Friends,

With some help from Sigma USA and Adorama I picked up my SD14 this afternoon. The battery was charged just enough to take a few images (like 5). Two of them are posted at:

http://photo.giph.com/main.php?g2_view=core.ShowItem&g2_itemId=63369

I have uploaded both the JPEG (straight out of SPP3.0 with Auto setting) and the RAW .x3f for both images. These particular images are by no means earthshattering, but I wanted everyone to know that SD14 deliveries have begun.

My first impressions: it's smaller, lighter, and feels very natural in my hands; the shutter is buttery smooth and quiet. In fact the shutter was released for the first image before I knew it!!

I then jumped in my car and drove back to Maryland. At first light tomorrow I'm flying to Las Vegas for DIMA tomorrow and PMA Exhibits Thursday. I'm taking my SD9, SD10, and SD14 bodies with a couple of lenses. I will shoot a variety of daytime and nightime scenes with a tripod and same settings for each body. It may take me a while to process and post them, but I will sooner than later.

Best Regards,

BT

PS - I apologize for not posting the images directly here, but the particular site I uploaded to doesn't resolve the image locations to allow that yet.

It looks like a windy day?
It was 25 or so deg F with 15-30 mph winds. Brrrrrrrrr!

Fortunately it will be a little warmer in Vegas!

BT

I just processed the image of the building and the sky has a huge amount of blotchy color. Also visible in teh road. Are you getting this as well. I'm using SPP2.1.

I still see the same jagged edge problem thoguh that seems to plague Foveon sensors. Is there a newer version of the software that will do better?

BL: Thanks for posting the images. The first thing I noticed was the "better" skies. Better than the greenish tint in most SD9 images.

it can not process the SD14 RAW files properly.
You need SPP 3.0 for it

which seems to have the algorithm to process the SD14 pics but lacking other features SPP 3.0 offers.
What ever they are.
SPP 3.0 for Mac is delayed till end April

it is horrible noise in the dark areas with SPP2.1. So how much better will this be in SPP3.0? will it just be reduced, and the pictures loose the perfect sharpness as in other denoiser programms?
That would be the worst case , and i would be very pitty to have sold my SD10.

Check the Kazunori Fujieda's pbase page.

Although SD14 seems to be very noisy in SPP2.1, in SPP3.0 it gets much cleaner, and, moreover, there is no detail loss, but extra details indeed!

See the comparison of SD10 shot in SPP2.1 and SPP3.0 - there are extra details and less noise with SPP3.0.

I think SPP3.0 does not simply reduce noise by blurring details; there is something more intelligent and deep.

On blotchy sky, yes, this is bad enough case, but under certain conditions the same can happen with SD10, too.

It is hard to believe how incredibly clumsy some of the decision-makers at Sigma seem to be! After all Sigma had to suffer now that next absolutely crucial mistake! Hey, WAKE UP, or is it Harakiri you try to achieve?

Knowing that ALL x3f-developing software on the market is unable to correctly develop the new SD14 images they fail to put SPP3 on their download website before the first x3f's hit the internet. Bang, every stupid spreads "SD14 blotchy" from now on. THE best way to kill a promising product straight at the start.

Maybe I should apply as a Sigma manager, if I did such errors where I work now I would be fired within seconds!

The first thing I noticed also was the noisy blue of the sky in SPP2.1 then I Processed it with Adobe CS Raw 2.4. The blotchiness was easily controlled by moving the color temp slider to 5600 then minor adjustments for tint, contrast, saturation, and brightness. Made no adjustments to sharpness, but I also made changes to luminance smoothing.

With the above changes in Raw the image was satisfactory with a look of film (Fuji). I am impressed with the detail in the stone facade of the building and the crispness in the flags.

I posted this comparison in another thread. In-camera JPEG vs. CS3 vs. T+ polybytes vs. SPP3

Top Left: embedded JPEG
Top Right: ThumbsPlus (Polybytes)

Raven,

I agree.

It makes me wonder if someone else at Sigma U.S.A. has an addiction problem...

The SD14 came with 2 CDs; SPP3.0 for Windows and SPP2.2 for the Mac. I don't know the differences, but I'll ask the Sigma folks tonight at dinner.

Best Regards,

BT

PS - I'll also ask when the downloads will be online.

Saw that the sever these examples SD14 pics succumbed to too man y connects and finally coughed, meaning stopped accepting connections. I will restart it so others can look at the link Bill established here.

Interestingly, noted that Dpreview's forum server also coughed at the same time and my guess is it had to be restarted as well... lot's of interest in SD14, and PMA.

Until I get the other server unclogged, you can view Bill's pics here as well...
