I do agree though that it's often times the case that there are
100K+ picture embedded into the post and for those of us on a phone
connection, we don't find that cool. If you are going to embed a
picture, try to keep it less than 50K and have it linked to a
bigger version of it.

Five times on the blackboard should be enough ?

I agree that some of us have pushed the envelope and then kept
pushing. Phil warning/reminder is appropriate and he can rest
assured most will serously consider the entirety of their post
before posting but it is important to retain humor and express ones
personality - within reason of course.

Not no more taxes but..

...does those OT "chats" really make this place bad place to be? i dont think that OT's will replace normal threads at all. If someone need to ask tomething, i think he/she will ask it no matter is there OT or not.

It makes this place much better, that why i come here all days to check some nice pictures and so on.. not to read does the 128MB really work in some models or not..

I've spoken, UGH!

You raise a good point as to what is OT. We are a family here on the forums. As such the topics will go every where where our minds go. And just as in every family there are those that are troublesome; we have them too. And just as in a family when a member gets too abusive; they get asked to to leave. Hopefully these family members will be able to come back.

Can a person get on the ban list or warning list at the whim or complaint from another who was just as involved in an OT thread ?

How does one know whether he/she is on the list? Does Phil send them an E mail attesting to it? JD
I think everyone should be happy we have lots of users in this
forum. The number is constantly on the rise, and tempers sometimes
flare. But think how dreadfully (I love that word) dull this place
would be if few people used it, and every time you came in here you
had the same old messages staring you in the face. There's bad and
good in everything we do. This forum is good no matter what happens.

Good point.

Sigh,

It's time for me to wade in through the bickering and childish
behaviour and put my foot down once more. There has been a lot of
pointless and wasteful personal bickering and mindless, childish
comments made by a small (and unwelcome) streak of users in this
forum.

Following several complaints and my own observations several users
are now on our watch list to be banned if they continue in this
fashion.

Please return to the topic, talking about cameras and photography.

And while you're at it take some time to consider the rules under
which you post messages, if you break any one of those rules I
won't hesitate to ban you.

Sad because it's a telling off and none of us enjoy that. Angry because it really isn't necessary and to a degree, wrong.

You cannot have a forum/newsgroup that is just nice and polite. Life just isn't like that at all.

Now, I know I don't post much but I really do enjoy this forum, warts 'an all as they say. But I do guess that some of the complainers are the cause in the first place.

Critisism should be constructive and taken as so. Being nice with it sometimes makes the recipient miss the point.

As an amature photographer for thirty years I do feel annoyed and disheartened somewhat when I see a poor photo given the 'nice shot' comments. But even worse is when the critic obviously knows absolutely nothing about the subject. In my book that is probably the worst offence and in a newsgroup would get severely flamed and rightly so.

This thread alone has at least one person regularly guilty of that offence and has been flamed/corrected many times for it. Regretably, learned nothing.

Funny how the same person seems to be part of the reason that we ALL get bollicked for nothing.
This is a great forum, there is, in my HO nothing wrong here.

Hi Terry and JD.

I don't know quite how it works but according to the SLR forum theres a autobot that searches for offensive sentences, like "get th f out". According to rumours at the big boy forum both the offender and the one being replied to gets the boot. Check out the discussions about Dr. Gonzo and a few followup threads about banning. Some people including Dr. G got banned recently.

Sorry, I just don't think that I should have to go 3 to 5 pages deep into this forum to find actual post's regarding "Olympus" camera issues because most folk's seem to feel the need to "SHARE" their "CUTE" little images with those who are actually trying to "LEARN" photography and how to get the best out of their camera's.

Open Note to Phil Askey:

You have a "GREAT" website here, but this particular forum (Olympus Forum "Talk") is not what it once was. It doesn't seem to be an open "Talk" forum about Olympus camera's and postings don't seem to follow the dpreview "posting rules", but if I'm stepping on any toes here please forgive me.

Keep up the "GREAT" work here, and maybe us "Olympus" owner's can get our help and information through you and your "reviews" of various Olympus camera's and maybe some other website's where "camera" issue's are more important.

Thank-you Phil

DVG_85,

How does one talk about Olympus cameras and learn photography without sharing examples? I have a masters degree in Adult/Continuing Ed. and I have taught many adult level classes. I can tell you right now that adults learn more from "doing" and "sharing" than any other means.

Recently, this forum went into an uproar, because a few people were upset that many excited Olympus owners were sharing their thrill of owning an Olympus 2100 UZ.

I stopped mentioning that I own an Olympus 2100 UZ and started concentrating on techniques of photography that would apply to any camera.

Now you want me to go back to specifying my camera? I am confused!!

Could we perhaps all agree on a prefix that would allow those who want to search and pull out the types of messages they need? Like:

TECH: (for technique)
SHARE: (for sharing examples made with Olympus cameras)
ISSUE: (problems with Olympus cameras)
FAQ: (questions in general about Olympus cameras)
OLY2100: (messages specific to Olympus 2100 UZ cameras only)
OLY4040
OLY700:
TIP: (General tips on improving the use of Olympus Cameras)
FUN: (examples of how Olympus cameras have brought fun into one's life.)

I am ready to learn from you if you will give me some "examples" to follow.

RichO,

I couldn't agree with you more. How can I become a good photographer unless I SEE what good is? Photography is a visual means of communication, is it not? I must admit I learned more looking at the fine photos that are posted than I do from tech posts (I'm not diminishing their value at all, of course). For example.......IR photography. You can which talk all you want about which filter is best for infrared, what the filter does to light, etc. But unless I had see the finished product, chances are, my Hoya R72 would still be sitting on the shelf at the camera shop. Pressing the shutter of a camera does not end the process.........

And what have I learned from the Sample and Galleries Forum? The Canon D30, which I will never be able to afford, takes good pictures. There you have it.

In my opinion, this is what makes digital so incredible. Instead of going out there and having a plan......"I'm gonna shoot this with a half-zoom, this at 1/300, this one at ISO 200", you can just go out and DO IT. We'll all be here to discuss the results later.

While the rules do state that these posts you speak of go in to the Galleries Forum; I think that they add to the flavor of the community that exsists here in the Olympus SLR Forum. That is very different from most of the other forums here. I perosnally do not look at all of the gallery postings; but do when I would like a deversion from the tech chatter. Also as vocal as members are here, if it were a problem there would have been mega threads on the topic.

That's weird, the message posted without me hitting the post button.

Anyway. I am in agreement with you in part that some pictures don't belong here. And I may be somewhat guilty of it as well.

I say there is a place for pictures that give a good example of the uninque capabilities of a camera. For instance comparison pictures between one model and another.

Pictures that may indicate a problem with the camera are quite pertinant.

Samples from a new model are pertinant.

Pictures that may need input from users of the same camera.

Pictures that don't really belong are the "my cute dog", "please critique my art", "my baby", etc.

But if Phil didn't want pictures posted, he would modify the sight to prevent it.

The way I look at it, this is Phil's baby. If he doesn't like the way it's being treated, he'll say so. If you don't like the way things are here, you have options other than trying to "police" the forum. You can ignore the threads you have no interest in or you can complain to Phil... directly. This forum is pretty good from what I've seen and I have no complaints. I have a dial-up connection and a slow one at that and having pictures imbedded in the message doesn't bother me. I like looking at them and learning from them or laughing at them.

This is the Olympus Talk forum...where we discuss Olympus cameras and learn by sharing photos from our Olympus cameras as well as a dicussing technical issues...

If all the different camera forums posted their photos only on the samples and galleries forum it would be a mess over there...all the different forums post photos...nothing new here...

We post here can so we learn about Olympus cameras through shooting and sharing as well as discussing tech stuff...

What issues are you looking to find? Why not just do a search? Most of the "issues" have been discussed over and over again and can easily be found through a search...

This forum would be so boring if people only discussed "issues"...
because most folk's seem to feel the need to "SHARE"
their "CUTE" little images with those who are actually trying to
"LEARN" photography and how to get the best out of their camera's.
How better to learn photo than to post images and discuss ways to impove? You learn also by shooting and sharing, not just talking about fstops and DOF and menus ets...

If all we want is tech talk, we could just read a manual...
