I Disassembled my d40x to make it IR (lots of pics)

With IR camera, your black and white photography takes a leap forward. Practically anything you photograph is a work of art. It is a form of black and white photography that everyone that sees it goes....wow.

It wins contest. It frames well. It sells well.

How is the IR focusing of the modded caamera? Becaause IR light is focused differently than visible light. Legacy MF lenses had specific IR focusing marks on them to correct this difference.

As you can see in my self portrait, the deph of field is very shallow and it is still razor sharp, so the focus is right on. I believe that IR focus point compensation is more valid with the filter in front of the lens than right on top of the sensor.

Regardless, I try to utilize my lens close down (f5.6-f16) in order to increase deph of field to compensate.

The other thing is that I usually use the wide side, very rarely do I utilize any other thing that the kit lens.

I don't understand what you mean, after the photos of my first post (the operation) I shot some test photos, in these photos you can tell immediately the IR effect.

How?
The eyes in the self portrait (my eyes are dark brown) , the smooth skin.
The trees and shrub is white (all leaves are white)
The grass is white.

That can not be achieved by simply telling the camera to shoot in B/w.
The Shivas I mean... The pictures are blurry!
Kidding... Can you please post some pictures in IR from before and
then after the change? Is there such a big difference?

I guess one can go back and remove the IR glass and put back the
other one, therefore turning it back to normal.
sure, you just have to do it often enough. Then you get used to it like switching lenses :-)

Seriosly, very cool action! And congrats your cam works fine after!

Great work and the best examples of IR I've seen.
Your experience makes it look easy.

I chuckle when people mention using ESD straps in a house. Care yes, but nobody has a properly grounded floor and few would have a properly grounded strap connection anyway.

That looks scary and one way to void the warranty; anyway the results are great after the conversion but can't the results be replicated in software, e.g., Photoshop CS2 instead ?

very rarely have I been able to replicate.

I have used several specialized plug ins also, to no avail. Just some rare instances that I was able to get results that looked as good as shot with a true IR camera.

IR photography is an illness, it starts once you take your first photos with an IR filter in front of the camera then it progresses.

This may be a strange question .

My full frame Kodak SLRn does not have a Ant-alias filter ,which makes the Kodak the sharpest camera around. (proved on many a test).

Is it possible to take out the AA filter out of the D40X, without any problems.

(it would be interesting then to do a comparison - one camera with ,one without)

Nice job, Bob.
Just curious, what were you (de)soldering there on the camera...?
