At the risk of appearing an eejit!!-

Turned on my h2 recently to find that no matter what focus function I use, the camera wont "beep" when I push halfway down (go green). What am I missing, or doI have a problem

Cheers

Neil

Beeping isnt a problem - sounds are OK. Im concerned that the AE/AF wont lock when the shutter release is halfway down

There is a known problem, particularly with the H2, that affects some number of cameras. It's a problem with the shutter switch wherein the half-press no longer works. You can press all the way down, the camera focuses and fires, but nothing appears to happen at half-press.

I think you may need to contact Sony for a warranty repair. They obviously know about this problem.

You might also try searching on "half press" and find some of the other threads about it here on STF.

Good luck.

...when the batteries are low. Even before the camera warns me batteries are low, I can tell, because focus lock becomes flaky. Put in fresh batteries and see if the problem goes away - it always does for me.

Manual focus (ive just found) isnt that bad but not being that experienced itll take time to compose pictures when i dont have the autofocus option. Judging by the search Ive just made this problem, while rare, does happen to both h2s and h5s so I guess Im just one of the unlucky few. Untill now I was taking quite good photos.

So send it back to sony or become quite adept at the manaual focus/histogram mode of shooting pictures. Decisions/decisions

You paid a camera that works in parameters. Your camera it is not working properly. So the only decision is to send it for repair. Hopefully you are in warranty period.

These problems are in all brands since they make most of their products in low quality because they expect that people will use their products for a limited period of time (usually one year). After that people buy another products, hopefully from the same manufacturer. The trick is to have a service life a little longer than this statistical period at the lowest costs. So they use China.

There were also design flaws (as the Sony P series). But usually it was just poor quality (workmanship and control).
