Just posted! Fuji FinePix F31fd Review (N/T)

I still dont get it why TZ3 users are so concern and sour about not
getting highly recommended rating.

TZ3 is fine camera , with not much stuff truely superior than
others except having 10x zoom , but with a bigger than avg size ,
that almost canceled out and only means something to whoever
actually uses more than 3x zoom. There are quite a lot of cameras
that has 4x 5x 7x zoom these days with the size close to fx30.

I embrace all the technologies that is being packaged into TZ3 ,
OIS 10x zoom , True 16:9 , wide angle. I wish TZ3 has a fuji sensor
, but photos are being seen by ppl , those ppl dunno whtever OIS ,
Zoom u have on ur camera , picture clarity comes in and win most
ppl's eyes.
Besides Ricoh's R6 (7.1x zoom, 28mm), there is nothing that's even close to the TZ3 in the COMPACT (retractable lens) category. The Richoh only offers 4:3 aspect ratio, though it is smaller in size, but bottom line: Richoh's are not readily available in US.

As far as final review ratings... the problem some people have is that at ISO100 (in outdoor lighting conditions), the TZ3 will produce images that for MOST people working with normal sized output, are as good, if not better, than the Fugi, and the TZ3 "blows away" (to use Simon's terminology from his Fugi review) the Fugi in features and functionality. In the area of outdoor photography, all things considered, the TZ3 is more "Highly Recommendable" than the Fugi. In low light scenarios, at higher ISO's, the Fugi "blows away" the TZ3 and all others, and in this area is "Highly Recommendable".

Simon put it this way: "As with the F30 this is a camera that wins a Highly Recommended only if you regularly shoot in low light - if you only ever take pictures in blazing sunshine there are competitors with far more impressive feature lists or lower prices."

Here is the problem... the OVERALL rating of the Fugi is "Highly Recommended" (with a clarifier in the fine print of it's limited "highly recommended" rating) whereas the OVERALL rating of the TZ3 is "Recommended" (with no clarifier in the fine print in regard to cases where IT IS "highly recommendable"). As an outdoor/travel camera, the TZ3 is MORE "highly recommendable" than the Fugi-- but you don't pick this up in the TZ3 review. Simon states that the Fugi "blows away" the competition in it's sensor, but does not bother to state in the TZ3 review that the TZ3 "blows away" the competition in regard to features (10x zoom, 28mm wide angle, OIS, Leica lens,...etc.). The Fugi sensor shines in low light situations, but looses it's advantage outdoors.... the TZ3 features (10x, 28mm, OIS, Leica) shine in ALL situations.

If Simon had simply mentioned, in the fine details of his conclusion, that the TZ3 is "highly recommendable" as an outdoor/travel camera (but left the overall rating as "recommended"), that would have been sufficient. As it stands now, there are inconsistencies that are puzzling.

Fuji changed their name to 'Fugi'!

When did that happen?

(just kidding)

Remember . . . always keep the box and everything that came in it!

This can be true , is really hard to know if the updated version actually keeps all the goodies from the old one (SD800IS softy , less zoom lense)

Wow, that is a great deal!

My question is, does anyone know where you can get the F20 for a similar price in Canada (Toronto preferable ;)?

Hi Danny,

very nice pics. The Su27 pics are neat though that could be because they are...jet fighters which are always sleek looking ( insert Top Gun music here ). I'm mostly interested in landscape pics and the F30 isn't bad at all (as is the FZ7) :D It is amazing how well the F30 does in the low light shots of course. Will definitely be keeping an eye out for the Fx's. Now all I have to do is get at least one of these camera's as I'm currently without any camera's (long story) lol.

Great Idea, but too bad, can't embed music to my pictures, Photobucket does not support this feature.

Do not spend too much time in these type of arguments, simply enjoy photography with what ever camera you own, FZ5, F30, TZ3 or what ever.

Taken by my son when he was 12 (last year) with a 3M FX1 his second digital camera, the first one was a 1M toy, now he is using my FZ5.

Also taken by my son with the FZ5

Wish you have your camera soon:-)

The beach/cliff pic is fabulous! Too bad there is absolutely nothing like that around where I am...course there is also no oceans around me either so that doesn't help ;) Anyhow, again, great pics :D

The poster never said the camera had bad IQ and nor did I. The user interface of Fuji's is just bad. Things like deleting a picture, going from review back to taking a picture need to half press the shutter, photometry (oh that says so much to a user). Sometimes the experience of using a camera is just as important. If you don't like the way it works you are less inclined to take pictures. Why don't you reread Simon's review? Why are you trying to stir up the pot on this forum?

I agree whole heartedly and will try to rectify this in the next shoot. I'll set the same ISO on each camera, and let the camera pick the exposure based on the respective evaluative meters. Each will be set to -1/3 to reduce blown highlights.

Those 2 pictures are taken by my trusted FZ1 in Australia.

The FZ1 took, I mean takes GREAT pictures, robustly built. I had taken it to China, US and Australia, still functioning well, showing its age after the last trip to Australia.

The gull pics is my first BIF, I was HAPPY. I remember after printed that picture, I remember I talk to myself saying "so close, so close to be the perfect digital camera".

I recommended the Panasonic to a friend, he said he was told by others that Pannys are noisy, after seeing my Panny pictures, he brought a FX-8 and a FZ5 (later he trade in the FX-8 and got a black FX01, same color as his FX-8, he said his wife would notice, asked me not to tell). I also recommended the FZ and TZ series to the folks in the Fuji forum, I defended my Panny there my FZ and FXs sample, in a civic manner.

Panasonic make great cameras, so is Fuji, many talented and capable DSLR only also brought F3X as carry around cameras, at iso200 or below, some of them said the results are similar to some of their DSLR, that could be the reason why it was tested again a Nikon DSLR with prime lens. Where as the Panasonic cameras are fun to use and versatile.

Why the other brand camera must be bad? Each has own strength and weakness. When I took my F30 and FZ5/FZ1 out to talk pictures, when I was using my F30, I some times talk to myself, saying "I wish it has FZ's OIS, fast lens or zoom range". And when I was using my FZ5/FZ1, I some times talk to myself saying "I wish it has my F30 iso400/800 performance".

Photography is fun not arguments. Enjoy what we have.

If you ask me which 2 cameras I like bests, I will say F30 and FZ1. A little more on the FZ1, perhaps. emotional attachment, I guess:-)
