Can someone please tell me how to diffuse in PsCS2 so that the blacks blend into the whites rather than the conventional method of
"diffuse glow" where the whites blend over the darker tones.

I'm looking to replicate the old darkroom method of diffusion below the enlarger lens.

Thanks

You could try :
  • duplicate background
  • on dupl. run highpass filter with high radius (15...); invert and set blending mode to darken
  • go back to background; add a 50% gray layer in softlight mode between the two layers
  • link the two upper layer together by alt clicking on the horizontal line separating them
should you choose lighten blending mode instead of darken, you'd get white into black diffusion. With softlight, a mixture of both. You can also have two linked layers one in darken, the other in lighten and vary opacity.
I hope this helps.
