I took Roman's advice........ Hummer - Bummer ;-)

Lil, are the headaches similar to migrians or migrains???
If so i have a suggestion that worked for me. No medicins involved.

Bill,

I've been diagnosed with headaches not migraines. Just constant pain 24 hours each day 7 days each week for the last 5 + years.

They get better & they get worse. You know what I mean I'm sure.

I'm always up for trying things.

Please tell me, probably best on my regular e-mail rather than here.

Feel free to e-mail me at knytt@ dslextreme.com

Thanks, suggestions appreciated

Very good shot especially at 1/250!

What settings would you have used?

Thanks,

Lil
I would probably shoot it at a wider aperture to increase the shutter speed as much as possible. I believe you shot it at 1/250 @ f11 if I remember and is a very good shot and even more so at 1/250 with a hummer. I would of probably chose 1/2000 @ f8 or wider based on your exposure settings. With the 70-200VR and TC17eII f5.6 is crystal.

1/2000 @ f8......... Normally I use 1/250 @ f8, but I wanted to increase DOF so I pushed up to f/11

I haven't tried shooting them at 1/2000 s. I've been advised to try using 1/250 s to freeze their wings. I went for that & I got what I wanted.

I'll run a test at 1/2000 & see how it works for me. I still need the DOF though & f/5.6 is not going to give me that.

Also, I only have two flashes at this time. The internal built in D200 flash & one SB800. I use the internal flash as the master & the SB800 as a slave. I do want to get another one.

I do not have a huge set up. I hung the feeder against part of the horse barn with a clamp I borrowed out of my husband's toy chest (= the garage) I placed the SB800 on my old rickety tripod & needless to say the internal was in the camera. That's it - that's my set up.

I do not have a lot of lights etc It was bad enough to keep my American Shetland pony stud colt from eating the hummingbird feeder. He found it a great toy. ;-) Should have photographed him playing with it making it swing.

So, no fancy set up. No fancy back drop, Just me, camera, flashes, feeder & the birds.

Oh yes, two of the dogs joined me - but they fell asleep..... ;-)

Humming bird alert, beware!!!!!! File under babies/dogs/babies/ugly girlfriends. Lol.
Jules
I may have had a burn out day about histograms - yet again....

So Roman recommended I'd take time off from them & do something
FUN. With my bad headache all day, that was asking a lot but I
figured I couldn't get any more depressed.

So I took Roman's advice.

Result

D200 with 70-200VR + TC17E-II at 340mm
matrix metering
ISO 100
1/250 s
f/11

C&C WELCOME!!!!!!

Nice bird, shame about the frame. I wish people would stopp adding unnecesary distractions to otherwise superb shots.

Ed_C,

I hope she does. If she does she'll pribably be happy that her husband could help me & make me feel better on a day I felt rather gloomy & down.

I would personally be happy if my husband could so something so nice & caring for another person. But he's computer illiterate & admits it. ;-)

Don't get headaches over this stuff, it's easy to get too
technical, and squeeze the creativity right out of it ...
Thanks Matt,

already had the headache - have them 24 hrs every day since the last five years. I am seeing doctors & no there are no tumors etc. That's been ruled out.

Just had nose surgery with hope that will help....

Thanks for support

Lil, you've come a long way. The image is great.

Thank you. You are Very Sweet. I've been very surprised to figure out that around the house I have one species of hummingbirds, but just a few feet away..... About 100 feet away from our house I have three maybe four different species.

I've learned a lot in the last few months. My husband the cameraman takes pictures to work all the time. Just the other day he was sharing them with his boss the 2nd generation Cinematographer. I was uncomfortable - I don't feel good enough. Not only that - I find out that the shots I've printed out for him are not coming back home. They've been given to other people to share with their wives. I've received requests for more prints.......... What's he doing?!?!?!

I've ordered two books on hummers from amazon.com last night & two books on "lighting & exposure" to help me along. Should have them in a few days.

Boy did I get a surprise about amazon.com......

That new service they have amazon.com Prime. The books cost more money through it. So I bought them in a two deal & it was less money & still free shipping - - just will take a few more days. BIG DEAL

I thought that the point of a forum WAS to add comments. Perhaps we should start a forum where no one writes anything, hey, there's an idea.

Neil,

didn't get around to answering this....
No, your image is tack sharp. Look at the eyes and beak. It
doesn't get much better than that. You captured the texture of the
beak and I think that is difficult to do.
Thank You. :-)
The reason I asked is that, having the same two lenses, I probably
would have shot it with the 300/4 if I wanted something in the
300mm range, unless I thought I would be so close that I might need
to zoom out. I never get that close to them but you may. You used
the 70-200 and I thought you might have shot it handheld (which
would have been impressive) because you needed to be mobile, and in
that case the VR would be a benefit. I don't know your set up
there except that you were shooting in or around a barn.

Neil
Actually, I'm stationary on these shots. No running around. For once. ;-)

I did debate the 300mm f/4, but..... The night before I'd been working for the first time with the 70-200VR down at the barn & realized that at times I may have as many as 4 or 5 hummers around the feeder at once. I needed zooming abilities, yet I wanted to be able to get close. I felt the 70-200VR was good for the zooming as well as getting closer with the TC. Without the TC I felt I wasn't close enough.

Now this was the second late afternoon/evening I worked with them so they may let me get closer. Now I'm about 10 feet away from them. With time I'll be able to get closer - hopefully & then I may just skip the TC.

I think I explained my "set up" down at the barn in another post. If not I'll be glad to.

Thanks Neil. You're a huge part of my "growth" & earning curve here. I am very greateful & so is my husband who's very supportive at this point. Though I think I at times show him a few too many shots of hummers. ;-)
