Now people will purchase Canon again

Sigma originally announced this lens back on Sept 28 2006. I guess this announcement is to say it is now available? I don't see any additional information (price, mount availability) over their original announcement.

Also I guess it is not an HSM lens, so if it was cheaper than the Nikon it would still not be a viable option for the D40/D40X.

Can't wait to see what the performance and price point is on it.

Is it an HSM lens?

An all in one, 18-200mm optically stabilized lens was something that wasn't available for Canon before.

Even though I have changed my mind on it and probably will never get one, hearing about the 18-200mm VR was one of the things that got me initially looking at Nikon. It would not have been the deciding factor but it did generate some interest on my part.

Do you think majority of the new Nikon DSLR owners bought their units because of the 18-200vr? I don't think so. Although I just got one but it's not what I had planned to use when I bought my D50 last Christmas. It was because I didn't like the feel of the Canon XTi. And because it was on sale. Another reason is that I have an old 35-80MM Nikon lens and SB-22 from my film N50. But due to the 1.5x crop and no i-TTL they were rendered useless. So my conclusion is when people buy Nikon it's because of the feel and not because of the 18-200vr lens. Just my opinion... Thanks for you thoughts,

Not the majority, but at least some do. I'm considering buying a DSLR and the 18-200VR is a big plus for buying a Nikon.

The options are now here, astound!
Whose effort on, can not be frowned.
The test of time, and choice, compound!
Of glass and output, stand their ground?

The application of the OS, whee!
that tripods fall, and bended knee.
Become the norm, and you and me
Pick up the scraps, at cost with glee.

It certainly does but unfortunately I cannot see anywhere this being a Hsm/Usm/Afs lens so focus will be tad slower than Nikon Afs 18-200 model.

Regarding switching Canon users switching I must say the 18-135, 18-200, 70-300 Afs, 105 Macro Afs are worthly causes but it is same with some of Canon offerings especially:-

17-40 F4 L
24-105 F4 L IS
70-200 F4 L IS
Canon 5d/1d Mk 3 (if you can afford these beauties...)

Dunno about the 18-200 but one of the main considerations I made when choosing Nikon was that the 18-70 was easily the best kit lens in its class when I moved from pentax to Nikon. So yes the lens is important very important. I agree with Morris.

The sigma 18-200mm is not not having F5.6 at the far end have to manual focus, resolution may not better than nikon... and with the latest D40X having much better performance than canon 400D, I think it is more like that new comer to the dslr world would jump into nikon camp :)

please tell me how a 1.5 crop factor that goes along with your digital camera having a "different film size" makes the lens you had useless?

just wondering because I use old lenses all day that work just fine on my camera.

hi, I use a camera, flash, and lens.

I didn't mean it can't be used. What I meant was 35mm x 1.5 = 52mm isn't wide enough IMO for making group shots in tight places or landscape shots. Even the 28-80G which came with my original purchase is now in the box. But I guess we all have different uses.
What old lenses did you have?
