I am planning to buy nikon sc-29 cord for my D200 but I have a problem about how to attach this device to a bracket. One end of sc-29 is of course attached to the top of the camera and at the the other end you attach the flash. Then do you hold the flash with your hand or is it possible to attach this end to something like a bracket? This looks like a stupid question but I still haven't received sc-29 so I don't know what it looks like at the bottom.
Is there anyone who can help me solve this problem?

Here is a quick picture of a D200 + SC29/SB800 attached

The cable can extend to approx 1.3-1.5m and the bottom end of the flash is a standard 1/4" tripod hole, can be mounted to any regular tripod or light stand with 1/4" screws.

You can either get a flash bracket or hold it with one hand and operate the camera with the other hand. It takes some time to get used to, but it does work well.

Hope this helps

You can use e.g. Stroboframe Bracket Quick Flip 350 with a Stroboframe Anti Twist Plate.

another option is you can throw the strobe + cable on a mono pod.

quick way to add more options to where you can put your light source.

(thanks strobist!)

isn't the D200 capable of controlling the SB-800 wirelessly? I do recall that i've read this somewhere in the manual, as I do not own the SB-800, therefore I ask.

dear friend I don't have it at the moment. A friend will send it to me from New York ( I live in Turkey).

Yes, the D200 can control an SB600/800 wirelessly, through pulses of light. But this is not a sure as using an extension cord, such as an SC-28 or SC-29. In wireless the flash/shutter cycle is slower because there are a series of flashes. Plus, wireless is TTL only, not TTL-BL, if you need that. And, in bright light, or in a very large room, the remote may not see the pulses from the camera.

Bottom line, using a cable is a more sure way to move a flash away from the camera as it behaves just as if it were mounted on the camera. Both the SC-28 and SC-29 have a 1/4" threaded hole on the bottom, as mentioned, so you can mount them on a stand or flash bracket. I have both and have used them both on stands and on brackets.

The SC-29 gives you an IR focusing sender at the camera position, which can be handy in some situations. This novelty shot was taken in near dark, the SC-29's IR focus assist worked perfectly. However, for most shots the IR focus assist on the flash head works fine as it is not normally far away from the camera.

Whats being said above is spot on.

The SC29 allows you to fire the SB800 off camera as it was sitting on top of your camera, no lag whatsoever... It allows you to tune in any mode the SB800 can turn into other than simple TTL on wireless mode.

Its advantages:
  • instant response in TTL as oppose to wireless blinks
  • IR focusing help when flash is off camera
  • Use of other flash modes (TTL-BL) which is very helpful
  • remote control other SB800/600 wirelessly without having another SB800 sitting aside, that is commander other flashes off camera, something that you can't do without the cord
Disadvantages:
  • hard to get used to
  • clumsy to hold flash and camera same time
  • can drop by accident

Disadvantages:
Add - SC 28 or SC17 if you have one from film days does the same job for less money.

Good photography has more to do with the pictures you take than the equipment you own.

And the Nikon bracket SK-7 enables you to attach both the camera and sb800.
