Need help saving an outdoor shot

I took this at possibly the worst time of day, on a very bright day at that. I can't seem to get this imported, without blowing everything out. I was hoping that someone here could take a shot, and see if this could be saved.

Any special processes you used to get this? During import, I couldn't retain the features without blowing everything else out.

Seems a little lighter than what I wanted, but would love to know what sort of process you used to retain the features?

I used Photoshop CS3 Beta's Raw Converter. It has sliders labeled Recovery & Fill Light. I put Recovery at 72 and Fill Light at 15. Reduced Red saturation under the Tab labeled H.

Not sure what you're going for but maybe you like this better:

I'd judge the faces are too dark.

All I did was accept the defaults in Adobe's RAW converter and then use Shadow/Highlight to open the shadows in their faces and darken the light areas slightly. After your comment I used levels to darken it overall.

RAW. Do "save link as" and then convert after downloading.

I tried converting with DPP and also PS, and it worked fine both ways.

Thanks! I actually really like that border you used. Aside from the edits on the image, I'd also love to hear how you achieved that border too.

Not sure what you mean by recovery. I just adjusted exposure in the raw converter and did everything else in CS2.
