and plans to stock SD14? Anybody knows? I've tried to google around but "Sigma Canada" returns absolutely meaningless links. According to Sigma USA http://www.gentec-intl.com is the distributor in Canada, however their site is not showing and Sigma DSLRs at all??

All the above would be harmless if Sigma honors international warranty on their bodies, so I can buy from let say B&H or other shops in US. Can someone pls confirm that?

I have never held SD body in my hands so it's important for me to hold one for ergonomic purposes. IQ seems to be just fantastic in my opinion. Judging by the various posts in recent days.

Thanks and regards

Marek

Have you checked with Henry's in Toronto? They don't list it on their website, but may be able to locate one for you. You can also check with Canoga Camera regarding shipping, etc. to Canada. Both B&H and Canoga are good places.

As far as the camera body, the SD14 sounds like it's a bit smaller than the SD10, and people that have the SD14 have said it is comfortable and well-balanced.

You may have to get a dealer to do a special order for you. Make sure you have a firm grip on something solid before asking the price as Gentec isn't giving dealers any great prices. I've priced numerous Sigma lenses at my local photo shop and they always suggest that I buy it from the U.S. as they can't come anywhere close and still make a profit.

Last time I was in a Henry's in London, Ontario while visiting my folks I asked about Sigma lenses for my old SD10 and was told that they don't carry them but could order them. I'm guessing that Henry's won't carry the SD14 in stock but I hope I'm wrong.

I am not sure that I would buy a camera of SD14 cost based only on how it felt to someone else shooting. If it was 300 bucks P&S than sure, but not 1600 + the fact that the whole system would be new to me. I just need to see and hold the camera before I order it anywhere.

I've heard people complaining about the fact that they cannot try SD14 before they commit and I totally agree with them. This is not like an SD9 user trying to decide whether to risk and upgrade without holding it first. I could certainly do that and not think much about it.

Thanks for the suggestions anyways.

Marek

p.s. I have a feeling that my only option will be a photo show and hope that Sigma's distr. will have it there. I've heard that they are very slow getting new product in, so I might not get lucky. Without knowing much about Sigma, I can say that they definitely improve their visibility and distribution in developed countries like Canada. We are not talking here of an island in the middle of nowhere with 1500 population.

For what it's worth, maybe email Sigma US and Sigma Japan and let them know about the lack of presence in Canada...sounds like another lost business opportunity for Sigma.

This is where the user group and this forum can step in - if anyone would like to try using the camera, put up a request on this forum and perhaps someone living nearby can come over and spend a half day with you helping you shoot with the camera. It will be a little while before there are SD-14's in more places, but currently we have people out on the east coast, west coast, and center of the country that have cameras.

Not sure about Canadian Sigma users though.

I bought my SD9 from JUST CAMERAS four years ago. They are at Dixie Rd & Dundas in Mississauga. They ordered the camera for me and had it in a couple of days. The price at the time was very competitive (I couldn't have done better buying in the US) but I don't know what they are asking for the SD14. Their service was excellent (with communications with Sigma Japan and anything else I needed) and they even got me a loaner SD10 when my SD9 died six months ago. I would excourage you buy their extended warranty, it came in handy for me. The camera works better than ever now.

Juan

Anyone want to bring their SD14 up to Fort McMurray, Alberta?:-)

Thanks for the tip, I will definitely keep them in mind and stop by. It's fairly close to me as I live in Brampton.

Are you planning to get SD14 as well?

Sorry to hear about your SD9. BTW how did they fix it.? Did they send it to Sigma US or Sigma Japan for repair?

Thanks

Marek

Great idea Kendall.

I will keep my eyes open on the forum. I shoot Olympus presently, but I currently read this forum daily as well. I feel that I've learned quite a bit about Foveon technology. A lot of good info here. The images from last few days posted here by various people (incl. yourself) taken with SD14 just blew me away.

Marek

So how about, when I get one I will stop by and will let you use it for a two-year supply of inexpensive gas from Alberta oil sands ... :-) Fair?

Sounds like a plan Marek:-)

Unfortunately, even though we're surrounded by the second largest known oil reserve in the world, the price at the pumps here right now is 99.9 cents a liter. Go figure.

I'm holding off for now. Will wait for the reviews, and for the price to come down. I'm not sure that the deficiencies of the SD9 & SD10 have been addressed to a level that warrants an upgrade. I have a Sony Alpha that works great in the areas where the Sigma suffers.

The Camera was sent back to Japan. It took two months to come back to me. Several internal components, as well as the battery tray were replaced. The camera is much more reliable now. I had an loaner SD10 provided, but I bought the Sony during the month that I had no DSLR. It is a great camera. Really unappreciated. The SSS allows for incredible handheld shots. The IQ is on par with the D200 (as I only shoot in Raw format).
Thanks

Marek

Ouch, two months without your camera even though you had a loaner is just brutal. I really hope that Sigma will designate some solid distributor who actually acts as an importer and representative.

Marek

That's not too bad a price at only $100 or so more than the U.S. price after currency conversion.
The SD14 is well hidden on the Gentec site. If you look under
digital then kits you will find the body only for $1999 Canadian.

I found it by pure accident.
Thanks and regards

We bought both our SD10's from Broadway Camera outta BC... Dealt with Henry, was treated very well, no complaints. Saved the PST by purchasing out of province too!

PS: I sent him a note a couple days ago about their pricing and availability, and expect an answer any time... =)
