Paid $809.99 all in for body only on 3/28 -- from Amazon.

Now the same deal is $873.99.

Is there a Supply & Demand factor working here? I.e., is there more demand for the camera than there are cameras?

Or is it just Amazon charging what they think the market will bear -- minute by minute?

Incidentally, the added cost for the kit lens drops to just $47.45 with the new prices. When I bought the body only, 2 whole weeks ago, the added kit lens cost was, I think, about $100, give or take.

Cheers,
Bill

P.S. FWIW, my K10D is Version 1.00, which surprised me a bit, since Amazon kept running out and restocking, several times that I remember. At least that's what their site said.

I have a few things in my buy later section of Amazon UK - the prices go up and down all the time - it is probably to do with how much discount a supplier is giving them at any particular time which is likely dependant upon how much they have spent with that supplier in the last month

Although for obvious reasons they don't make a big deal of it, Amazon has a 30-day price guarantee. So if you buy at the higher price now and it comes down in a minute, you don't have to kick yourself. There's a couple of sites like http://www.amazingrefund.com/ (note: not an endorsement -- I haven't used 'em) that even offer to track the post-purchase price for you automatically.

Even weirder, right now Amazon says the k10d body only is $873.99... marked down from $1528.29!

They do have diff sellers under Amazon. Typically Cometa sells 10&% below that of Adorama. Not unusal

Matthew, thanks for the tracking site. Looks like I have just 2 weeks left for the Amazon price to drop below $809.99. Sadly, I don't think the odds are very good. :-)

This is the "Ships from and sold by Amazon.com." price, though.

Like a fine wine, as the 10D's sit on their shelves and mature, they become more expensive. Mine would be worth about $1250. now if I had not opened it up. I just couldn't wait, and have no regrets.

I've had a small item sitting in my amazon "saved items" for when I get around to ordering it or using a rewards certificate on it. Every time the price changes on it I get an "alert" in amazon. This happens pretty much once a week. It started somewhere around $15, then it went up to $16, then back down to $13, and then this week jumped up to $19.

As far as I can tell they just have a random number generator hooked up to some of their prices.

Note that Amazon does have a price protection policy. If the price goes down within 30 days they'll give you the lower price, but you do have to email them to get them to do it. The way Amazon fools around with their pricing it pays to keep an eye on it. I once got $150 refunded to me on a band saw this way.

How many of these items are imported? When you get notice of a price change, see if you can check the exchange rate for that period, or a few days before. The euro recently has become worth more in relation to a buck so dollar prices have risen...I think that's the way it goes, because it costs more dollars to get a euro, etc. Same applies with yen, sen et al.

I saw a briefing from the CTO of Amazon at a recent National Academy of Sciences study. He noted that Amazon is primarily an internet services company, not a retail company.

My guess is that Amazon prices reflect what the companies that use their services offer. The prices jump around as those companies compete for your business.

I think Amazon adjust their pricing with current demand on a partially automated process. Plus they feed in supplier price into the equation. Obviously K10D demand is very high at the moment.
