Matt
I had no Idea I would have started such a fuss by my walking into a
Sears store and retating my story here. I have been called
everything from a god to the evel one. All I wanted was a deal on
a camera. I see several people here have done like myself and got
a deal on a camera. I just found out that Office Max also price
matches. Order it online, pay their price, then fill out a form
and submit it and your refund arrives in a week. I like this
better because you have the upper hand by already having the
camera. Their price matching policy is very clear and it works
just like Sears without the queezy feeling like you are trying to
get away with something by finding the right store or the right
employee. Sears seems to have a weak policy and not consistant.
Office Max will be my next camera outlet. I think I want an e10 to
compair to my e20. Sometimes I want faster speed at the option of
less pixles.

Carol,

Read my message in this link:

Forget about chasing the low price from that ad and go for the legit online vendors that Sears is accepting. It's still a great bargain and you won't shoot yourself in the foot by going for the lowest price.

Good luck!

They won't even tell you if they'll do the 115% price match guarantee until after you've bought the camera.

I then asked them about their return policy if I bought the camera and then they wouldn't price match it. I was directed to a link that contained this.

"OfficeMax.com will not accept returns of opened digital cameras or software packages unless defective."

So, I guess I'd have to buy it, leave it sealed, and then hope that they'd honor the 115% price match policy within 14 days. Interesting.

I just went to B&N bought the Digital Camera magazine dated 02/28/02. Sure enough, P75, A&M posted the 707 for $499. Interestingly, the f505 is $609. A mistake???? Let's see what Sears will say when I take it to Sears today.

Lam
I imagine most large public librarys have a copy, or Barns & Nobel
is where I got it last week or so. The magazine was a little old
when I purchased it. I was afraid Sears was going to reject my
claim because the magazine was two months old. They did not look
for a date.

I have an e20, an e100 and now this sony 707. I like the 707 the
best of the three and the best price. I could get 5 707's for what
I have in my e20 with a few accessories. The battery pack is cool,
but it dosen't make the pictures better. If I had any brains, I
would send my e20 back, eat the 15% restocking fee and be satisfied
with my 707.

the packrat that I am, I found my Dec issue of Digital Camera and
sure enough..on pg 75, there it is.....F707 for $499. Off to Sears
tomorrow to check on a pm. The Houston stores are not so likely to
match prices as I hear other parts of the country are. Guess we
will see...Can't wait. Thanks for the info...

Not to be a wise a$$, but I would bet good money you get laughed out of the store. ANy product they carry at half the price? Nope, won't happen. If it does there will be an unemployed salesman by next week.

Well, not really. Here is what happened: I brought the magazine to Sears (after calling several stores, some don't honor AM, some do). The sale guy agree to do price match with any price as long as AM confirm the camera is in stock and at that price. (If A&M honor their own ad, I would have get it for $499, but..) He then called AM, they said the F707 is selling for $669.00 (as their website said). I figured it is still a huge bargain as I can save > $300 bucks. I went for it.
Just brought it home and haven't open it yet.

Sorry, I don't have a scanner. But I'll try to use the F707 to take a picture of the ad and post here.

Just got my 707 from sears. They matched the price A&M told them. As a rule of thumb, they have to call the "competitor" to confirm the price and make sure it's in stock. Therefore, it's unlikely that you will be able to get it for $499 b/c A&M will never honor their ad (even though it clearly said on the ad: F707 for $499, I honestly think it's a mistake on their side). I think Gary got lucky !!!

Anyhow, A&M said they have the F707 instock for $699. Sears matched it + the S&H for about $39, overall, I still saved > $300 bucks.

So no sweet deal here since A&M will sell it for $669 anyway plus no tax. However, I prepered to pay the extra $50 tax and be with a local store so I can return it later if needed be.

Staples.com also does in-store price match. Unfortunately, they don't carry the F707, only S75 and 85.

They handled all in store. The guy made a phone call to A&M and that was it.

I just canceled my order with A&M for the 707 for $669. They charge extra for a standard warranty and they are grey market imports. With the added charges you are back to square one. Anybody know of any good reliable sources for a good deal on this camera? Is Sears still doing the price matching?

Thanks, Bruce

Okay ... so I read all these posts yesterday, and I've been wanting a 707 for a while. I went to the A&M page, they were selling it for $668 + $33 sh&H. I printed out the order form and brought it to Sears last night after work.

I presented the printout to the salesman, and he said he had to have his manager approve it first. He disappeared and came back with his manager about 20 minutes later. The manger (and the salesman) were both very friendly and helpful. But the manager explained that he faxed the order form in but that they might not get back to him for 3 days, as they were researching A&M. He told then that he had called A&M and that if you order from them and you send it back, that they charge a 15% restocking fee. He said that he would sell it to me that night, but that he had to add the 15% restocking fee since that's something that A&M charges, but that Sears doesn't. I don't quite remember the logic, but he said that's their policy. That added around $100. Since it was in Jersey City, the tax rate was only 3%. So it came to around $800. It wasn't as cheap as some other people ended up getting, but I figured it was the best deal I could get without buying some grey market version from A&M ... so I decided to get it.

This morning I got an e-mail from the PriceMatch center (I guess the salesman put my e-mail address on his PriceMatch request). It reads:
••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

Thank you for contacting Sears Online. You have requested that we match a price, which you may have found on a competitor's website. Our online price matching policy states:

"If you find a lower price (including shipping, handling and delivery) on an identical branded item currently available for sale and delivery in your area from an established online retailer, Sears will match that total price at the time of, or within 30 days after, your purchase."

Unfortunately, we cannot match pricing from the web site you found since it did not meet the criteria set forth above. In order for us to match another site's price on an item, the site must be an established online retailer, sell the identical branded item (with the same features, including a valid US warranty), and have the item currently available for sale and delivery in your area.

So anyway, it didn't matter because they had sold it to me already. But then this morning I kicked myself. I forgot, my roommate works for Columbia Records, which is owned by Sony. He gets something like 40% off anything Sony. I returned my 707 (unopened) to Sears, and ended up having my friend get me from the SonyStyle website:
DSC-F707 $999.95
High Grade Angle Wide Angle Lens $145.00
128 MB Memory Stick $89.95
Circular Polarizing Filter Kit $100.00

After his discount and plus NYC sales tax (8.25%) my grand total for all that came to $867.02

I'll have it by the end of the week. Needless to say, I am pretty happy with that!

Hi guys, I'm glad you all are getting your cameras cheap from Sears, etc., but where I live, sales tax is a killer - 6 or 7 percent. And if the store is adding in the cost of shipping, it would make sense for me to buy it straight from A&M or Brodway Photo (bwayphoto.com). Should I consider this, or do you think their operations are kind of shady?

Thanks

-Shawn

If you go to dealtime.com and do a search for what you want to buy, it does price comparisons to find you the cheapest online retailer. It also has customer reviews of the various sites. Both A&M and Broadway score 1.5 to 2 stars out of a possible 5 stars for customer satisfaction. Here are the reviews for A&M:

http://www.dealtime.com/dealtime2000/Reviews/read_merchant/1,6955,9335,00.html?from=sr

Apparently, most of the really low prices you'll find on the internet are for grey-market merchandise that doesnt always come with warranties or even with all the accessories that they're sposed to come with, which is why Sears, rightfully so, doesn't honor their prices (when the sales people bother to check, that is).
