Will Canon Continue to Update The D30 Firmware?

I was just wondering since Canon has now discontinued the D30, if they will still continue to update the D30 firmware or is this it? Maybe this is why we haven't seen the latest firmware update on Canon's web site?

Does anyone know?

Thanks
Allan

How much difference can it make? Like none of the updates to date have been all that crucial...

Only Canon knows, but:

What has happened in the G1 arena is quite revealing: there was a great (for P&S) camera with a lot of enthusiastic followers who compiled lists of improvements they would like to see in firmware, contacted Canon repeatedly, ran tests to prove bugs, etc.

Then, a year later, the G2 came out and as it seemed all the features found their way into the new camera. The G1 received none of them - BUT it did get a few firmware upgrades to fix problems . The latest firmware was released this year in fact, to fix some rare charging issue.

So ... there is some evidence that Canon will fix problems with firmware, but will probably not make an older camera better with upgrades. I think for the D30 you could at least expect that.

Now - I'll let others argue whether the autofocus is a bug or a feature ;)

The sad part is that Canon probably could make the D30 autofocus better and less noise with a firmware update but won't because of the D60. :(

I doubt you'll see any additional firmware updates for the D30 unless a major major bug is found. Once they stop production, the natural tendancy is to get distance between them and the discontinued product. Keep moving forward and don't look back. That's my opinion.

Uh no... Its the same as it always was. Very good when there is enough contrast underneath one of the three focus points and not good at all when there is little contrast under all three points. But hey I actually test these things for myself. I suppose my life would be better if I just believed whatever hooey gets posted in this forum huh?

True -- I hope that they do continue to support it the same way that Kodak supports their DCS cameras.

Z,

If you want better focus, try turning on only the center focus point. Also set the * button for focus, then you can focus before setting the exposure with the shutter button. It works for me.

Canon can't do it the same way for the D30 as Kodak does it for their DCS cameras. Just compare the prices between a Kodak DCS and the Canon D30 -> the DCS cameras are pro stuff - and thats like the Kodak supports their DCS cameras!

P.S.: did you ever see a good SDK for the Canon cameras - have a look at Kodak...!

I know all this. I use these techniques when appropriate. I do not find the AF on the D30 that bad, but I am well aware that there are MUCH better systems out there and can easily understand how someone used to an EOS-1V is unhappy with the D30 AF.

I will stand by my observation that the D30 firmware upgrades do not affect autofocus performance. (The process of doing a firmware upgrade might reset certain configuration parameters, like center focus point only mode, but that's hardly relevant.)

my AF is not any better either. I almost talked you into it! ;-)

Hey, you just got that camera. Don't tell me you've outgrown it already?

So there is a business opportunity for a group of firmware freaks to find a way of making after market firmware for digital cameras (D30) I bet that they could sell upgrades for $10 a download as long as they could post tested improvements!

Never ! I just want the continue support of the firmware or share the source code! :)
