How many non-pros plan on buying a IDMK3

Jeez you're going from a Honda Civic to a Ferrari! I jumped from a 300D to a 1D and that was a big shock to my system. 300D straight to 1DMkIII will be a pretty incredible upgrade. Throw the MkIII in high speed mode and try to just take one pic - I guarantee you'll have 3 or 4 before your brain even registers the first actuation! The "1" series is just so freakin' fast, especially compared to the quite slow 300D.

It's gonna be fun! Enjoy!

  • tired of worrying about shooting sport in a drizzle. 1DMK2n might have done but having waited this long might as well get the better high ISO performance.

I'm coming over from Nikon and am currently a D200 user. I was interested in the 1Dmk IIN but I might see if I can squeeze my budget for the mkIII. Not currently being a Canon user, I also have to invest in new glass - its going to be an expensive venture but it'll be worth it. I'm jumping from Nikon due to lack of IS on their larger lenses.

Just curious. Also, what camera are you coming from and what
features about the IDMK3 are the most important to you?

According to another person that posts in this forum, he's appears to be the only Pro.. so

as a non pro, I will be buying this camera sometime around September/October, which by then should be after the inital rush of orders are filled and the nose bleeders are done bleeding.

I had the 20D and a old Rebel, both of which died due to distruction at seperate occurances...

... I also have a Elan and a 30D.

Now there's a fun alternative Juli! I want one of those HDTV's too. But it's going to have to wait until after the 1D MkIII. Definitely before Football season though!

Hi Jerry. The irony is that I mostly shoot landscapes or other items that sit still. But within that territory there is also wildlife (birds mainly) that I now just watch go by. I haven't found the tracking or AI Servo shooting to be particularly useful for such moments. So I have basically become ONLY a wide-angle to 100mm landscape shooter (on stabilizer mode "1") with the 5D cemented permanently to the tripod, whereas I felt I could pick up the D2N and a 100-400 and quickly click over to AI Servo and stabilizer mode 2 and track an F-15 or hawk or hummingbird (or whatever) that zoomed into my shooting range.

Bottom line is I'm just not comfortable with the 5D and I miss the versatility I had with the 1 series. Right, wrong, good bad or indifferent, that's where I am.

It's been a learning experience and I'm glad I did it. I needed to learn patience in selecting shots and setting up, and better shooting technique, all of which I HAD to with the 5D. It will only help my 1D shooting endeavors. I was, admittedly, a bit sloppy with the D2N, because I could usually get away with it and not have to pay the penalty imposed by higher resolution. You REALLY have to have good technique at higher resolution, or it comes through loud and clear on the IQ.

Never stop upgrading.

And the dust issues on the 5D sensor, which I NEVER had with the D2N, are also driving me to distraction. When I went to White Sands, I never once took the 24-105 off the 5D. Are you kidding me?? I ain't stupid. So the everpresent dust on the dust-sucking sensor of the 5D is also propelling me back to the 1 series. A couple of quick shots of the rocket blower on the D2N was all I ever needed, and that was only needed after a handful of lens changes. Not so with the 5D.

I AM sad to see that the 1D3 will no longer have the Firewire connection. The USB transfer rate of the 5D is interminable, but at least the 1D3 won't be transferring quite such huge files.

Joel,

Thanks for information. Your type of shooting sounds a bit like what I do. Mostly landscape, but the occasional wildlife and action shot. I just got a 100-400 mostly for landscape work (I like subject isolation), but also would not mind getting some of the wildlife shots I see posted. I have never thought about getting a 1DMKxx, because of the size and weight. Perhaps that will change. Or maybe Canon will save me having to get a bigger body by improving the 5D.

Well kinda.... Decided to try and get local vs. seeing what would happen at B&H. Put down a $200 deposit and will get a call for final pricing and availabilty. Local dealer states they expect about 25 of them and have had about 12 people put down money thus far.

Boy, all of a sudden I'm getting real excited for this upgrade! Just in time hopefully for summer soccer season.

but I decided to get two HDTVs instead.
Right on! Actually I am going the other way. I had been planning on getting an HDTV with my tax refund, but now that the ideal camera has been announced, I'm mulling the 1D mk III instead.

I've been stuck on my old EOS Elan II plus consumer digicam (currently S2 IS) for a while now, waiting for the right time to jump in to the digital SLR world. This new 1D looks pretty much perfect for what I'd been waiting for: a camera that can handle just about anything, has great autofocus, decent noise in high ISO's, 5+ fps, and an easy UI. Well, it seems that my waiting is over (sort of).

I plan on using it for a little bit of everything: wildlife, candids, portraits, macro, architecture, outdoor nighttime events, some landscapes, etc. While a 1.6x crop is better for wildlife, and a full-frame is better for fine-detail stuff like macro or portrait, 1.3x strikes me as a very good compromise.

As somebody else said, going from a 300D to a 1D3 is like going from a Ford to a Ferrari. Well for me, it's going to be like going from a Fiat to a Ferrari! I can't wait.

.....I'll probably print out a few better samples before I finally buy.

.....I make a bit from travel work but I'm no pro. I use a 5D at the moment and will keep that for backup extreme wide stuff etc. I would love the 1DsIII but it will be double the price (probably) and may have to wait a year for it. The 1DIII should prove to be a very enjoyable camera to use and a very flexible tool, I dont think the image quality will be better than the 5D but I think it will get me better pictures due to its speed and AF accuracy. I take mostly landscapes and sceninc stuff but for everything else, people, candid, any kind of action or vehicles, street stuff and sports it should be a bonus, battery power, dust system, info, VF, liveview, lens micro adjustments etc these are some of the reasons its worth going for now.

If I had a 1DmkIII for 1 year and sold it to get a 1DsIII I would probably lose £600 - £1000, which is probably a price worth paying to enjoy takiing shots on such a machine for 12 months. Then again I might enjoy it so much I would sell the 5D!

I already have an EOS 1D Mark II that serves my needs very well. I will probably buy another Mark II if they are still available but I know there will be a time when I will have no choice. I also heavily use my EOS 30D quite heavily in youth sporting events.

I tend to go by the following rule when it comes to my gear: Memories are priceless!

If I can afford it with no problems, why not?!

I will definitely be getting some memories that I would not otherwise with a 30D. If I get a wonderful shot from my kids, my parents etc; only one shot, that I would not get otherwise because of my 30D limitations (specially the missing weather sealing and poor AF), IT’s worth it!

I’m not a Pro as in business that’s for sure! So, hell yes!

A
burst of 30 RAW shots, up from 19, is also valuable.
You know Canon makes video cameras too if that is important to you. geeezzz.. a burst of 30 raw shots? Are you kidding me?

--I got layed off and my wife totaled our van (all in the last 3wks)... :(

Suddenly, the MKII is looking rather expensive...
