Hi and good morning

Can you tell me the lenses you currently have as no point in suggesting something you already own.

The MB-D200 works perfectly with the S5 and the S5 batteries - using 2x S5 batteries with mine.

Kind regards and best wihes.

Mark

Depends on how wide you need to go. I like the Tamron 28-75/2.8, it has wonderful color, contrast and resolution in a very compact and light package. Great for hand holding all day long. My friend and a long long time wedding pro, and the most popular and expensive in our area, uses the Nikon 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5D, and nobody can fault the quality of his work. I see a lot of posts regarding sharpness and ultimate resolution here which imo has little to do with pleasing portraits.

Any 60-90mm macro lens would double up as a nice portrait lens for closer stuff if you're hunting sharpness, I know the Tamron 90mm makes excellent portraits. Not very fast focus, though.

The Tamron 28-75 f2.8 (FOcal length may be in error, but it's that ballpark and it's f2.8) is absolutely adored by a friend of mine who's a working pro. Good range, f2.8, cheap, light with great results. Buy locally though so you can return it if you get a dodgy sample!

I use two lenses almost exclusively for wedding and events, the 17-55/2.8, and the 70-200/2.8. I also carry either a 28/2.0 or a fast 50, sometimes both. Actually, usually both. Something wider would be nice too, but I haven't really missed it yet. One of these days...

The Sigma 35 1.4 would be an exceptional lens to add to this collection. It will be my next lens.

Thank you very much, my general use lenses are: Tokina 12-24/4, Nikon 17-55/2.8, Nikon 80-200/2.8.

For weddings and events I favour the Nikon 17-55/2.8 since I really need the wide in tight spaces and the general flexibility.

I use the Nikor 28-70 2.8 a fast lens good range for just about everything. The 70-200 2.8 is great for ceremonies. 12-24 is nice but limited for weddings. I shoot about 50 weddings a year. S3 with sb800 and the above lenses. Plus alot of extras. Good luck.

I sorry, on my S2 I used one len the tamron f/2.8 28-75. I was satistfied and loved it (maybe because I didn't know any better :)). I never take the lens off (afraid of dust) after I had heard the problems on the mirror issues with dust.

I will still use the S2 with that lens as a backup (won't take lens off).

But since I was getting a new S5. I thought this may be the time to look at a better lens. I did order a tamron 11-17 based on the sales persons suggestion. This would hold me until I got your valued opinions.

That is the informaton I was looking for. If possible I'd like two get lens in my wedding gear to used on weddings.

Also have any one tested the MD200 adapters with batteries?
I don't want to lock myself in with two np150 batteries on a shoot.

The brown truck is suppose to be here today.

Yes the 17-50 Tamron is getting good reviews everywhere I've read about it. If I didn't already own the 17-55 Nikkor I'd probably pick one up myself. That would make a good all round lens to have on the S5 if cost is a factor and actually , even if it's not !

Now that the day has moved on and I'm more settled down, I can say we use the 17-55 Nikkor the most. I use the 70-200 VR for the longer shots in church or for candids out of the church. I still keep the 28-105 in the roller case for backup and still use it now and then too ( same goes for the 50 1.8). I also like the 24-85D for wedding work and for high school senior work at the beach. We still keep the Sigma 15-30 in the case as well for weddings and scenics ( scenics are personal shots usually though).

Having two bodies will be a blessing but I'd like a little more spread in focal length personally. In other words , the 17-50 on one body is good but the 28-75 isn't gaining much over it on the second body ( just the 55-75 range, that's not a lot ). I think the OP needs to have faith in changing lenses now and then and one of the bodies will need to get a lens swap now and then !!

FWIW to anyone here, I did an exif data check on my wedding shooting a couple of years ago and came away realizing that I shoot a lot at or around 33 or 34mm. I think it's worth a check for anyone to do this, I was really surprised to fnd this out ! This doesn't mean I don't shoot wider or longer but from there I do tend to peg the focal length ranges on the lens I'm using. It just seemed that a lot of shots were in this mid range. Otherwise, a lot of 17mm. shots for receptions during group dancing. I peg the 70-200 at 200 for the speakers shots at the pulpit, had been using a 24-135 with no VR ( not enough reach too much shake) and I just couldn't take it any more and broke down last year and got the 70-200 which ended my problems in that regard.

Going over your exif can give you a good clue as to what you need to purchase next. Match your exif to your memory ( in your mind not your camera !!!LOL) and see if you find you are at the end of a lenses focal length and stretching for more. THat's what happened to me with the 15-30, I might have it on for the last of the dances and the real last dance comes along and the max focal length is 30 to try and pull something more in with, so you walk on the dance floor and get in real close. It sent me on the search for more focal lenght on my wide lens just when the 17-55 came out, so that's what we own now. I also saw that I rarely went past 17mm. with the 15-30, so it really turned out to be a limited use lens for me in terms of wedding coverage. Others touted it largely and I did shoot with it a lot at one point in time.

A 17-85 2.8 AF-S would be a great lens to own for general wedding coverage !!!! Too bad they don't make one. For me anyway that would just leave me to grab those few church shots at 200mm.

I havnen't seen the S5 as yet. But why wouldn't the lens you used with the S2 work just as well? I moved up from the S2 to the S3 and only purchased new a coupld new lens for better quality.

Currently, I'm using a Tamron 28-70 2.8 constant appature; a Tokina 12-24 and a Nikon 70-200 2.8 VR lens. This just about covers every wedding I'v done lately. I'l like to add a fisheye but the prices just are too high to justify it now, considering how seldom I'd actually use it.

Wow, great information here. Thanks everybod. I just learned about the 1.5 multiply rule. I'll pass it on it may help someone else, or prove to be wrong. The sale guy in the store shared it with me. Say you have a 11mm-17mm lens. if you multiply each number by 1.5 he says that gives you the real measure of your lens. In this example it would be 16.5mm- 27mm.
I guess its time to hear from the pros.

How about AF-S 17-55/2.8 DX on your S5, and AF 85/1.4 on your S2?

Cheers

If you multiply your existing 28-75 ( I think you said you use this one) by 1.5 you will see that the wide end isn't very wide after all !! In using the 28-105 it was about my only complaint with the lens as a genral user. You can always use certain more specific lenses as well but it's nice to get down around 17mm. on the wide end , at least for coverage around here where we may have some older smaller churches or chapels to shoot in.
