Hi!

Just curious. I'm not rough with my equipment, by any means, but I'm having trouble getting over the feeling that my G2 is terribly delicate. Has anyone had problems with theirs from "normal" use?

Also, mine makes a "rattle" noise inside, if i simply tilt it front to back. It does it with the battery removed, as well. I know the lens barrel is a little loose, and that's supposed to be normal, but I don't think that's what I'm hearing either. Anyone know if this is a normal noise? The only thing I have to compare to is a Sony DSC-S85 that I had for a while. I don't recall it sounding like it had loose parts.

Thanks for the help.
Jason

I'm a little concerned about that rattle. It's done it since new, but seems to work fine. Anyone want to shake theirs a little and let me know that it's not just mine?

Thanks.

The G2, like virtually all digital cameras, has almost no moving parts. I wouldn't worry too much about messing it up, short of dropping it on cement... But then, that would ruin almost anything.

The rattle is disturbing. Mine doesn't do it, either. I would get that looked at.

Mine has a very slight rattle when shaken, but I'm not concerned about it since I tracked it to the lens barrel. If I put my finger on the rim of the lens system and wiggle it, I can get a slight movement and this makes the same sound as the rattle when I shake it. I would suggest it's normal.

Jason,

Do this little test with the camera turned off. Hold the camera in your right hand with the strap secured so that it won't rattle. Wiggle the camera and listen to the rattle. Now extend your index finger and place it lightly against the camera barrel and wiggle again. If you still hear the rattle get the camera looked at. Nothing else should be rattling.

There was a post a few days ago by someone whose G2 fell from a car lift in a grarage - about 8ft to the concrete floor. His posted picture of the G2 showed a badly dented case but the G2 worked fine. Don't know whether or not his rattled though. Perhaps we'll hear form him.

Hello Jason,
I received my G2 this afternoon and have not yet had a chance to try it out. While the battery is charging I have been reviewing the forum and ran across your post.

Holding the camera and rotating 90 degrees front to back I hear the noise you are refering to even when stabilizing the lens. I can't locate where the click comes from but I assure you it has not received any rough treatment since it was opened.

Since other owners have the same experience I not concerned.--wino

Well, now I'm really concerned. It's not the lens barrel that I'm hearing. It's not the buttons, not the battery. It's coming from inside in the area behind the lens and feels like it could be a part of the lens system inside (but not the barrel that extends) moving around. I'm not talking about shaking the camera; Just holding it normally and tilting it front to back with my wrist. I can feel and hear a "clunk" sound. I really just assumed that it was normal, but now I'm not so sure.

Thanks for the input.
Jason

I checked mine and have no "rattle" I think you should return your camera or send it back to Canon to be safe.

if I shake it hard enough I can hear a rattle, it sounds like
a small plastic piece, not like glass rattling around.
Perfectly normal I imagine, ive only had mine for 3 weeks
and ive treated it like a baby.

Thanks for the input. My noise is not hard at all to hear/feel. I've had the camera for less than a month, so I think I'll return it and try my luck with a different one. It's a shame really, cause this one had no hot pixels and no bad pixels on the LCD either. It functions great, but that noise is just too much to be normal, and this is a very expensive item....

Re: G2 delicate
G2 marked by tripod

Installing it my el cheapo tripod result the aread near the tripod socket to be marked. It is caused by tripod pin. I immediately taped around G2's tripod socket.

Re: G2 rattle noise inside
Mine rattles and clunk

Gently shaking my G2, at first I did not hear the rattle. When I position my ear at the bottom of G2, I hear the rattle. A wild guess....servo motor? gears? shutter?
I hear the clunk when I slowly rotate G2

I think the rattle and clunk is normal. Gotta remind myself to be gental with G2.--TVG riding a Train à Grande Vitesse. Life is fast.Photography skill: Newbie/Novice/Point and shootOwn: Canon PowerShot G2

If I tilt or rock my camera back and forth with a finger holding the lens part, I hear a sound as well....a light chunk chunk chunk chunk. I think it's normal. You may also try tightening the ring (the one you need to unscrew to attach an adapter like the Lensmate) around the lens because it tends to get loose.
Thanks for the input.
