Here is a link to the "Heavy Metal" set. You can get it from Denny's Mfg. Kind of Pricey though, but nice to have.

You don't want to be throwing this thing up and down all day due to the weight. Mine is hung from the ceiling with chains..

Denny Mfg sells them and other Scenic Design props.

All great!

wonderfull light in the eyes!

in the first pic, I see a kind of halo around her hair... interesting effect, was that from a light behind her? or some sort of PP?

cheers

It's not so much a halo from post work, as it is the way the b/g is painted. It's a very light blue in the center, where her head is basically placed, and darker blue from there out. There was a AB400 for her hair camera right, but the halo effect is more of the b/g and the way it's painted.

I believe.

I guess this morning would be as good as a time to take some quick
shots.
Phillip, As others have said before thanks for sharing. I know it takes time to shoot and post those things for us here on the forum and all you get in return is a our gratitude. I can only imagine how your new customers must feel when they walk in and are overwhelmed with the choices they have to pick from... not from books but from a simple 5 minute walk through your space!

Looking good. Thanks for sticking around here and your continued inspiration.

Doug.

As a young photographer with little space and so much to learn, your constant willingness to share your knowledge is so appreciated. Thank you!

I have a few questions about your studio:

1) With so many b/g's to choose from, do you find yourself helping your clients choose?

2) How many of the b/g's did you conceptualize and build?

3) I love the brick b/g upstairs. Is that the original wall or did you dress it up?

4) The studio is huge and I love it, but do you get enough work to support a studio that large? If so, what types of marketing do you do?

Thanks for everything once again.

Good Questions...

1) With so many b/g's to choose from, do you find yourself helping your clients choose? I choose the b/g's I'm going to use, based on their wardrobe. Not the customer's. ;)

2) How many of the b/g's did you conceptualize and build? None. They've all be bought over the years. I'm hoping to add 1 or 2 more this year.

3) I love the brick b/g upstairs. Is that the original wall or did you dress it up? Everything upstairs is as is. Nothing has been done to enhance it. The walls are really brick, but have plaster all over them which covers the brick. I'm actually thinking of removing a large portion of plaster to expose more brick ;)

4) The studio is huge and I love it, but do you get enough work to support a studio that large? If so, what types of marketing do you do?

My monthy expenses will in all likelyhood be the same price or cheaper then when I was renting. I wasn't going to buy this bld unless I could get expenses close to what I was renting. When it comes time to retire, I'll have some commercial property for sale ;) -vs- throwing money away on renting.

I don't do a lot of marketing. My work usually brings the customers in. ALL my customers get FREE wallets with each order. No matter how many times they've been in. I find I get a lot of mileage from those Little Wallets.

Thanks I appreciate it.

They really do like the new site, -vs- my old bld... You feel like you can breathe due to the room. Been a while coming, but I'm home now ;) LOL

Congrats on your new digs and buying is the only way to go! While taking a look at your facilities(you are quite right, you won't have enough time in a day for awhile) I saw your white bkgd cyc. I don't know if it's because of being a commercial shooter all of my life but I've been used to having more of a radius in the curve compared to what you are doing. Perhaps you really don't need it to produce any tonal gradiants...3 1/2' curve is minimal w/a 5' curve preferred.

At any rate, you appear to have a lot of options in-house which will make your life easier. Rock and roll man...

Beautiful work as always Phillip. So yesterday was a cold, dreary day so I sat down and read all 216 pages of your posts. WOW man you should write a book. Very informative and helpful info. I am using a 5D as my main camera now but still prefer the skin tones and color from the 10D. I noticed in your posts that when you switched from your D60 you also had some reservations about your "upgrade". More megapix does not a bettter camera make!! Do you shoot raw all the time now? Which raw converter do you mainly use? Have you tried DPP ( which is what I use )? I haven't upgraded to CS2 so I can't try ACR converter. Maybe I have a white balance problem, don't know, never had problems with 10D. I totally agree with your lighting "measurements and theory", if it looks good push the button. Too much time spent measuring, proper ratios and such. Love your simplistic approach to lighting, it's my method also but I have not yet achieved the results you post. Looking forward to all your new posts.

Northern when you mention about my shaky migration from the D60 to my current weapon the MkII. I would have sold that camera for a 100.00 the next day after I got it. Thank goodness cooler heads on DPR in the canon room, prevented that. I didn't take the time to learn my gear. ;) My bad.

Yep, on lighting, I try to keep things VERY VERY simple. I'm a simple person. What can I say. I don't have the time to measure, move, measure, move, adjust when shooting from one spot to another in the house ;)

Hope the sun is out today for ya... ;)

Learning new equipment. Yeah I thought that thick collection of bound paper was used to level the table my computer sits on!!!!! On the raw converter front. What are you using mainly. If ACR have you calibrated it.

Taken upstairs.

550 w/box for main camera left
AB400 w/30 degree grid for hair, camera right.

Regards, Phillip @ Keepsake,
By "550" that's Canon talk for your Canon hot shoe flash, rignht? And the SB mentioned here, is that the small mini Q39? Thanks.
Beautiful work, Phil.

yeah, sorry. The 550 is the Canon 550 HotShoe and the photoflex mini SB.

I guess this morning would be as good as a time to take some quick
shots.

Store front windows will be replaced this spring, as soon as
weather settles down.

Main studio area, then my work area and reception area for
customers. Thats around 95% done. Just looking for a love seat
and coffee table for that area.

Dressing room is done. Frame room, still lacks an Island style
working table so we can put the frame corners and mat selections
down with prints. Carpet was put down this week.

Upstairs: A few tweaks still needed, but not much more I'm going to
do up there except add props as I run across them on the road ;)

2500 sq.ft downstairs and up.

All I know is there is never enough time in the day. ;)

Regards, Phillip @ Keepsake,
Wow, there is a mother load of ideas in these shots and I thank you for taking the time to make and post these images. I have an area that is probably close in size and shape to the view shown in your image " studio18.jpg" that is just sitting there (well, actually it is full of junk but not being used). Do you know the approx. dimensions of this particular area? Thanks again, Phil.
