5D for Baby pics?

your own baby ?

I rent a 5D now and then for paid work. I would never want to own a 5D.

I get great images with smaller camera's for the web and personal prints. For great family picts you need something you can carry around all the time. Not like ohhh....quickly get the 5D ...lol.

It seems to be much better for me.... for the following factors:

1. better ISO performance
2. better out-of-focus performance
3. better focusing

My baby move alot and most of the shots are indoor which make 5D a good camera for baby pics... but I am comparing to 10D (my previous camera which I still love alot). Don't have a 30D, so I may not be comparing apple to apple in term of your question.

Might want to think about getting a nice, fast, prime lens if you want to shoot without flash. If I had a baby or toddler around the house, I'd likely find I'd use a 35mm f/1.4, 50mm f/1.4 and 85mm f/1.8. Then again, a nice zoom with flash would work well too.

What would you hope to GAIN using a 5D?

agreed, I shoot my baby mostly with 28f1.8, 50 f1.8, 85 f1.8 and 100 f2.8 (macro). Personally I love 28f1.8 and 85 f1.8 the most... 50 f1.8 a bit slow, may get the f1.4 version in the future

Yes, my own baby :)

That was a good point about having something carryable around, although I couldn't use a P&S...I find them too slow and of course impossible to use indoors without flash.

I don't know how much smaller a 30D is, since the lenses one carries around add a lot of bulk...I suppose I could take the 30D and 50 1.8 with me when I'm out of the house. It'd be something for the hubby to carry around, LOL. Since he complains that I have enough photo equipment already!

I should've posted that I have the following lenses:

28 1.8, 50 1.8, Sigma 105mm Macro - hadn't thought of using that for this though (it's great for bugs), 28-135, and a few that aren't useful for baby photography like the 100-400L and 10-22.
If I stay with the 30D, should I add another lens to my collection?
I think if went with the 5D, I think I'd have to get the 85, no?

I'm wondering whether I should get a 5D for baby pics. I have a
30D already, and I'm wondering how much of a difference a 5D will
make?
Or is it better to invest in a good lens? Any recommendations?

I have a 400D and am also considering moving to 5D for baby pics--yes, just my own. For me the big bump up with the 5D would not be so much in resolution (the 400D is good enough for me there) but rather in the high ISO quality where the 5D is clearly superior. If you really are considering it, then wait a few weeks--we may be getting another rebate offer.

I have a 5D and 20D. If it's one or the other I'd choose a good lens and flash over the 5D. Then buy the 5D as soon as I could afford it.

Weight, put a 5D or 20D in a bag with three lenses and I couldn't tell you which body is in there. One of the reasons this is a popular travel camera.

Image Quality; hands down better than 20D, probably the same with the 30D. But the 30D still takes fantastic pics. High ISO is really a great feature on the 5D.

Depth of Field. For baby pics this can sometimes be a pain. Baby moves so quickly, the shallow DOF can really be your enemy at times, especially when in low light.

I have a family gallery with loads of 20D pics. Will be uploading some 5D shots of my niece this afternoon. I'll post the link when I'm done.

Seems to answer this question we would have to know where you are in your lens collection. Sorry if I missed that point. I love the 5D for the better high ISO. Often it is just light coming in from a window that I add fill flash to. I would really miss my 5D. Steve

The 5d will give you a bigger / brighter viewfinder to work with, which comes in handy particularly indoors. Although, I think investing in a good prime lens for portraits of your kid will be a better than upgrading to the 5d though.

For full frame I enjoy using a 35mm lens (24mm for a cropped camera). Canon prime lenses in this range focus pretty close up and are extremely sharp, i.e. 35L, 35 2.0 and 24 2.8. You could later add a 85mm lens or a 70-200 zoom to get more reach and different perspective for your shots.

Here is a sample 1Ds, 35L:

If you can afford it, the 5d is a wonderful camera for baby pics. I've got
four kids and take a lot of available light photos of them. My favorite lens
by far is the 85/1.8. I also have a 20d that I use for kids sports (soccer).
Your lens collection looks good to me. Perhaps upgrade to the 50/1.4
and maybe add the 85/1.8 and you'll be all set :-)
