1D, or ST-E2?

Yes, I think so, but I don't really want to invest another $5000 on what is going to be replaced soon...

If you already have a 550ex, you do not need the ST-E2 for "only"
assisting focus. You can do the same with the 550ex by itself.
Fred,

Thanks for the tip, ...i read the info at your site.

Question: Is the performance "equal", or is there some difference, ...range, etc.?

1D at LEAST! Unless you can wait until the end of the year, I'd jump on a 1D.With those lenses there won't be anything you can't nail down sharp. Once you have played with a 1D there will be NO turning back. Those naysayers of the 1D are those that have either been consumed with the High ISO banding issue (partially addressed) and have either never touched or owned one. To touch one is to LOVE one believe me.....then you will realize what a PRO SLR Means!

CAT23,

just jumped into this thread - have not read all replies...but considering you have over $10k invested in "pro" glass - it is time to get a pro body.

Like you said - "don't have a problem with the EOS3".

I bought an EOS3 in anticipation of my 1D coming in - just to be familiar with its 45pt AF, buttons, etc... - instead of getting a D30. I have tried the D30 and it comes nowhere close to the EOS3's capabilities of reliable track. I also got to shoot with a 1D last weekend - as expected, it gave me back all the EOS3 lovin' and more!

I don't see the ST-2 working for anything other than your 85mm - and it is already your fastest glass. Otherwise, the range of the ST-2 is probably beyond your other lenses.

So, from the sounds of your glass - you shoot either alot of low light subject, sports, wildlife and/or like a very shallow DOF - where AF is critical. I'd say its time to put half the money you have in glass into a body. Can still use D30 as backup for those shots that you think the CMOS will provide a better quality image.

Good luck...

Isn't EVERYTHING that is "top of the line". But worth it in the "long run" for sure. At least one can certainly say it is built to last.....
I understand...

but don't you think 1D is slightly over-priced?

Not actually, I think it's WAY overpriced. After making the big mistake of trying one out however, I immediately sold my D30 & ordered a 1D.

I knew I would never be happy with the mediocre AF of the D30 again.

Yes, you're right...1D is really attractive to me...

however, I found the ST-E2 is really useful with my 85/1.2L and 50/1.4, and it's really fun and creative to control two 550Ex!

One thing that makes me stop from buying the 1D is the banding problem. It is so annoying to me since I'll have to shoot at higher ISO all the time, thus, I wish Canon will have a real solution, and I'll buy it instantly!
