Hi do a lot of hunting...

Moose, and deers etc...

Hunting is often done in the morning before it gets properly light, and the deers often are 50-100 meters away. What kind of lens should I buy to be able to take good pictures in such conditions?

I guess the more silent the lens is the better...

I got a Canon 350D

canon 100-400 or the 400 prime or the 500 or 600. Depends on how much money you want to get rid of

You need at least a 400 mm

Do you want to photograph the animals before or after you shoot them? If it's the latter, you could get away with a noisy lens. If it's the former, then I'd just sell your gun, get a nice Canon 70-200mm and have fun shooting those little deer without harming them -:)

Hey Zukey, are yuo a tree hugger

I have shot a lot of deer with a rifle, and have no interest in shoooting dead ones with a camera only live ones

Don't know if he is a tree hugger or not. But I sure get the impression that he is anti-hunting or anti-gun. If the OP wants to take shot of the before, during, and after that is his choice. Hey look at that, I used the word (choice) is that what or rights are about, choice.

So in short if he wants to take a shot of the gory aftermath let him do so. Also if the other guy is a tree huger or anti-what ever, so be it. Just don't impose your belifes on others.

Er... there's nothing anit-gun in there - I thought it was relevant what state the animal is in as regards the noise of the lens. And my suggestion about sellingthe gun was not an imposition of belief.

What kind of puzzles me is the idea of getting a photo of a a wild animal - let's say you're trying to take a beautiful picture, with good light, good composition etc. - and then blowing the animal's brains out. I really don't want to offend anyone here, but it's an experience I never had. The way I know photography (though this is not a universal definition) is all about capturing, freezing, a moment, light, impressions, expressions, whatever.

The point is, if you are concerned enough to worry what kind of lens is best to photgraph the animal alive, then why not leave the animal alive for the next photgrapher?

Duh! So you can hang the picture of the live deer right next to the head on the wall! You can also relive the excitement and aim the rifle scope at the picture any time you wanted and pretend the blowing brains out part all over again. Awesome!

It is difficult to drag a carcass around to work and church or where ever. It is much easier to bring along just the picture of what you killed. And honestly, those pictures of the hunter holding the up the head of the bloody carcass with its tounge dangling out and a blank stare is just not as inspiring as it was 3 minutes prior.

I wil have to say for my defence here... that I haven't actually shot any deers yet... and maybe I won't for some time.. not everyone feel comfertable to shoot a deer, and u often don't know if you are capable before you are you got one aimed.

So my plan is to attend a few hunts this autum, but also bring my camera.. maybe I can warm up with shooting a few with my cam.. :-)

Anyway.. At tripod and min 400mm lens .. it would be great with the possibility for a 2x converter on the lens.. My budget is a bit small so there more for my money the better...

Any suggestions, maybe I can get a second hand one.. ?

Make sure you post a picture of the deer on the dinner table I would hate to think you were taking pic's of just another mindless killing.

But if you are eating it, well, that's a different story.

Canon 400 or 100-400 will cost around 1k that 's thousand. There's nothing wrong with hunting as long as you are within the law and dont overstep the boundaries. You should also be prepared to make good use of the meat

I can say that since i started photography I am more interested in the capture on the camera than I am with the bullet

I eat most of the dear... even the left overs are used.. MMmm sussages.

Any cheaper good alternatives than Canon lenses... The cheaper the better...

Thats actually very very funny.

You talk about the right of choice, and other's beliefs. But thats complete bullsh!t. sure, you have the right of choosing if u wanna shot the damn deer or not, but i guess its not the choice of the deer to die or not. i guess i should just shoot you. who cares. i have the right to. dont i? aha

Bargain basement, canon 75-300mm III at about $150. Get close, use good technique. Get acceptable results.

Next up, sigma 70-300mm APO super macro $250. Same as above.

Now step up to the big boy table, all of these lenses have excellent performance for wildlife, Sigma 50-500mm at about $1000, canon 400mm f/5.6 L at about $1100, canon 100-400mm IS L at about $1400.

I was an avid hunter, loved the chase and the prize. Then I got into photography and I think it bumped the hunting fun up another notch. I hunt with the camera and the guns just don't have the same appeal.

The best part is that there is no season for hunting with a camera.

These were taken with a canon 70-200mm f/2.8 L, but I was very, very close and would not recommend this lens for wildlife, I use a canon 400mm f/5.6 L for wildlife now:

And these are a couple of shots I have of wildlife with my 400mm f/5.6 L.

I really like the concept of "hunting with a camera" that some people have mentioned. I used to be a regular shotgun and rifle hunter but lately, I just take my camera.

My latest goal is to capture a Barbary Sheep, but the opportunity hasn't presented itself yet. When I asked a locally well-known outdoorsman (and successful Barbary sheep hunter) for any tips on capturing a picture of one, he told me "just go to a zoo." I guess some people don't get it.

Ever consider an Adirondack Smartscope? For some reason I don't see putting hunting and photography together. Too much gear to take around at the same time.

I do not belive that stalking me and then putting a bullet in my head is leagal. And also what you said about shooting me could but you a** in prison. I hope that was not a direct threat. I do belive in the right to bear arms and I do so. And every one else that is comforatable with them should. It is only a matter of time that the do-gooders try and take them away from us. Well they will be prying them from my dead cold hands.

Looked like a threat to me also Dennis. You know what gets me about these anti hunting, anti gun, anti animal killing people......i bet 90% of them enjoy a good hamburger or steak.

There's nothing wrong with hunting or carrying a gun for protection.
