I had a back order on Warehouse Express for the Nikon View Pro software that was press released last year.

Earlier today I received the following email from Warehouse Express:
--

Dear Customer,

Thank you for placing an order with us.

Unfortunately we have just been informed by Nikon that the view pro software has now been discontinued. There is no direct alternative. Your order has been cancelled and no money has been taken from your card at this time. If you would like some more information please contact us on 01603 486413.

Kind regards,

I don't see the news anywhere else yet.

Has anybody heard anything more on Nikon View Pro?

Maybe now is the time to jump on the Adobe Lightroom band wagon.

Hello all,

Obviously this is not the best news you could get. And although I own Capture NX for the PP I did like NV6 for its capability tranfer and render.

So what is the best alternative that has the capability to render the NEF's as close as possible to the ones of Nikon?

ACDSEE and Irfanview are nowhere near and haven't tried many others.

I would like to have the abilty to play some slideshows on my large screen or output to my TV.

Cheers,

Spiros

Let's just hope they continue to update the free Nikon View to accomodate new cameras. That would do for me.

Anyway, perhaps this is more to do with WarehouseExpress wanting to get a lot of old and stale backorders off their books, and less to do with an official decision from Nikon to ditch Nikon View Pro.

I use Photo Mechanic. If you use Capture NX, a full-size, high-quality JPEG is embedded in your NEF. Photo Mechanic can extract this JPEG to speed through thumbnails. It also uses the embedded JPEG for email, etc. As an unintended side effect of using the embedded JPEGs, Photo Mechanic displays your images as you edited them in NX. For me, this means not having to go back and save additional JPEGs when I want to quickly email a photo or create a gallery.

The viewers that have built-in RAW decoders won't show your NEF properly if you have edited it elsewhere and not saved a JPEG/TIFF copy-- they just re-process the raw file using the "as-shot" WB.

In the sense that you can't "miss" what you never had, you are correct. I will miss the update to this software. I enjoy using View, mostly because I don't know enough about Bridge.
Can't say I'm going to miss it :)
