Did You Still Use Your P&S Compact Ever?

I just aquired an XTi and don't think I'll be using my Canon A70 camera much anymore. My first inclination was to keep it for who knows when it might come in handy, but I also wonder if it will become another one of those things that I don't want to throw out/give away/sell, but will wind up never using again.

For those that moved up to a DSLR from a P&S or compact camera, do you find any use for the Compact now or has it become an unused relic?

Sure. Whenever I don't feel like lugging my gear around, I take my p&s instead. I usually have it on me even when I'm carrying my 400d just in case I want to get in a picture. I don't trust anyone else with my gear and I'm tired of explaining why live preview on my DSLR isn't "working".

I bought an S80 when I already had an SLR. Although I don't use it very often, I find it essential for those times when I want to carry a camera in my pocket, not in a bag or across my shoulder.

Yes, absolutely! My first digital Camera was a Canon S-50 and this still gets used regularly, even though I have an XT now.

I usually have a Camera close at hand most of the time whether at home or away travelling. The S-50 is a lot easier to carry than the XT and fits quite nicely into a waist pack for use around home. If I'm travelling I normally carry both Cameras during the day time (using the XT mostly) but if I go out at night I usually just take the S-50.

I also find the S-50 very useful for the same purpose as expressed in the previous Post. If I want to get into the picture, it's easier to hand this to bystanders rather than trying to explain the operation of the XT. In addition, it wouldn't be as much of a loss if the bystander decided to abscond with it.

For starters I was using SLRs before automation on ANYTHING existed. I find that I will only use a P&S that truly fits in the pocket. Larger cameras like my Sony H1 and the dozens of predecessors of it aren't used as much anymore. Reasons are change of business; performance and TV stills that required a silent camera are no longer necessary and age has slowed me down a bit. I need the speed and OVF of the DSLR to make up for it and help me a bit with anticipation. I had a lot of fun with digicams when they first came out and used some of them professionally but the high end ones have hit a wall for me in the EVF ,focussing and reaction times.

Yes keep it. I have the a75 many many years ago I had a camera and it died in the middle of a trip and they was no place to find a replacement. Its a great back up camera. Also they may be someplace wher you cannot carry the your big camera,. where the small camera can fit in you pocket. I have the Canon Rebel XT.

Couldn't agree more... in fact I just replaced my A80 with a Panasonic Lumix LX1 and carry that with me whenever and wherever I don't have my 400D.

Oh, yes don't lug the big on all the time, I keep my little Sony DSC -T1 in my front pants pocket, and it make women smile, too.

This picture was taken with the ever ready little camera. (zoom out)

I went from a Sony f717 to Rebel XT. I did not want to part with the 717, but it did not leave the bag for five months after I purchased the XT. I eventually sold it. I got a good price for it, and someone got to enjoy a great camera that was not being used.

My p&s camera died at the start of my vacation in Egypt. I've replaced it with the 350D when I got back. That's the 'no' part.

The yes part is I carry a mobile phone with a p&s camera. It's 2mp and shoots decent enough pics. No zoom, but it can do three shot pano's (and stitch them) and exposure compensation + or - 1 stop.

Here a shots directly from the phone cam:

I still use my S60 quite often, even when I've got the 350D with me. I'm gradually learning how to get the best results from the 350d, but I can still get guaranteed good results straight from the S60 that require minimal PP and can give great 8X10 or 8X12 inch prints. Here are a few examples - if you're needing a compact you can't go wrong with the "s" series even if they're not exactly new.

Absolutely. I used to have a 5D. Now I have a standard 8MP P&S and I think it's just grand. Use it all the time. Take it on trips with me to thailand and don't worry too much about losing it or having it stolen.

However, if you want really nice pictures than yeah, the 5D is better.

I have an Olympus 4040z, which is a very nice camera. Now that I

have my XT, I keep it as a backup. I have taken it camping where I didn't want to take my XT, but, you know, it is no longer "fun" to take pictures with it compared to my good camera. I recently bought a canon 35mm F2 so that I can take the XT with me when I want a smaller footprint; I am just that unhappy using the Oly. But I refuse to get rid of it, just in case I am on a big trip and the XT gives out. I couldn't bear to be without a camera

Yes. I'll keep my P&S camera. A Konica/Minolta Z3.
It's in the bag next to my 400D and on occasion it has saved a picture.

It 12 X optical and I made use of the telephoto on it when I haven't had the time to change lens on the 400D.
And since I haven't bought a descent macrolens for the 400D yet ...

Just when I'm drunk and dont want to break or cannot adequately operate my XT
