707, winner of DIMA Digital Camera Shoot-Out

Nice to know I spent $1000 on a p&s. I notice the Minolta D7 is classified and a prosumer. It doesn't make a bit of difference to me but this may p* s off some people.

No biggie. The D7 was placed there not because of its features, but because that's the price category in which it was originally released. It started out way too expensive to begin with. :)-- Ulysses

If that's the case I have a "professional" Kodak DC280 I'll be willing to let go for $6000. Any takers :)

I'm with you...I don't care what it's called. It doesn't change the camera I own.

I just want one that works. The first one I got had DLS, and I exchanged it for another last night with very little difference. It seems that this problem is a lot more prominent than I thought and I'm losing confidence in Sony.

Hi Max,

Well I don't realy write what I think, I just am to amazed ;-)

As I wrote what I'm thinking not just you but quite a lot of other people would be amazed too,

Well there you go. Program picture modes don't make a camera
a P&S but an electric zoom does.

That's cleared that up then :)
It started out way too expensive to begin with. :)
In the US -- in the UK the F707 and D7 have pretty much
been in lock step with Sony having a stronger hand over
discounting.

Nice to know the F-707 is best in class from $900 to $2500. It's been rated better than the D-7 in about every review I have read. I guess what it really means is it's the best camera on the market for under $2,500 right!

From what I have seen Minolta must not think to much of the D-7 ether. You can buy one for less than half of what they were selling for before the 707 came out.
I love my 707!!

Is it just me or is the news for the most part concerning digital cameras comming out of Orlando kind of lack luster and ho hum as far as the average digital camera buyer/owner is concerned. --43sbest

Well, it depends on how you look...

Oh, I've said this only about 172 times already. :-)

But on a direct comparison on this very site, the Sony has the sharper image! That's why I bought it. PT Kitty

Wrong, The 707 was the Point and Shoot $900 to $1200 winner

The DImage 7 was the Prosumer $1200 to $2500 winner
The DImage 5 was the $800 to $899 Point & Shoot winner

Both Minoltas were winners and the sony 707 won it's catagory

What I see here is a bit unfair way of dealing with the categories. Insted of the narrow price range, the categories should all go from $0 up to the roof price of the category, that way a low price camera with superior quality could win several categories, if that low price camera produces better pictures etc than the slightly more expensive ones.

That would mean the categories for portable still picture cameras would have been:
$0 to $100
$0 to $199
$0 to $299
$0 to $499
$0 to $699
$0 to $899
$0 to $1,200
$0 to $2,499
$0 to $9,999

Rick is correct like it or not you have to live with it unless you intend to swap some votes with the french judge, hehehe.

Why not have a class for cameras with memory stick and one for the rest of the world with CF. SOny would win for sure then.

My intent with changing into $0 to roof price categories, was that the best camera (no matter what brand) that could be bought within the limited amount of money would win the category. That way no camera would be punished for beeing exceptionally low priced.-- ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ http://hem.bredband.net/maxstr

Even thought i know it says "51" digital camera entries from 20 manufacturers participated. Theres gotta be a mistake and its gotta be wrong. The reason im thinking this way is back in late October some guy here compared the F707 with some other digicam and proved the F707 to be inferior...heehee
Guess that comparison matches the initials.

im mumbling...nevermind...

OK. By that inference P&S cameras apparently are perceived
as having a higher image sharpness than so-called 'prosumer'.

BTW I wasn't criticising the F707 -- rather the 'P&S' classification
which is IM(NV)HO ludicrous.

You came all the way from the Minolta forum just to post this comment? Sounds defensive to me.

After the last few weeks, we all know NOW how fickles judges can be... could have been any number of factors of why the Nikon didn't place. I just hope there is no withrawal from the conference before the closing ceremonies.
