Considering switch from 5D to K10D

Hello all, this is my first post on the Pentax
forum................................
hi, welcome to the forum, hopefully you will find it to helpful.

I I'm looking for inexpensive
DSLR to replace my Canon 5D and having K10D on my short list I
would like to ask few questions about it.
  • how is the anti-dust solution in this camera working in real use?
does isensor still requires cleaning after some time or there is no
more dust issue?
well, I've had my K10D since new year and not had to clean it yet, no blobs evident either.
  • I've read that the body is made from plastic. does it feel cheap
or fairly solid?
definitely solid, it feels comfortable and safe in the hand, easy to hold and excellent ergonomics. The ergonomics are a little subjective because it does depend on you, but I found it to be much better than the Nik0n D70(?) which I picked up in a shop for a while. I recommend you hold one to try it out, then you will know

I have been daft enough to try using it one handed occasionally. I did change program line (Av, Tv linked setting) and did an optical preview with one hand - I wouldn't plug that was a selling point :-)
  • how fast is the focus, how does it compare with Canon's USM?
can't comment, but I've had no problems with the K10D. I'm not sure why this comes up so much, I suspect it's more to do with the way people use a camera, expecting it to react to a thought rather than thinking ahead a little and using suitable decent depth of field, dunno just a guess
  • I've heard lot of superlatives about Pentax prime lenses, how the
zoom lenses perform, what's the build quality?
some resources :

http://www.stans-photography.com
http://www.photodo.com - gives MTFs of some lenses

I don't have many lenses, still working on that one, but have a search thru the forum, I think in some of richard days posts he's put up some example shots with different prime DA lenses.

read the reviews of course, but there is no substitute for trying one out in the shop and seeing if it suits you - an analogy if I may : my brother in-law is a bit of a car connoiseur at least in the specs dept, he convinced himself that the ford focus was the best on the market, went and bought one and the gearbox died on the way home after pricing it up ! Moral : specs are one thing, but does it drive well ??!!!

regarding reviews, I have seen a couple over that few months which I doubt had even picked the camera up - one didn't even mention the unique TAv and Sv modes ! So I would suggest you be your own reviewer.
The second camera I'm thinking about is Nikon D80. What would be
your choice and why?
well I already bought the K10, so I must be biased right ??!!!

I have an MZ5N and liked it a lot, and I did have a couple of lenses already, so it was nice to know I could still use my 30yr old M50/1.7.
I looked at the nikons but didn't like the ergonomics at all.

I chose the K10 because of the amount of on-body controls there were, saves time and hassle not going thru sub menu after sub menu ! In body shake reduction was a big plus.
And if there is anyone whou used both 5D and K10D your opinion will
be appreciated.
sorry, no
Thank you all :-)

I sold my K10D för the 5D so I did quite the opposite thing. I have no regrets altough i for sure miss some of the features in the K10D like the in body stabilization, the weather proofing and the ergonomics. But for image quality, especially for someone like me who shoots alot in quite badly lit situations the 5D wins hands down. I had some trouble with banding in my K10D but also with the VERY warm colours that it produces in low light situations. Of course the in body IS of the K10D comes in handy when shooting low light but its no help when the object is moving. With the 5D, usable 3200 ISO and a 50/1.4 I can shoot during practicly any low light conditions. With the K10D I always had to do try and stay on 800 ISO or below for acceptable IQ.

"and for my needs and budget, Canon has the worst selection of lenses."

How can you possibly judge or question this?

...............after reading all the posts again and doing some more research. I'm gonna stick with the kit lens for now while waiting on DA* zoom lens.

I'm starting to like the Pentax forum, positive change when compared with wilderness of Canon forum :-)

Thank you all again and good night.

My shooting partner uses the 5D and I have several istD bodies and a K10D. They are not really in the same class. The 5D is a pro-level camera, while the K10D is more correctly described as a semi-pro.

Both are fine cameras. For my style of shooting, the Pentax was the best choice. It felt more "at home" in my hand then any other make, and I went on the get three istD bodies and now the K10D. I have never felt instantly "at home" with my partner's 5D (but that may be a matter of getting more used to it.)

The Pentax is not in the same class as the Digital Rebel either. To us Pentax owners, we find the Rebel feels more like a Fisher-Price toy than a camera in our hands. (Not to mention, not one single person on the Pentax forums have ever asked questions like, "How do I get the LCD preview enabled?" unlike the Canon forums with new Digital Rebel owners!)

As for missing the wonderful Canon 85mm lens - to this day, my shooting partner still drools over the results from my Pentax 77mm Limited on portraits. If you do any portraits at all and you can afford ONE prime lens for right now, start with this one.

"Canon has the worst selection of lenses" Huh!!!?
OK if you say so, now we can all get back to reality.

He's this wealthy guy that dumped his K10D to spend hundreds more on an outdated Canon 30D and hundreds & hundreds more on Canon stabilized lenses just to take snaps of his kid. He hated the AF (timewise before firmware 1.11 speeded it up by eliminating a couple of the double checks & obviously before SSM lenses), and "poor" lens availability and posts this on every.....possible.....thread where someone is considering a K10D or another brand to tell them this bad stuff.

He always sagely points out this buy the system cr*p as if he or anyone is going to buy all these lenses when all anyone really needs is a couple of good ones to choose from - which in reality is not a problem with Pentax.

He will point out the need for 600mm+ lenses (you can get 4 & 500mm lenses easily for the Pentax from Sigma, Bigma, etc.), because he found it imperative to take in-lens stabilized snaps from 1/4 mile away of his kid playing jacks along with the intense need of 5fps of the 30d because even 3fps is not enough for the level of understanding the concept of decisive moment.

He won't point out any of the 30d problems like internal dust, etc. and that the K10D is just a better, more advanced camera.

But what IS VPN? What do the letters stand for? It is not listed
in the Glossary link.
Yes, its an issue that a member on another forum close to Pentax engineers has discussed and apparently they are taking it seriously and working on it even if not officially. A quick bit of it can be seen in this correctly exposed, unpushed photo from a couple of days ago. It is apparent in the blue part of the out-of-focus hat at the bottom middle of the frame. Vertical streaky dark stripe patterns in the noise. Noise is not a problem, but it should be patternless. At least they're working on it:

I visited the Canon website over and over when I was shopping and penciled out kits and their collection did the worst at simultaneously meeting all my needs (combination of price, bulk, range, and stabilization.) I'm sure you did the same thing--you just have different needs.

That's good to hear. I'm sure it's official, just not public.
