Just a few shots from this weekend. I love shooting the pitchers in action. All shot with the D2hs 70 - 200 2.8 with 1.4 tele. C & C always welcome.

Nice sequence very sharp and nice colors. Not sure if you could open up a bit more for a more shallow DOF and lose the fence. The TC may have limited you to F4.

Nice captures regardless!

Wonderful shots. Cute kid too. That's an interesting pitch. He's coming from way outside and looks to be throwing a right to left curve. It's good to be young and have green bones. My arm would fall off if I made that move.

I've got similar equipment (exception the camera body) and hope to be taking pictures of my boys doing the same in the near future.

Hey Guys,

Thanks for all your nice comments. Yes I would love to open up for shallower depth of field but I am limited to f4 with the tele. Thanks again for looking.

Were you inside the fence for these shots? Chain link fences in my town prevent me from getting these shots at Little League, however when I shoot at the Minor League parks, I can sit in the first row and focus the netting right out of the picture.

No I was actually shooting through the fence behind the plate to get these photos. It is pretty amazing, but if you get close enough to the fence and open up the apeture, the chain link fence does not show up in the picture. Try it sometime.

Unfortunately, the leagues around here in CT put up colored backing, like red or green, using plastic ties to hold them in place. They are made of mesh, so air/wind can get through it, but you can't see through if you are on the other side. This prevents people from 'loitering' there and causing a distraction for the pitcher. It also prevents any one with a camera from being able to take pictures.

Nice photos.. Why did you use A priority and not S priority? What would have been the outcome had you set the shutter at 1/3200 like I saw on some of your photos in SmugMug?

Heavy lens uh?

Hey Shane,

I have always shot in "A" priority, just because that is how I taught myself I guess. I like to control the depth of field and then it is just easier for me to adjust the ISO if I need more shutter speed. I really had plenty of shutter speed on these photos so I am not sure what you mean by your question. Thanks for looking.

Nice shots. However, that is the first time I've seen a picture with
sun glasses. Seems dangerous having occupied that position as a
youth and remembering some of the shots that come back at you.

If any of you actually saw any of the Spring Training games in which the Yankees new Japanese starting pitcher Kei Igawa was pitching, you might have noticed he too was wearing sun glasses. He's the first pitcher I have ever seen doing that - except for Gustavo Chacin of the Blue Jays - but he was actually using special night vision shades to improve his sight.

Very nice shots, Craig, and I'd appreciate some help. I've been asked to shoot a kids baseball game this Saturday, and I'm new to the D200, having only had it 3 weeks and shot mostly landscapes so far.

I'm confused somewhat about the focus options especially, and wonder what setting you used, and why. Hopefully our cameras have similar controls. Also, what metering option did you use, and why ??

I'd really like to do a good job for these kids, and would appreciate any advice you can give.

Thanks much

Lar.

Craig, very nice. Whose 70-200?

D-200

Hey Lar,

I shoot with a D2hs which is a little faster than the D200 but you should be able to do just fine. I am not sure what lens you will be using but that can make a difference as well. As far as the camera goes, I shoot aperature priority to get the depth of field I want but I also make sure I have at least 500 -1000 shutter speed to really freeze the action. I usually shoot with Matrix metering, continuous focus mode with the dynamic area selected. If you have anymore questions just let me know. Good luck and I am sure your pics will be great.

Thanks Craig. I'm getting butterflies over this, for Pete's sake. I do mostly landscapes, one of the guys in my crew asked me to do this, and I'm looking forward to it, but don't want to let him down. Turns out I was wrong, too - it's a soccer game for 8 - 10 year olds. Should be fun. I'll let you know how it goes.
