Have only had the camera for a week, and seem to be having zoom problems. Firstly after zooming past a certain point, my subject is out of focus and secondly the zoom itself doesn't seem to be bringing subjects in as close as they could be. What am I doing wrong??

Thanks!

How far away is your subject ? Check to make sure it is not on macro, the little flower sign on the top display with the 3 buttons. Hope it helps you, let us know.

Or conversely, if you are close to the subject, you may need to turn on the Macro mode at full zoom. I don't quite understand your observation that the zoom "doesn't seem to be bringing subjects in as close as they could be".--Misha

Firts of all print the manual that it is on the CD in PDF format .

You will find out many more informations ,rather than the basic manual of 38 pages .
The full manual is 207 pages .

About your question i can omly guess that you tried to focus on something that was very close to you ,like less than a meter distance.

You have to learn to use the Macro mode ,only by some reading you will get the control of the camera .

I am new owner of the camera too, the last three weeds i have read and still do, many books and web pages about digital photography, and about analog cameras too, my brain is ready to melt down . I am trying really hard to get in to the spirit of photography .
This forum is great but you need to get the basics by your self.

Kirakos,

My UZI came with a 211 page manual, identical to the one I downloaded in pdf format.

In fact, it came with the manual (separate ones) in three languages

There was no 38 page manual..

I would love to see a few more posts on this subject as I am having similar problems especially when in macro mode. I am aware of the distance restrictions when using macro, but if I am, say, about a foot from my subject, and try to zoom in to get a close-up, full-frame shot, the camera refuses to focus. Often, adjusting the zoom or my position will allow it to focus, but I am wondering how in the heck people are getting some of the exquisite close-ups that I have seen posted in these forums and in other galleries using the UZI? Are additional lenses or pro techniques being used? I was looking forward to getting some great close-ups in my garden this summer but am becoming doubtful. Someone please divulge your secrets!

This was the very first pix I took with my UZI and it was shot in macro
mode. If I recall, this was set at full wa and I moved the camera in or out
to fucus.

thats pretty tricky with the monster lens of the Uzi...it'll only focus that close even in macro at a wider zoom setting get a +1,+2 & +4 magnifying set of 55mm lenses with the step-up so you can stack them without vignetting....or back off and zoom in in macro mode from several feet away....the magnifyers would be the way to go. I did most of these: http://www.pbase.com/rrawzz/butterflyniagara with just the +4 magnifyer on...

are you halfpressing after each zoom movement? if you frame a shot and halfpress to focus. then decide to get tighter, you have to refocus with the halfpress.... or you can try full time AF & see if it still doesn't work...if it won't focus in FullTime AF then you have a problem...assuning you're not too close or too far in macro for a zoom setting....

Those are great pic's Ross. What kind of close up set do you have ? If I could just get a +4, would you go that route, or do you use the others much ? I know it will have very narrow depth of field, but can you change the apeture to help that out ?
BTW your bear picture is real cute, I'll be sending my SIL the link.
Thanks,
Greg

Rebecca,

I think 1 foot is too close for a full zoom on macro. If your just going to be looking on the computer, or posting on the web, you can do a crop to double the image size. Meaning cut out the center half. I'm sure you would rather have a full viewfinder though. Some people use close up sets, I don't have one though.

Rebecca,

To get the minimum distance in Macro, meaning a shot at 4 inches, the lens has to be brought to the full wide angle position and then you focus by moving the camera forward or back. The zoom can not be used in Macro at 4 inches.--No Sarcasm Here! Yeah, Right! :)

It CAN zoom in macro mode, in fact the closest macro can be obtained not at full wide angle, but with some zoom, however, zoom is limited to about 3-4x at about 4 inches. --Misha

Phil, where did you download the C-2100 pdf manual from?
I couldn't find it on the olympusamerica site or on the CD.

I've been wanting a soft copy since I got the camera.--HerbNo Sarcasm Here! Yeah, Right! :)

OK! I guess you squeezed a little zoom out of it.

I must admit that I fell victim to the directions on page 83, "in da book".--HerbNo Sarcasm Here! Yeah, Right! :)

I have the close-up set from quantaray from Ritz $27 for the set I think...that was the 1st and only time I've used any of them...I'll be stackin next time I try them but I was practically pushin those fies off thier perch with that +4...If I was 2 inches away I'd be suprised...I'm sure you can adjust aperture but I doubt the depth of field will change much...I'm pretty ignorant to DoF & how to play with it so I can't really add anything of value to changing it...But I wanted to see the hairs on thier little bodies and pulled it off with the magnifyer...You can get just a single +4 magnifyer but the set is the most common configuration they're sold in....

Yes, please! I would love to find out where you downloaded this file. I tried to find at the Olympus website and even emailed them and noone could help.

Thanks for the reply,

That is a good price for my tastes, all the other filters I have are Quantaray, and work fine for me. Can you back off on distance and still zoom a little ? I don't really want to get any closer to the bees I shoot. Maybe the macro with the A-200 would give me more space but a larger image ?
Thanks,
Greg
