707 for 499 (yep 499)

Below their cost or not, they have to follow their rules regardless (or lawsuits may follow), but in this case, I think it's more the case of a dumbass selling it IF the price was in pounds.

George
If Sears honors this without at least making a confirming phone
call, they are idiotic. This has to be a misprint, or something out
of the ordinary.
This has to be way below thier cost.

Mike Smith

See, you are assuming it's bogus when in fact it could be a price in british pounds which today would mean a price of 712 bucks, not too far off.

Here's the conversion
Results: 499 BRITISH POUND (GBP) = 712.4968 US DOLLAR (USD)
and here's the link
http://www.bloomberg.com/markets/currency/currcalc.html

I have no doubt it's real but I do suspect a foreign magazine with a foreign currency. I think someone here confirmed it too.

George
Go to Barnes and Nobel, purchase the magazine Digital Camera Dec
2000 issue with a picture of the 5 mega pixel showdown on the
cover. On page 75. there is an ad for a 707 in the upper left hand
corner for 499. Take that ad to Sears, Wal-mart, Best Buy, Circuit
City or anywhere that does price matching.

I went to my local Sears store. For 77 more dollars, I purchased a
over the counter replacement warranty (two years) that will give me
a new camera if mine ever fails to work properly, no questions
asked. For 576 dollars I have what most people pay twice that for.
Do what I did and you can have one also.

Better yet, and I am not doubting you mind you, please scan your reciept for proof because my neighbor works for sears and said that there is noway due to 25% match price limit on any product, and that would be cheaper than what they could get them for.

Again, if this happened, I still think it was someone who didn't know what they were doing, pounds or not. I mean, not knowing policies and so on. I have no doubt it's below their cost either.

As luck would have it, I bought this magazine last week. But, unfortunately my luck is always bad. Here in Canada there are no price matching programs available. I don't think Sears even sells the F707 here.

But I can confirm that the ad says exactly what it is said to have said. All prices are in US dollars, as far as I can see.

"A&M Photo World, your #1 trusted photo source. Sony DSC-F707, 5.24 MegaPixels, 2/3" CCD Screen, 2560x1920 Resolution. $499.99." The price is in big red letters.

Sorry, I don't have a scanner at home. I could take it to work tomorrow and scan it if anybody still wants it. Here is the link to their site:

Their site says it is $684.99 now. Probably a typo in the magazine. The fine print says they are not responsible for typos.

Also in the fine print it says: "Prices may reflect mail-in rebate."

I dunno... it is a mystery. Anyone feel like calling their toll free number? 1-800-347-8193.

Typo sounds right and if the guy that got it for that price really did get it, I'm glad for him. Hell, Sears can afford it and it's not like their service is anything to write home about. :)

I still don't get the Sears employee that gave him a camera for close to half price, but hey, I think it's cool and yes, I'd take a copy if that ad.

Either post it or e mail it to me directly (gif if you can or decent quality jpeg) and I'll go feel them up at my local Sears. :)

Well, the 700 bucks on their site is still a good price isn't it?

Dont get me wrong, 500 is better though. :)

George

Yes,

Mr Mayo boasts in the Olympus SLR forumn (Oly E-20 & Sony F707 comparison thread) that A&M refused to honor that price. What I mainly object to is not that Mr Mayo conned Sears out of a camera, but that he brags about it and encourages others to do the same.

Wait a couple of weeks until after the new models have been introduced. The price should drop quite a bit and you won't have to rely on questionable ads and price-matching that may or may not happen. Besides that, Sony may come out with an updated version of the 707, hopefully without the problems that we've all been reading about here on the STF.

Boasts? Hardly. If Sears is silly enough to encourage us to price match, I do not feel guilty for doing what they spend millions of dollars in advertising encouraging us to do. As far as A&M is concerned, I do not know why they ran that ad and then refused to honor it. I think they should be chastized for their continued daily efforts to tout low prices and then try to switch or upgrade to higher prices. If you refuse to be upgraded, they then suddenly are out of stock.

Conned? Remember This is a public place. I suggest you apologize before I turn this over to my attourney that is over paid for doing little or nothing.

Brags? One of us is foolish in their choices of words. I do not believe it is me.

Slander is a serious matter. My only wish was to help others with information they requested. Might I suggest you drop out of the conversation before you get into serious issues you do not want in your life.

What you did was represent a fact to Sears that you knew was not true in order to fool Sears into giving you a price break. No matter how you try to shift the blame to the victim or to an outside agent what you did was dishonest and shameful. Now you threaten me with a law suit for pointing out your dishonesty. Let me know if you disagree with the truthfulness of anything I've said here. I think I've pretty well represented the situation. I will be happy to offer you an apology right after you apologize to Sears for your actions.

I certainly hope this is the case! Plus, the retail price for the 707 has been slowly dropping, so it may actually be affordable after PMA (depending on how fast price drops filter down to the stores).

An excellent point :)

Darin
Either way, I think I'm gonna get a Sony :)

"Remember This is a public place. I suggest you apologize before I turn this over to my attourney that is over paid for doing little or nothing"

I think it's the other way around, last time I checked we have this thing called the freedom of speech as well as this being on the internet, we have the right to question your $499 as well as you telling us about it, or untill the moderator say's so...hehe.

I also agree, if you knew it was a typo, or it would not be honored by the company that put in the add, I think Sears should get there lawyers and you get your overpaid lawyers together and talk about it. Because I think your purchase was fraudulent in everyway. There my .02 worth now please dont sue me....please,please,please prettyplease.

Well, I dont think the man conned anyone. He used their policy and took advantage of it. There was an ad and they beat it, simple as that.

Of course, it's a lot easier to call someone a con man long distance.
None of my business mind you but I don't think he conned anyone.

I've done price matching before to get a good deal and that is how they set up their policy.

By the way, now everyone can stop bickering and get on with some photography, and show some respect to each other.

Cheers
