Last week heard that BestPriceAudioVideo was receiving 1D's (from DavidP's thread)... called right away, talked with Michael Gavin and was able to lock in the 2nd of two that were to be received by them on Tuesday (today.)

Well, right on schedule, as promised, they recieved thier 1D's and they are being shipped out to me (and Pasha) today!

Finally, the wait is over!

Regards,
John

Are the 1Ds still considered a "limited availability" item?

If so, will the price come down? By how much?

I think BPAV is expecting to get 2 per week now.

Other stores are also getting them in limited supply.

But the backlog (there are still waiting lists numbering the the 50's or more at different places) should be worked out soon, I'd think.

I think Canon was diverting 1-Ds to the Olympics until a week or two ago.

Interesting. Realistically, how low could the street price go? The offical Canon USA press release listed the MSRP at $6,499 when it was first announced. It's already at $5,500 and it's still hard to come by.

I'm sure you see what I'm getting at. ;-) Would it ever hit $4,500?

I placed my order also at Ritz (nice people there), in January and was #62 on the list. As of earlier this morning (when I cancelled the Ritz 1D order) I was #49. They are coming in, but still slowly.

I'd call Michael at BestPriceAudio and Video (800-982-8273) and see if you can get one sooner through them. Prior to last week, I wasn't even on thier list and now, one week later, its being overnighted to me.

Yahoo!

Again, my thanks to DavidP.

I didn't tell you you owed me a finder's fee? I sure thought I did. ;)

But seriously, if you get the chance, take some ISO 800 pictures of something spotlit with a dark background. Something around f/2.8 and 1/200 for proper exposure of the spotlight object would be about right.

Then see if you notice banding in the VERY dark shadows (the un-lit area surrounding the spot-lit object). And does it show up in prints.

I know that'll be the FIRST thing on your mind. ;)
Again, my thanks to DavidP.

I want ISO 800 spotlit pictures. Tonight would be nice. ;)

But seriously, enjoy the camera. And if you can, take some pics that are similar to my concert pics, and let me know how bad (or not) the banding is in the very dark shadow areas.

If nothing else, Mike at BPAV might be VERY happy, 'cuz that could lead to another sale (to me).--The Unofficial Photographer of The Wilkinsons http://thewilkinsons.crosswinds.netPhotography -- just another word for compromise

Several of the big pro dealers have had a price just below $5000 since day one. Unfortunately, they all have a huge waiting list and so far they have been getting hardly any cameras and in lieu of an actual 1D about all they've been able to offer their customers is a tube of Canon brand butt lube. ;-)

Inexplicably, except for the Olympics, other places have been selling 1Ds.

Congratulations. Isn't it a blast when you know something has been shipped and is on its way and you're waiting like a little kid for the big, brown UPS truck to arrive?

Here I go, nostalgic again. It always remind me of when I was a kid and I would send away for some dumb thing advertised in the back of a comic book. I'd save up some huge sum like $1.59 and send off for the See-Through specs or the pepper gum or some other treasure. I'd painstakingly fill out the coupon in my best handwriting so there was no possibilty that they could send whatever it was to the wrong kid, then carefully stick an eight-cent stamp on the envelope with a picture of President Eisenhower on it (I'm really getting old).

Then the waiting would begin. I'd start checking the mailbox the DAY AFTER I SENT IN MY ORDER hoping that somehow my package would arrive miraculously. Then I would set out to be patient. That would last until about day four. Nothing in life was worth any attention until that gadget arrived. Keep in mind, the vendors that sell stuff to kids in comic books only have one shipping option available. A slow bamboo raft that departs from China twice a year and brings your package by way of a circuitous route that somehow manages to hit both the north and south poles and Madagascar before getting to your post office.

About a full two seasons after you send in your coupon, a battered cardboard box arrives in your mailbox. Inside is a crappy piece of plastic that never fails to dissapoint you, but somehow the whole experience was priceless. The fantasies that would run through my head about how fantastic the item was going to be as I anticipated its delivery were so fabulous that they made it all worthwhile.

Now there are some subtle differences. I no longer send in coupons. I call or fill out an internet order form with my Visa card. My toys cost WAY more than a couple of bucks and I'm usually not dissapointed in them when they arrive (and I'm sure you won't be when your camera gets there). That bamboo raft is still carrying junk to kids, now that I'm older I get my stuff a lot faster (although the wait can be just as agonizing even now). I also have the advantage of putting in my tracking number at the shippers website about 400 times a day to see exactly where my gadget is as it makes its way into my waiting hands.

I still fantasize about how great it's going to be when I get it and think about all the knock-you-on-your-rear fun I'm going to have with it. I just don't have to do it for two and a half months. I still start looking for my package the day after I order something (and I'm too cheap to pay for overnight shipping).

Back about 1969 I sent in a coupon to join the GI Joe club. It cost a quarter. You were supposed to get a dog-tag to wear and a number of copies of the GI Joe newsletter. I put a coin in the envelope and someone most have stolen it or it got lost in the mail because it never came. I'm still waiting for it. Man, when that gets here it is gonna be great!
Enjoy your new camera. And enjoy waiting for its arrival.

David,

You know that I appreciate the 1D headsup.

I have an outdoor and inside studio product shoot that I'm doing this weekend. I should have an ample opportunity to see if banding is a problem for me. (I don't epect it will be.)

Thanks again,
John
