So most of my woes have been cleared up but here's a big one. I shoot almost exclusively RAW and RAWShooter won't see my Raw imagews fromt he K10. ARGHHHHH! They're only PEFs boo hoo. Doesn't see DNGs either. And I have tried to make friends with Lightroom and I just don't like it. Seems like bloatware, huge and excessive and slow and unwieldly and about four programs masquerading as one. I want to carry on using RAWshooter, Photoshop and ThumbsPlus. Are there any alternatives or am I about to be thrown kicking and screaming into Lightroom? I know damn well they ain't gonna support it in RAWShooter.

Thanks for any good ideas.

Really? If the thing that comes on the CD with the camera is anything to go by, hmmm. Well less said the better! And I just don't know that I could tell people that I use Silkypix with a straight face, I do have my pride! And looking at their site, the English is so appalling and they keep talking about adding 'taste'. What is that all about?

Thanks for that advice, I might take you up on it but in the mean time, any other thoughts?

Phil, you can continue to use RawShooter and Photoshop, also maybe Thumbsplus. Just do some searching on this forum. Things to look for as follows:

1. The easy one is Photoshop if you have CS or CS2. Download the new version 3.7 Adobe DNG Convertor. If you have Photoshop CS2, just install the new raw plug-in and have support for both DNG and PEF files. If you have CS, you can't use the plug-in but you can convert your PEF images to DNG's and use them, although you have to be careful using the WB presets as they will be wrong. Use AsShot WB or manually select WB. If you have Photoshop 7 or earlier, you are SOL unless you are a programmer and want to convert linearized DNG raws into 16 bit per channel TIFF's with a colour profile, which can be used by any 16 bit colour managed editor such as old PS.

2. For RawShooter, there was a patch posted on this forum so it would work with Adobe DNG Converted images.

3. For ThumbsPlus, I didn't know it was a raw viewer, too? If it is, they will likely update it to work with the new K10D PEF's and DNG's.

4. As to viewing thumbnails in Windows Explorer, there is a little registry patch listed that will allow you to see DNG thumbnails but it doesn't work with PEF's. The patch doesn't let you see metadata such as EXIF info using Properties/Summary/Advanced though.

Just do your homework with a search on the above four points.

Hi Phil, very shortly Phase One is supposed to be releasing an updated version of Capture One. I used C1 almost exclusively for converting raw images from my DS, but it was not compatible with my new K100 or the K10. The workflow in C1 is very streamlined and quick and I loved the results I got with it. I definately plan on getting the updated version, which will be compatible with both the K100 and K10.

Try SILKYPIX I'm sure you won't lose to much self respect as long as your not wearing SILKYPANTIES while using it. It works, so put on a pair of pants and try it.

I've been playing with the trial version of Bibble Pro and think it's great.

It uses Noise Ninja as a noise reduction plug-in, one of the best, but also has many other great features.
Try the trial version.

of Bibble is coming. We don't know when yet but as it stands now, I prefer the LightRoom I got over the current version of Bibble and I'm using primarily LightRoom and then Bibble for noise.

Silkypix is not like the cd version. I bought it a while back and use it almost exclusively, it's pretty good and they do upgrades petty regularly. However I would still prefer RSE if it was there. Lightroom is just too slow. I have tried bibble a few times but don't like it. ACR is ok . Capture one pro was fantastic but way beyond my pocket.

Hi again Phil. If you look through this thread, you can find where a patch has been created so that you can use RAW Shooter on DNGs created from the K10D. This will mean that you have to convert the PEFs to DNG, but at least it will work. If you used the free version, there is a patch in that thread somewhere as there is for the paid version. If you had the paid version, you are also entitled to v1.0 of Adobe Lightroom; you should have been sent an email.

HOpe this helps.

Maybe you should swallow your pride, and even make the effort to read the help files (which admittedly are written by a non-native speaker but yet mostly make sense). The program is well worth it.

By the way a "taste" is a used defined setting.

Would it be possible to further modify the file so that it recognizes not just DNGs, but PEFs too? My knowledge on hex editors is exactly zero, but my thinking is that if it can recognize the DNGs, there should at least be a chance. Of course, I might be miles off too.

I just use the Pentax picture browser that came with the K10D. Open pic in it and use "save as" to convert to jpeg or tiff. Then use it in whatever photo editing program I want. If anyone asks, I tell them I used the Pentax program. I still have RSE/RSP but think the Silky does a little better job of converting. Reds are better. Speed seems similar between Pentax and RSE if used as above.
thanks

Help! I must be doing something wrong. Downloaded the patch but not sure how to "install" it over my existing Essentials program. I keep getting error message.

Thanks.
