hi,

i will be getting a tripod and a wireless remote control. has anyone had or got a canon rc-1 or rc-5 and would like to comment. do you have to be infront of the camera and point it to the sensor on the hand grip. also will it still work the same as the shutter button and focus first like pressing the shutter button half way.

thanks mark

Yes.

No, neither wireless remote has a "half-press". The RS-60E3 does.

So would you recommend the wired cable instead of the wireless remotes since the wireless requires you to be in front of camera?

Have rc-1... works like charm

Difference between rc1 and rc5 is that rc1 allows for shutter trigger and 2 sec delay while rc5 only has 2 sec delay option

Theoretically yes. But the only time I am in front of camera doing that is when I am myself in the picture. Any other time, I stand behind and reach out my hand to the side to trigger the remote. Works very well from the side and just slightly ahead of grip

If you are in immediate trigger mode, there would be a focussing delay (unless you are in manual focus mode). On triggering the remote, first a half press is simulated and once focus and metering is achieved the shutter fires. Its done as a single unit of work

I own bith a wired and a wireless, as they are both useful in different situations. You don't have to be in front of the camera to use the wireless, but your hand (with the remote) has to either have something to reflect off or be in front of the camera. Nice things about the wireless are ease of use (clips to the camera strap), easier use from a distance (no need to buy and connect a long cord) and IMO easier bulb shooting (press once to open shutter, put in pocket till done, then press again to close shutter). The wired is nice because it acts exactly like the on-camera shutter release - you get half-press functionality, can shoot continuous, don't need to reach around camera.
