In a couple of months I'm taking a trip to visit a freind and go see a Red Sox game in Boston. I've got a Tamron17-35 on my XT, is that going to be wide enough to get a sweeping view of most of the stadium? There are a few lenses on my wishlist....I plan on buying the 400 5.6 in the next few weeks and then in fall buying an UWA lens like the Canon 10-22 or the Sigma 10-20/ or 12-24. If my Tamron 17-35 isnt' wide enough I may buy the UW sooner and put off the 400 till fall.....hmmmm it's just that I really wanted the telephoto for birds this summer.

I really really want to take my DSLR to my next Yanks and or Mets game. Did security give you any problems? Think i have a chance of getting a 70-200 2.8 IS lens through security?
Thanks
Chris

Security gave me no problems, but I also didn't attempt to take in a big white lens. I brought my 17-35 and 70-300 DO, which are both fairly small (as compared to the big Ls).

...can be a pain -in-the-a$$ with a white lens, I shot with the BLACK 200L-2.8 from the second box behind the press box.

it won't be an issue at Yankee stadium. Heck, you can go in with a 300 2.8 IS. Just no tripods or monopods. the guards sometimes even start talking camera with you. they are really cool about it. now like the at say basketball.

haven't been to the 'other' place yet since I got my DSLR, haha.

I find this last shot hilarious. A booth decked out with Nikon ads everywhere, and nothing but Canon photogs with their white lenses all around, save one gloomy-looking guy.

Anyhow, I think 17 (=27) is definitely wide enough for the all-encompassing ballpark shot, but honestly, how many of those can you take? You take the first one, and once your wide angle captures everything, from your fixed vantage point you're not going to really get any kind of 'different' wide-angle ballpark shot.

I emailed their general email contact yesterday and got this response.

Dear Chris,
Thanks for your e-mail.
The following is a description of Yankee Stadium’s camera policy:

CAMERAS & VIDEO EQUIPMENT

Single-frame and flash photography are allowed. Video cameras and hand-held video equipment are prohibited. Neither lighting nor camera support pods are permitted to be used by Guests at the Stadium. Camera equipment may not obstruct the view or path of travel of others. Fans are not allowed to reproduce or re-broadcast any film of Yankee games for commercial purposes without the written permission of the New York Yankees and Major League Baseball. All forms of video and motion-picture cameras are strictly prohibited.

Digital cameras are allowed so long as you are only filming single frame shots, not video.

so it seems bringing a 30d is fine, however when i review the ballpark security guide i see this:
http://newyork.yankees.mlb.com/nyy/ballpark/security.jsp

"No backpacks, briefcases, attaché cases, coolers, glass or plastic bottles, cans, large purses, bags or video cameras will be permitted into the ballpark."

In order to bring my 70-200 2.8 IS i've got to bring my Lowepro Slingpack 200, did you bring your 300mm lens mounted or in a bag? the rule is ridiculous because i see women bringing massive purses ALL the time! I hate the worry of going to venues only to get into arguments with security over a bag w/ just a camera & lens in it.....

hi,
yeah, i actually brought in it mounted. everything out in the open.
didn't want to test out trying to get any kind of case through.

anyway the stadium is, as I said before, so refreshing compared to say just about any basketball stadium (at those I have even gotten grief WITH a PRESS PASS, haha). baseball seems to be the coolest of all the major team sports in terms of what you can bring in and Yankee stadium in particular among baseball stadiums.

17-xx should be good, but 17-35 is not a very good range. you will have wide shots and... wide shots. i made the mistake last october when i took my rebel XT and sigma 10-20 to game 5 of the world series (NO, not the WINNING game 5, because they technically clinched it on game 4 which was rained out, and thus played after game 5)

i won tickets to NLCS game 5 from work, in these seats way up the right field side, section 49x or something ridiculous. i took my 28-135IS. i decided that it wasn't long enough to come close to capturing any action, so i would take the 10-20 to the world series game. sure, i would be giving up all action on the field shots, but i didn't think those would come out anyway, and in return i could get some encompasing-stadium type shots (like you mentioned) of the crowds.

in the end i found myself taking a dramatically lesser amount of photos than if i had taken a 70-300 along with me. the 10-20 is really only good for one type of shot, and you can only get that shot once or twice from the same location. so once you take a photo of, say, fans cheering from your seat, there is no point to take it again

although...this one was kind of cool

unless that tamron is an f/2.8 or a very sharp lens or something, i'd almost recommend taking the kit lens instead - especially if it is a day game or you have some slavagable daylight during the game. the 35-55mm range you will add will come in handy, not just for game action (which is most certainly out of reach short of a 70-200 or 70-300), but for pictures in the stadium. encompasing is good, 18mm can acommodate that. telephoto is good, too.

although those pictures don't show the stadium as the stadium, they do show unique views that you see from within the stadium, and they were all taken with a telephoto lens. some games i went to taking nothing but my sigma 70-300APO beacuse i didn't have a woman with me to store my extra lenses in her purse! but i think a two lens setup is ideal. that or maybe a sigma 18-200 in daylight stopped down to f/11 might cut it...

p.s. i've taken loads of camera gear into busch stadium in st louis, including my XT and a rented 70-200 f/2.8L. i went to a road game in kaufman stadium in KC and took my entire backpack full of gear in. they check it for bottles, weapons, and any other contraband but did not care about the camera gear

Thanks for the input. I do plan on having more than one lens with me. I just wanted to make sure the 17 would be wide enough to get a couple of encompassing shots. Hopefully by that time I will be the owner of a niew 400 5.6 lens, if not then I'll just bring my crappy 75-300 lens. Just waiting on the funds right now.

I've shot many a wide angle shot at Fenway with the kit lens on a 20D. Your 17 will be fine. Your 75-300 will be good also, the 400 better.

Take a walk around for some different angles. If you are in town long enough, do the Fenway tour. For us poor folk, it's the only chance to ever sit in the Monster Seats.

And remember today is opening day at Fenway, 2 PM ET.

Go Sox.

went to a game last year and brought at the time my KM 5D with a 70-210/4 lens. had no problems getting in. there was actually a guy next to me with a lens twice the length of mine.

i called the park before hand and they told me there are no restrictions on cameras to bring in. they did say that it cant obstruct the people next to you? so i brought a small bag and had no issues. call first and ask about the 400 if you get it. i will be going later in the year and plan on bringing my 70-200/2.8.

enjoy fenway its awesome.

As DRabbit's post showed, 17mm is indeed wide enough to get most of the park into the shot, but not all of it. 10mm will be a lot better, but instead you could try getting enough matched shots to stitch together for a pano.

I recently went to the Mets vs. Colorado game on 4/23.

I got there after the second inning, shot around until the 4th until I walked over to another section to get a better shot. This ONE usher was giving me cr*p about the 70-200 f2.8 L lens.

Security check didn't give me any problems getting in, but the white lens drew the attention. Talked to the supervisor, and she said I had to put away. They ended up following me for about 3 solid innings seeing if I would lift my camera up.

Thing is, around the 7th innning, another guy with a Nikon D200 with at least a 400mm lens was standing in front of that same usher snapping away. I gave him a mountful to say the least.

But for future reference, Try and have a friend stand next to you, in a home white jersey, and hope for some unruly fans around you so that they take most of the attention away from you. You should be fine.

I was just at Fenway last Sunday. SOX / YANKEES. I was able to bring in and use all night a 300f/2.8L IS. The only SH#T I gt was from the drunk fans wanting to try the camera.

We should be able to bring in whatever cameras we can afford, period. I mean, I guess there should be some kind of limitation of tripods, etc., due to the congestion and traffic of the bleachers, but if you are holding onto a camera yourself, then I don't see a problem.

The drunks can be problematic at those games though ~ fer sure!!

I'm glad you got to get some good pics.

;)

i am not a fan of the sox/yankees rivalry (because i think carbs/cubs is a much better rivalry, and east coast teams get all the national attention), but i did watch that sunday night game where the sox hit four consecutive homers.

probably one of the craziest things i have witnessed. what's a real shame is that nobody is talking about how the dodgers did that same thing, except it was in the bottom of the ninth inning when they were down by 3 runs, and that feat is all but forgotton not even a year later!!!
