I've asked this question before, but until I received my 990 today, I couldn't get a definitive answer. The question was whether the Sync cord would interfere with installation on a 3rd party flash bracket. The bracket I have is a stroboframe quickflip 350. 950 users of this bracket had to grind out a portion of the bracket to provide room for the sync cord as the sync connector was inline with the bracket. As these photo's show, there is plenty of room for the sync connector. We will no longer have to deal with "proprietary" flash brackets with the 990.

Sorry for the improper links.

That sure is a BIG bracket.

Actually, Bill, I've grown to like the SK-E900. For one thing, I can rotate the lens and the flash head and use the camera in waist-level mode (with the Xtend-a-View hood).

The real gouge was for the hot shoe/sync cord gizmo; I thought the bracket was a good deal for only about $20 more.

The problem I found with the SK-E900 was shadows behind people. When I used it to take portraits of people, the side mounting of the flash would produce a very noticable shadow behind them. This isn't a problem when the subject is far away or not near a wall, but is a problem in most other circumstances. I'm keeping the SK-E900 I have as it still has its uses, but I'll probably use the stroboframe more.

I'm not using a hotshoe. I'm using the shoe that comes with the Stroboframe and a Nikon SC-18 cable. I shot 150 photo's with it today at my kids birthday party and it worked great.
Great news! What hotshoe/cable are you using?

I don't have my 950 anymore, so I can't compare it to my 990, but, I would say Nikon should get some credit. Looks like they moved the sync socket forward so the cord no longer interferes with a bracket. I think the tripod screw socket is moved back too, which helps. Seems like the simple miss-placement of a couple of items on the 900 and 950 caused a lot of problems for everyone. PatiO.

I'm looking for an SC-18 or 19 synch cord too. Let us know if you find some.
Stroboframe makes smaller brackets, like the Press T. I ordered that
today from B&H Photo. Now, if I could only find the synch cord, SC-18.
Anyone know who has them?

I already tried with my old stroboframe to my 950. With hassy or a NikonF3 with motor drive, you are okay but balance is out of whack with a light camera.

Instead, I suggest you should try shooting with one hand while handholding the flash with the other. Some of you will find the simple solution better than various contraption being suggested. Here are the accessories you need.

I recently made one small modification to my flash setup, I cut the sync cord to the Nikon adapter in half and spliced in phono mini-plug connectors. This allows me to use another mini-plug extension cord if I want to stay wired off camera.

By using the last few inches (including the connectors) of a phonoplug extension cord, it simplified the extension of the flash adapter because I didn't have to fuss with soldering into the phono plugs themselves, just deal with connecting the nikon wire to the extension cord wires.

I also wrapped the plugs in velcro and glued a thin strip of velcro onto the back of the movable section of the Versatec bracket, which holds the plugs in place nicely.

I hope some of these ideas are useful to you.
