How many non-pros plan on buying a IDMK3

Already purchased my Mark III. Upgrading from an XTi, and three very old film 35mm SLR film cameras.

I was so underwhelmed by the XTi quality, that I figure the mid-range 30D or 40D won't satisfy me either. I rented a Mark II N recently and loved it. I got to shoot side by side witha 5D user and almost loved that, but my friend said it is a vacuum cleaner for all household dust.

So I figure the 1.3 crop is good enough for landscapes, macro, and the 10 fps is quite useful when shooting a 2-year old:-)

The only bad news is that the word in Japan as of yesterday is an indefinite delay in delivery date for Mark III. Was May 31, but now all bets are off. The shops are saying a defect was found during manufacturing and the original launch date is in jeopardy. At best, very few units will be available on the May 31 launch date.

...I am definitely considering it.

My target month for start considering buying it is November. My trigger price will be 3500 EUR.

But I still have to see what comes up to replace the 5D.

I am leaning towards the APS-H format because I find it an excellent compromise between sensor size and lenses optimization, but I really don't need the super-hyper fast FPS.

The "killer" factors, for me, are the live preview, in camera lens focus calibration and large viewfinder.

If I can get that from the 5D substitute, at a lower price it will be a though call to make...

It is a splendid camera, but it is little bit too expensive for me.
It is probably too big, heavy and bulky too (for a non-pro, of course).
Otherwise I really envy all potential owners of this best Canon ever.

Had 1DIII kept 8fps but added 12MP, I would have put my name on the list when it was announced. But for now, I am still happy with 1DII and wait for the reviews to see how much the image quality improves on the 1DII, specially for big prints (17x24"). I might wait for 1DsIII instead.
Just curious. Also, what camera are you coming from and what
features about the IDMK3 are the most important to you?

I was contemplating with the idea of buying a camera from the 1D family to replace the 20D in bad weather. But the recent Michael Reichmann story in Antarctica changed totally my attitude' and I don't accept the statistics excuse. If you pay so much for a sealed camera in money and weight, you expect it to function in light rain (and it was more than a single dead camera).
I'll probably buy the 5D replacement in due time. At least it's not so heavy.

I was hoping a half pound lighter might be better. I was just having camera lust. I really don't need the speed, but those 1 class cameras are excellent. I also liked the idea that the controls have been simplified with the mkIII.

My 1DII perfomed perfectly in downpoor of Amazon and MachuPichu. You can see those images in my website. Of course it wouldn\t work under water.

I have a 1D Mark II and I do wildlife photography. Its not business, its a passion. It is difficult to buy a 1D3 immediately, as I have to first budget for it.

The main reason which will make me buy a 1D III is the low light capability. It would be a major plus point when I am shooting early in the morning or late in the evenings. I have read Arthur Morris's newsletter and am waiting to see the samples from a production camera. If what he say's is true, then wildlife photography would be transformed.

I am not sure, how much of impact the change in AF points will have on my shooting. All the other features will be of help.

My 'Pro life' of shooting furnished interiors, and multi-family architecture is served very well by the 30D, and there is no compelling reason to upgrade. Then again, the 1D Mk III is so incredible that I can't stand to be without one. Granted, the shipping date seems to have slipped a bit, but it doesn't matter. When it ships, I will have one.

My bread and butter work will not be affected, but most every aspect of my hobby shooting will benefit from the advances delivered by the 1D Mk III. My early brush with the 5D did not please me. I bought one even though I was not excited about the specs (other than the large FF sensor) to begin with. Even by specs alone, the new 1D Mk III is a fantasy in real life. I can't wait....

I've just ordered a 5D. I would prefer the bit of extra resolution and full frame to the super high frame rate. I would like the weather sealing and AF performance of the 1 series though.

Effectively I've spent the difference in cost between a 5D and 1DIII on a Sigma SD14 to play with.

Like quite a few folk, what I really want is the digital equivalent of the EOS3, but it could be a while coming. i think the 5D will suit me quite well.

I am not a pro (not even close beause I don't make any $$$ from photography, just waste more and more....LOL) but I want a MK3 for:

Integrated grip.
new 45 point focusing system.
environmental seal
ISO 6400 (have to see how it turns out though)

Plus everything else (except for the bigger sensor) the 5D don't have.

Can't WAIT! Just spent $7K this past weekend getting a bunch of "L" lenses (16-35 2.8 LII the new one : ), 24-70 &70-200 2.8 L IS) as well as a Rebel XTi,grip and 10-22, 50 1.4,cards, etc

I'm on the list at #10 so hopefully i'll have mine early next month. It is going to be SWEEEEET!!!!

I hope its $3999 but it looks as though it'll be $4500. Bummer...

That and the new 580 flash units will wipe me out for a long time LOL!

I use the 5D mainly for landscape, but it is really not suitable for action photography which I am just moving into. Also, I'm not happy with the AF performance especially in low light, even for relatively static subjects such as a person speaking in a big hall. Too many lost shots.

The 1DIII's increase from 12 to 14 bit A-to-D is a really important advance as regards smooth tonality, admittedly not especially for action shots, but I want to play with that aspect.

The weather proofing would reduce my worries, although Michael Reichman's evidence goes the other way.

The 1.3 crop factor will make my existing lenses longer for, eg. wildlife.

I am 60 years old, have got money in the bank, and could drop dead tomorrow. On the other hand, may be I'll live to be 98 and need those savings.

The 10 megapix is a bit worrying. With the 5D I'm used to framing wide and cropping afterwards. In three years time 10 MP may be seen as not much cop.

The 1DIII is really nice. But I'm not quite sure yet. Unlike with the 5D, where I rushed in, this time I'm going to wait and let the dust settle (no pun intended). The other option is to get a more discrete camera like a Leica M8. My 5D on a Manfrotto tripod has twice stopped the traffic. Indeed it can stop traffic even when I fold my arms and stand aside from it! Clearly the 1DIII will be worse still on that score.

I'm looking to get the 1Ds Mark III depending on price and specs. If that is too pricey then I might go for a 1 D III and a 5D. I would like to end up with one FF camera nd on that is lighter than my 1D II. So, I'll wait until Fall and hope they announce the 1Ds III.

I'm intending to get one. have a 20D ands shoot mainly sports. Motorsports, basketball and ice hockey. Primary reason for the upgrade will be for the superior AF performance and the high ISO IQ.

However, my purchase is entirely dependant on how the ISO Safety shift works. Wish it had been a true ISO prirority mode where a Max. and Min. range for both aperture and shutter speed could be set leaving the camera to choose an ISO (again within a chosen range) to give a correct exposure. Imagine being able to chose an aperture of F4.0, a shutter speed of between 500 and 8000 with the camera selecting which ever ISO is required for correct exposure. Would be brilliant for shooting outdoor sports. (I guess I could get a Nikon but I don't want a Nikon!)

I probably will - maybe in july/august/sept once things settle in. $4000 is a lot of money to spend for a part-time photographer, that uses it mostly for a hobby. I make a couple of bucks, but nowhere near enough to justify the price of this camera.

Coming from a 20d - use it 99% of the time for shooting college sports. Can't wait to see what this camera can do when shooting indoors - both football and basketball.
