Hi all,

I am having problems with updating from windows update site.. I keep receiving this error:

"Files required to use Windows Update are no longer registered or installed on your computer. To continue:

1. Register or reinstall the files for me now (Recommended)
2. Let me read about more steps that might be required to solve the problem"

I choose option 1. then it downloads 100% file and registers 100% and then sends me back to
1. Express install
or
2. custom Install

i keep going round in circles.. I never used to have any problems with updating and most were through auto updates.. I have reinstalled SP2 from cd as have seen this on a thread posted on the web from a guy that suffered the same problem but did not work for me..

I have seen posts regarding this matter on the web but have yet seen any posts from users that have fixed the problem....Any help is greatly appreciated...

Pull the other one, it's got bells on....

was this recently re-installed on to a new hard drive?

Could try a repair install with the original XP disk..then do SP2..

Up to you on this one..

Tried system restore?

No, it started with a defrag program that found errors. checkdisk would not run and system restore had been turned off.. I then ran a virus check(I do this every 2 days) and found 2 worms and 2 trojans so whether this is the cause I dont know..but removed the viruses

Tried system restore?
had been switched off(not by me) I am the only user on this puter..me thinks a worm has been the culprit...
I am looking right now on web for info on using recovery console..

I had this exact problem some time ago. Going around and around. I
don’t remember what I did.

Here are some links from people who had better luck.

Nand.
Thanks nand....I have seen all the links you pointed google at... I seem top have a slightly different problem to most there but I have re-registered all the files thay talk of and even re-installed SP2 and installed the windows update client but still no luck...

Some have reported that simply re-registering the MSXML3.DLL seems to fix the
problem.
1. Click Start.
2. Choose Run.
3. In the Run box, type: regsvr32 MSXML3.DLL
Press okay

If that hasn't helped you may need to re-registered some more files:

1. Click Start.
2. Choose Run.
3. In the Run box, type (pressing okay after each one) :-

net stop wuauserv

Repeat for the following:
regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
regsvr32 wuweb.dll
regsvr32 MSXML3.dll
regsvr32 qmgr.dll
regsvr32 qmgrprxy.dll
regsvr32 jscript.dll

Hope this helps. It worked for a friends laptop recently.
