What brand memory are most of you using with your CoolPix? Lexar seems to be one of the biggest names out there.. has anyone heard of Transcend? I am debating purchasing Transcend's "High Speed" 256 MB CF Memory... anyone have any luck with this? I have a quote for $159, no tax.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks,
Chris

I use Viking, Lexar and Kingston. Never heard of Transcend. $159 is way too much. I paid $89.00 for a 256mb from Amazon last week.

Chris,

I use Transcend memory and it can be had a lot cheaper than the price you quoted. Do a search in this forum on Transcend for information - no need to repeat it all here. In fact I replied to a different post about this just last night...

I use the new SanDisk Ultra and was able to get a 128Mb card for $79.99 @ Circuity City here in the US. I definitely can notice a slight increase in speed (writing to card) when compared to my standard Lexar card. I use a Nikon 5K.

But the price differs greatly with the speed of the memory, right? Or is there any noticable difference with normal vs. high speed memory, or is it all marketing? Again, this $159 is for "high speed" memory... should I be concerned at all about the speed?

Thanks again,
Chris

First of all go here and get a comparison of speed of the many CF cards out there. The Transcend card seems to be among the fastest. I am hearing good things about the Transcend 256 MB card and have ordered two for myself. I have no affiliation with Transcend or this dealer.

Transcend 256 MB CF Card $99. Transcend claims this is a 26 X card. No tax and no shipping if you order over $100 worth.

I'm a Viking fan, thru and thru.

Amazon sells em for $109 for the 256m version.

is the link - the price just went down and I bought two! Good luck!

Look up the camera you have or a very close equivalent from the same manufacturer in the reviews on this website - then go to the "timings" page - seems like boring stuff - but - they time the write process for different cards. It can be a HUGE difference. Also - in the reviews section, go to digital film, and there, Phil has measured different cards - (say 2 dozen cards) in a Nikon 995, and the times for his test - there you can see a clear difference where the speed drops off.
Thanks again,

That must have been during a sale. The local Circuit City to me is selling a 256 Sandisk Ultra for $199.

I bought a 128 MB/Lexar at Compusa for 59.99 minus 15 USD Mail-In Rebate. It is this weeks offer and the ad ties it to another purchase of a 32 MB card. But the Mail-in Rebate is in relation to the 128 MB, not to the 32 MB (marketing).

Thanks Everyone! After reading Phil's review of the different types of memory, I'm going for the Transcend 256MB card. Time to do some hunting and price matching.

Thanks again.

I bought the SanDisk Ultra 256MB for my CP5000 and it was HORRIBLE in read performance...Saw no improvement over the cf card that came with the camera. Returned it and bought the Viking....Much fast and much cheaper.

Spoke to the guy there, he was quite honest and said he only had one left but will have another shipment in tomorrow. Slight delay but good service.

Hi Chris,

The other card which is a good is the Ridata cards (they fair pretty well on Phil's CF comparison).
Last month I bought a 128Mb Ridata card and it works very well in my 990.

I used to use a 64Mb Sandisk card which I had bought about 18 months ago, the Sandisk took 12 seconds for the -Card Busy icon- to disappear... whereas the new Ridata took just 3 seconds.

I know a number of other members of this forum who bought Ridata cards and have been very impressed by them.

I bought mine from Vasa at http://www.powerinnumbers.com.au/ridata , some other people here bought their cards from Vasa and others bought theirs from Matt at http://www.MyDigitalDiscount.com

Both places have a very good reputation for very good customer service.

My Digital Discount also supply the Transcend cards (I think Matt supplied this card to Phil for his tests).

I would recommend you check both these places before you make your purchase.

I hope this is useful.

I have a Transcend 512MB that I got about a month ago and it works flawlessly. I paid $185 at aaronix.com They were shown own http://www.pricewatch.com and had a special just for pricewatch. Order online, no hasle, shipped in a day had it my hand in 2 more from California to Texas.

I also use a Lexar 192 12X tat compusa had on special a couple of weeks ago for $79 and a Kingston 256 (that Phil had tested well I got from Buy.com for $110 after rebate. I think the $159 price for a 256 MB is too high though.
