Guys,

As announcement of upcoming Alpha models has thrilled all of us why not take your time to let Sony know some of your best laid thoughts as per what do you seriously expect from the shown models or want to be changed. Now, although we know they are prototypes & we don't have anything in our hands but still we may be able to divert or enhance Sony's intentions for these models (of course, only if Sony peeps in here)

I would ask all of you to be specific & list your idea/thought in subject line as well so that it's easy for everyone. Let's see what do we think of upcoming models.

I do not expect any negative critics as in why do we need this or will it be of any value...let's keep it simple & dream of something good. Sony did give us message about what they've in pipeline, we can turn it into the best. Here's your opportunity.

(p.s. There are going to be lot of individual threads like this as complaints or suggestions so I thought why not start to organize one good thread, so go ahead & design a better Alpha! We still have some time left.)

a) most important are sensors with less noise than the one in the A-100. MP don't matter. 10 MP would be enough.

b) give the user the possiblity to set custom back- front-focussing adjustments for the various lenses that they are using. (I have at least 2 lenses that show back-focussing on the A-100. If I can't correct this, I will have to sell these lenses.)
c) make the bodies weather sealed.

d) stay as close as possible to the ergonomics/controls of the KM 7D. I would like direct controls to set ISO and also exposure correction.
e) have a grip sensor to activate the eye sensor (like in a Minolta 9xi).

f) the rubber coating on my A-100 grip is coming off completely after 6 months now. That should not happen.
g) have bright and large view-finders.

I'll add:
  • Better AF tracking
  • more fps (5+)
  • RGB Histogram
  • Programmable bracketing (EV, WB, etc) - specifically for HDR

I would also add noise... not sensor noise, but shutter release noise. My 7D is loud, the A100 is loud, sony should do something to make their cameras more "polite".

Better Flash (built in radio triggering...?)

Better AF speed(as good as film 7 or better, just make them all crosshairs)

Better AF tracking

Wider AF points (like the Nikon d1x (i think))

More AF points

Better FPS (at least 5, faster with crop mode available)

Mostly the same controls as 7D

Must must must have the same switch as 7D for drive mode and for WB.

Needs a better directional control on back for selecting AF points

Shutter could be a bit snappier

Add an AF on button like C/N. I used a 30D for a bit and I really liked this as it was much better then our current AF/MF. This would then not allow us to MF b/c our lenses don't have all the time DMF. What I suggest is make it a custom function - the user chooses whether it is a AF/MF buttion or a AF-On button. That would be great.

High/Low Zone needs dedicated button or something.

Just add some programmable buttons somewhere. That would be cool.

The grips need to be really glued to the body, mine is coming off too.

Include flash adapter to go over to standard ISO

Reduce the mirror slap noise

the ergonomics of the 7d was great! I agree with all these comments, plus
i'd emphasis the knobs to control the:
exposure compensation
flash compensation
drive control

i'd also like the camera to automatically also save as RAW, when the iso is above a specified level, to be set by the user thru the menus.

Wi-Fi
Full control through the USB/Wi-Fi
Stream pictures over USB/Wi-Fi
Settings backup to memory card
1/12000 shutter
Automatic HDR mode (multiple bracket)
24mp full frame sensor WITH sss AND Low noise!
Wireless RF multi flash

Zeiss 24-70 f2.8
Zeiss 70-200 f2.8

A macro lense going to 1:5, like the Canon MP-E-65 ;-) (I'm just jealous of the Canon guys posting these incredible razor sharp macro shots... ;-)

Controls a la 7D: separate shutter and aperture dials, ISO button, exposure/flash compensation dial

LOWER noise at higher ISO, add 3200

Quieter shutter!!!

Larger grip like 7D, unlike A100

Forget scene modes...add customized setting modes, like 7D

12MP minimum

Faster shutter (5fps?), cropped mode OK

Shorter pre-flash/flash lag (or better way to set flash exposure?)

Radio wireless flash rather than optical

Rational lens prices!

How about a solid announcement, and summer release date?

Many good points here to agree on.

I'd also like an "unmanned automation option" for programmable shutter releases. For example with intervals of 1-60 minutes, or even days with automatic power down in between if possible...

I forgot: a better dynamic range would be very very nice. And in parallel some automated multi-exposure-HDR capability.

  • RGB histogram
  • zoom up to 1:1
  • display of over- and underexposed parts while zooming into picture
  • extended range for exposure bracketing (+ -5EV) with extended steps (1/3, 1/2, 1, 2, 3EV)
  • embedded color profiles in jpgs for all color spaces
  • display of EVs for the segments (like Maxxum/Dynax/Alpha 7)

I agree with most of the wishes here for the new body(s), In addition, I want to see these items in a firmware release for the A100 NOW.

A super fine (lower compression) JPEG setting. Even though I shoot 90% RAW.

Better exposure metering. Both of my A100's shoot about 2/3 EV dark in RAW mode.

Shorten the preflash interval.

Give me the option of stronger noise reduction in JPEG mode. The A100 has the detail to handle more. The DEC menu is a great place for this. :)

You can lead a horse to water, but it takes a hell of a man to drown the damned thing.

An unusual request..heheh I would like to see the lug points for attaching the strap moved down the side to the middle of the camera. So the camera would point down while hanging around your neck or over your shoulder, even with a small lens on it. The LCD would aways be in view if you need to look at it, but more important, the LCD wouldn't rub against buttons or zippers, etc. I used to scratch up the LCD cover on my 7D. There is not a cover on the A100 I have now. Nothing to hurt or scratch on the bottom tho. I did buy a Delkin Hood Pro for the A100, but I really don't like it much.

I saw on another forum..forget which, Canon or Nikon, some people complaining about a certain model's on/off switch, they said you if had a bit of a belly on you, just moving and walking was bumping the switch and turning the camera off or on. Moving the lugs down would solve something like this also.

Is this a wierd idea because it isn't a 'traditional' way of carrying a camera? All comments good or bad are welcome.

Thanks much,
Russ

Dear Sony,

You may be planning some really nice cameras and lenses. However, can you do something about the prices of your lenses? An examination of your lenses against the major players, Canon and Nikon, show that the street prices for a Sony lens are a lot higher than the competition. I just looked at another forum discussion of your 70-200mm f/2.8, and the street price for it is about $800 more than that of a comparable Canon or Nikon lens. And your lens doesn't have the anti-shake function in the lens, as yours is in the body. I know that SSM is expensive, but is it that much more than Canon's USM? If it is, perhaps your engineers should go back to the drawing boards and design a better cheaper motor. Oh wait, as I recall, your lenses are all more expensive than Canon's or Nikon's, whether it has SSM or not.

It's a good thing that I have most of the lenses I will need when you come out with a FF DSLR, and will probably get a Sigma or Tamron 70-200 f/2.8, rather than your pricey version. However, I worry about those that don't have any lenses and will suffer from your prices.

Sincerely,
cyainparadise

I absolutely agree. In addition, the 'normal' way of carrying a camera sets off the eye start focusing, which chews battery if you are walking with the camera on, ready to take a pic of wildlife, say?

The camera hangs this way most of the time, if you have a long lens on it, though, so I don't think it is a critical item.......

Not enough time to take pictures.......

Dear Amolmd,

I think it's a very good initiative to let Sony know
what future custumers whould keep in mind whether
or not to buy one of these announced models.

At the end of the year I'm planning to buy a DSLR
and one of the main things I look for is:
  • Tethered shooting
(This is one of the things missing in Sony's A100)
Just reed the following links
http://alphatracks.com/archives/12
http://www.dyxum.com/gear/camera/index.asp
  • GPS would be nice too
I hope Sony will ad these features, 'cause I'm very satisfied
with my Sony DSC-F828 but I need a new camera with the
goodies that comes with a DSLR instead of a fixed lens.

But I think we have to wait a few more month's
to see if Sony took the advise of their (future) customers
