E100RS for $399-$15

Hi Inigo,

I just took a look at your e100/UZI pic pair. They are consistent with what I found: e100 is sharper, more in focus, and better color.
A few quick clicks in PS can bring the UZI shot pretty much in line
with the E-100 one. I'm wondering if it was also shot at 1/30
how much closer the two would have been?

I did my own similar tests with the two cameras:

With results reported in this thread:

Am I the only one noticing this ?
My friend has purchased E100RS for $399 then because it was an open
box he got extra $15 from Frys Electronics. Their computer showed 4
total. I have really impressed him with my 2100 but when he saw and
then tried E100RS. His decision was made almost immediately.
Definitely E100 quality is superior to 2100. We tested the hot/dead
pixels at 10 seconds. The LCD screen was clean black at X3
magnification. It is very convenient to have two memory cards CF
and SM. The image on LSD and on a monitor screen was very very
clean.

Holy Guacamole! The difference in sharpness is stunning. Did both have the same internal sharpness settings, BTW? I saw your thread with requests for comparison ideas, but missed the results, until now.

Interesting observation about noise and ISO. My Uzi seems to be a
little cleaner too, though I'm not 100% certain that it's not just
able to "hide" its noise a little better due to its higher resolution. Oddly,
I recall seeing a previous thread where someone with both cameras
specifically tested for noise and their E100 came out much cleaner
than the Uzi.

In low light (where you'd be usiing higher ISO) I find the E100 has much
better white balance out of the camera while the Uzi tends toward a
more yellow image. (Both using auto WB)
1). at ISO100, my e100 is more focused and sharper than my UZI
2). at ISO200 and above, my e100 is more noisy than my UZI (image
wise, not the sound)
3). both have lots of hot pixels when shutter speed slower than 3
sec. Almost useless for shutter speed slower than 5 sec. My e100 is
slight worse in terms of hot pixels.
4). the color on my UZI tends to be "warmer". the e100 seems to
produce more acurate color

I did the comparison just for curiousity. I have no intension to
start a war -- I have both !!

Sharpness was set to "normal" for both cameras, white balance
was on "auto", ISO set at 100, handheld, IS on. Both cameras
at full zoom.

After encouraging reports about the E100rs, I purchased the last one at the second Fry's I visited. Had to pay $599 less $30 for open box. Bought it now for a couple of reasons, one of which was the store policy of meeting sale prices within a 30 day period after purchase. Which means i can get a rebate if any Fry's holds a $399 sale for this camera. SO I am asking you fine people to let me know ASAP whenever you learn of a sale on this camera. My guess I have to be in my store while the other one is holding the sale. Sale can be at any store!. Thanks in advance.

Oups if i did this mistake i am sorry :)
My public alpologies to any one ..
Perhaps you were thinking of the E-10, which has a less powerful
optical zoom?

Andy.
The UZi superiority comes to the point that have all the extras on
it , Zoom etc etc , the E100RS to get the zoom power of the UZi
,you need to pay lots money more in lences .

The RS100 does appear to be sharper. However, I wonder about the difference when you go to print. Has anyone compared 5X7 or 8X10 prints from both cameras?

Now that I have both, I used my E100 for some baseball shots. The only real difference in the pics that I could see was that I thought that the color was somewhat better. I have only used this camera out of doors, and since it has rained for the past few days, I am waiting for more opportunities to check out my posting. In this day of Elements and Photshop I really don't think it makes much difference.

Looks to me like the 100 may be set on SHARP and UZI is a little overexposed compared to 100. Unfortunately if your not in CA. doubt if you will be able to get a 100 for $399.

Was the UZ set in Spot or iESP focus?

I have found that Spot yields better results with the UZ. Also were these hand-held or tripod shots? Tripod shots with the IS turned on tends to yield poorer shots with the UZ.

Doesn't the E100 have a faster shutter?

I have both & concure that they both have weaknesses and pluses that niether share and I'm happy and complete now with having both....lol....
Both cameras have their respective strenghts and weaknesses but
either is capable of capturing wonderful pics.

The e110rs has custom white balance, takes both SM and CF, has
precapture and 15 fpsbut the c2100uz has .5 more megapixels and it
argueably focuses faster according to some recent threads. I'd like
to have both : )

Does your ERS focus indoors/low-light as good as your UZI...Mine doesn't even come close indoors/low-light...
I have both cameras and use the E-100RS exclusively; to my mind, it
really is (as one of the review sites described it) an "Uzi on
steroids." For my purposes, the extra pixels of the Uzi matter not
at all. At $399 or a little less, the E-100RS is a downright steal.

Mind you, I love the Uzi and gladly keep it as a backup camera.
However, there is precious little that the Uzi offers that the
E-100RS does not, and there are many things that the E-100RS offers
that the Uzi does not.

I too want to avoid a war: both cameras are great joys to use, and
certainly folks should feel free to pick the tool that best suits
their usage/creativity. However, I did want to clear up that the
Uzi and the E-100RS have the SAME zoom lens and stabilization
system.

Perhaps you were thinking of the E-10, which has a less powerful
optical zoom?

Good point Misha, I'm goin with Hollands theory that the sharpness algorithym in the ers is much more agressive than the uzis & am quite happy with both since the ers sucks outright in low light where the Uzi shines at least as far as focus is concerned.
I own both. I was told both share the same lens. For months, I have
believed that both should produce equicalent image quality. It
proved that I had been wrong this afternoon after taking same shots
from each camera and comparing them. The shooting conditions were
almost identical. Below are the pictures (top is E100, bottome is
Uzi):
Sorry, I don't think it proves anything. I don't have the E100, but
I have the 2100, and I know it can produce much sharper pictures.
The fact that the 2100 did not focus well in a particular sitation
does not mean inferior image quality.
