Does the G7 zoom operate in steps. My last camera was the A610 which had a stepped zoom which I found difficult to use when trying to frame a subject.

Yes it does - I counted 13 steps from WA to full 6x on my G7. Framing seems fine and you seem to have the flexibility you need capture the subject.

13 steps seems ok. My A610 had far less than that. Will put my order in now. Amazon have got a good deal. £299. Thanks for the reply. Paul. UK.

Yes 13 movements means 14 distinct zoom positions.

I've used the EXIF data at each zoom point and using a multiplier was able to determine the focal lengths of each step as follows. I also included the maximum f-stop available at each focal length:

G7 Zoom range 35-210
  1. --- lens---35mm----aperture
1---7.4--- 35mm 2.8
2--- 8.2---38mm 2.8
3---9.0--- 42mm 2.8
4---9.9 ---46mm 2.8
5---10.7---50mm 3.2
6---12.7---60mm 3.2
7---14.8---70mm 3.2
8---16.8---79mm 3.5
9---18.9---89mm 3.5
10---22---104mm 3.5
11---25---118mm 4.0
12---29.2---138mm 4.0
13---36.8---174mm 4.5
14---44.4---210mm 4.8
