TZ3 --> Something weird happening

Hi All,

I purchased my TZ3 over the weekend after much anticipation. Overall I am very happy with the camera, it's awesome to use and has so many things going for it.

However, I do notice something odd in a few photos I have taken. There are some weird clear circles in parts of some photos. I will attach 2 examples below (sorry I have left the photos massive so you can see what I mean - please scroll to the right):

It's probably more noticeable in the second photo, to the right of screen.

Can anyone tell me if this is something I am doing wrong, or if it's something more serious like a fault with the camera/lens? I hope not because I bought it for my trip to Canada which is less than a month away. All I did was take a normal photo using the normal photo shoot mode, nothing fancy.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Yep outdoor photos are fine and very good, but also so are some of my other 'indoor' ones.

I can try without the flash, but as it was night-time and indoor, I would have thought I'd need the flash.
Very annoying because other than that the camera is perfect.

Hi Natalie,

I maybe wrong,.... but I think they call this problem "dust pixies" or something like that...Its an issue with the flash iluminating the dust particles (oof)...thats all I know...hope some one else can verify this for me...

Maybe it's your floor? I only see the circles on your hard wood floor. Could be the flash is making some dirty spot really obvious.

Just a guess, but yea, take the same shots without flash, at a high ISO. With this camera, you don't need to be using flash indoors as long as you have atleast some decent lighting, crank the ISO up to 800.

Kiwi is probably closer than I am on this lol... I took a closer look, no way there are blotches of dirt that big on your floor (...probably)

Hahaha! Yes guys I just washed the floor that day as well!! I think the 'dust pixie' theory makes sense, I will experiment a bit with the ISO settings whilst indoors, I am somewhat of a novice and very used to a camera that I can just point and shoot. I think I really need to take the time to work out all the cool features of the camera and tweaking it for optimum performance.

A simple way to experiment with ISO speeds is to just suppress the flash, and then switch from Auto ISO to Intelligent ISO.

I noticed Auto ISO usually gets it about right, while Intelligent ISO likes to push it to the limits you (You can set I-ISO to a max of 400, 800, or 1250.)

Looks like dust particles reflecting from the flash. It's not uncommon on any P&S camera. Shoot the flash when snow is falling - outside - and you will get some interesting effects.

My guess... Dust on the inside of the lens.... My other guess would be they're not visable shootin longer tele at objects further away.... But I'm guessing.....

I think your floor is very reflective. Those shiny circles are reflections from the flash off of other small objects in the room, or other hardware under your table.

Ok I will give the lens a clean and try again tonight (I'm currently at work).

Thanks all for your great response, that was my first post so I am glad everyone took the time to assist. Cheers!

Hi Nat,

I have no idea what your mystery spots are but I do discern that you have two beautiful kitties! Bengal and American Shorthair? I bet they like to slide on your enviable and shiny wood floor. It is a favorite feline pastime at our house.

Good luck with diagnosing and fixing you spots.

Great pick up!! Yes Kiki is our Bengal and Winston is just a 'moggy' from the cat shelter. The cats do love the wooden floor and as you can imagine are great photograph subjects (but I have to be quick!!).

Thanks for noticing!

Those circles are commonly known as 'orbs', the photographic manifestation of the presence of ghosts. Look, your cats can tell they're there.
You should move immediately.

There are thousands of ghost and paranormal pictures. These photographers believe that orbs, hidden shapes, shades, represent the paranormal world.

Sometimes they use infrared.

There are several hundred ghost clubs. 4 prime time TV programs cover paranormal activity. Even CNN printed a long article with AP (Associated Press) pictures of Jing Henry VIII opening the doors of his castle and the security camera caught him.

Believe it? Hollywood makes billions from horror films. The ghost/horror genre is hundreds of times larger than the camera market.
