Thanks for the wishes and comment on my pictures.

I use D2X and 300/4 AF-S lens for my wildlife now. First 5 images were taken with D70 and Sigma 500/4.5 HSM and remaining 3 birds are using D2X and 300mm. In both cases I use excellent tripod. When I had 500mm and D70 I was using Gitzo G1548 and Kirk BH-1. Now for 300mm I'm using Gitzo G1325 and Markins M20. The new setup is much lighter.

I shoot from car or outside mainly. I've used blinds in my backyard, but never carried to field. The cardinal and rabbit shots are from my backyard blind. Everything else directly in the field.

BTW, your birds shots are great too. I don't think you have much more room for improvement :)
dear jemini
congrats on getting ur photos accepted!
My post slightly off topic...I want to ask you about the equipment
you use...as i found your photos very appealing. For the telephoto
work you use a zoom or a prime and are those bird shots with a hide
etc ??

Dear Jemini

Thanks for the prompt reply and the encouragement...had a look at your gallery...it is very inspiring. I have one more query if you dont mind. It seems you changed your setup from 500mm Sigma to 300mm f4...I am wondering why? Is it the less weight and easy handling...or something else.

I am asking as I am considering a 300mm f4...and someday a submission to Alamy......going your way i guess!

I would go for rf on the jewellery and licensed on the wildlife.

my mate sold this one 10 times over, he would have lost out if it was rf

on alamy image number A0P448

cheers

I would carry on, try to get 100 a year on think long term. I have about 1000 now in various guises sales are low but my key wording was rubbish. once it was sorted sold 5 in 3 days.

now onto retouching and the next batch of 100. only 9000ish to go

if you don't understand I'm sorry I'm dyslexic

nikon d80, d200, sb800 3, 50mm 1.4, 85mm 1.8, 12-24
sigma 105mm, 50mm, 70-200 f2.8, 18-50 f2.8
tamron 28-75mm

I wanted a professional camera with bigger buffer. I was looking D2H and then realized with same amount of extra money I could get D2X and 300mm f/4 which is a better lens compared to my sigma wide open. At f/5.6 and f/8 sigma 500mm f/4.5 HSM could rival any of Nikon lens, but it was not that great wide open. With my 300mm I shoot wide open most of the time. If you crop a picture from D2X and 300mm f/4 to 4MP that will be exactly same as a picture from D2H and 500mm f/4. I mean angle of view. D2X's higher ISO is worse than D2H, but I can shoot at ISO 100 on D2X most of the time.

Overall 300/4 AF-S+D2X was better setup for me compared to D2H and sigma 500mm f/4.5 HSM. If I could afford Nikon 500/4 that would be a different story.

New setup is lighter and I can hand hold at times. The crane shot in Alamy pictures is hand held with my 300/4 wide open and D2X still super sharp.

The draw back is that this lens is very slow in AF even with 1.4 TC.
Lens alone this is amazing.

you mentioned that 300mm AF-S is 'SLOW". One of the reasons i was considering it was that it is AFS and should be faster......what is your experience with taking photographs of birds in flight...does the 330mm lock focus easily or it is a hit or miss...those are the kind of shots i hope to get from this lens

Hey Brummie -

What did you fix about the keywording? Thanks for any comments.

fwiw, here is my 2 cents.

i have some travel and nature stuff on alamy and a couple other traditional agencies. for me, the nature market is dead water. ok, right, there is an occassional sale. but not for much money. by comparison, i have some sports and lifestyle stuff, far less numerous than nature, but it sells many times over the nature images.

i looked at your portfolio, decent work yet with lots of similar stuff out there already, both RF and also on the micropayment sites. your travel stuff, i predict, will outsell your nature stuff by a wide margin, probably 2:1. i'd put it up as RM on alamy. then put 80 pct of your nature stuff up as RF, keeping only the bestest nature shots for RM. Good luck.

There is no way the D2X has worse noise characteristics than a
D2H....they aren't even close as the X is much better.
Jim, you must be referring to the D2H. The only two DSLRs I currently own are the D2x and the D2Hs. I use both extensively for different purposes. The D2Hs has significantly better high ISO performance. So much so, there really is no comparison. The difference is that obvious.

Amazing photos of the fox, btw!! (different thread)

Thanks for the input. I'm hearing the same thing from different sources. I didn't know about it until I get the approval. I don't expect any sales. If I get some, that will be great.

I don't have many travel pics. I have some pictures before I've started taking wildlife.

Do you have any clue what will be the best place to sell wildlife images?

=======================

in my prior post, nature=wildlife.
so i'd suggest putting your top 10 wildlife images into alamy as rm,
others there as rf.
you should consider the microstocks alternatively as a 'training ground'
