Bi-Weekly Wildlife Thread - March 1 thru 16

Dom_, That is an absolutely incredible shot, I love it! How close
were you when you took that shot?
Thanks for the compliment :)

I was at ~ 20 feet ! This bird is very cooperative letting me approach him at ~ 10 feet like you can see me here in action , photo taken by my friend Claude Fortin.

I should approach very slowly , laying on the ground , I appear smaller in this position ( but it's not a fact ;)) )

here's a kind of picture I can do at this distance ( no crop ! )

Thanks again !

Dom :)

Friday sat in the car, wound down the passenger window and took this hand held sitting in driver's seat.

PENTAX K10D, Software used: PENTAX PHOTO Laboratory Ver. 3.10
Exposure time: 1/15th - F number: 6.7, ISO: 400, Lens focal length: 500

A really god advert for SR, except it was off!

OK it is another Kingfisher (or likely to be the same as photographed before) and already posted - however I really got close this time :)

Thanks guys. At first I wasn't getting much use out of my 50-200, but since the weather has improved, I've been discovering many fun things I'd never imagined before I had a telephoto.

On vacation in Puerto Rico… This iguana was moving pretty fast, but slowed down for a second so I could get his mug shot (should have used more DOF… oh well).
1/125 sec, f5, ISO200, 63mm, P mode

Not totally wild, I guess… This lorikeet is from the San Diego Wild Animal Park (at least they call them wild).
1/60sec, f4.5, ISO800, 70mm, P mode

This guy was cruising around the harbor in Gloucester, MA (home).
1/1000sec, f4.5, ISO125, 70mm, Tv mode

And finally…

This is pretty close to a 100% crop of a kestrel (I guess) in the Everglades (sharpened in LR).
1/320sec, f13, ISO200, 70mm, Sv mode

All of these were taken with my K10D and lonely Sigma 17-70. Gotta spring for that zoom telephoto one of these days - if I could only decide on which one… I’m thinking maybe I’ll wait for the Pentax 70-300 if I can hold out that long (not sure I can).

Doug, that's amazing, I have the Sig17-70 and wouldn't even have thought to try it for wildlife, man how'd ya get that close to the Kestrel ( they look alot different then the ones I see here in Canada) .

Very well done, likeem all and I, personally, often shoot for a nice creamy background, bokeh as they say, it isolates the lizard so well.

It's always rewarding and intense to see a thight close-up of an animal, like these.
Golden Eagle and Red Fox(taken in a Zoo)
DS2,FA300mm4.5 with TC 1.4X-S,at f/5.6,ISO200,tripod

But don't forget that you can take the wildlife in their habitat, and it shows what they have to endue everyday,cold,rain,snow,sun...

Two example:

Here it looks cold:duck in St-Laurence River.
DS2,SMC Takumar 200mmf/4,ISO 200,at f/11-16,tripod,MLU

Here warmer.
Same settings but with Super Takumar 150mmf/4
