Wide-Angle Lenses

Hi Folks: I will be shooting many architectural subjects at close-quarters, along with a mix of miscellaneous context shots. I am certain that I will need to have good wide-angle performance, and the widest non-fisheye lens I can afford.

Tilt/shift lenses are nice, but the ones I have seen so far are just not wide enough. I think I'd rather correct the perspective in software.

I have been shopping the Nikon D80, D70s, and D50. I would like to get my first lens/es at the same time. A reasonable utility zoom appears to be the 18-70 kit zoom. however, I am thinking that I should get a good prime focus wide angle lens for most of my subjects.

I appreciate recommendations... Thanks!

Architectural meaning, indoors or outdoors?

The kit lens is a bit slow if you plan indoor shooting. Count on needing a tripod.

Personally, I'd recommend the Nikkor 12-24. Take a look at Tokina also, people give it good marks and it's about half the price.

The 18-70 is a good performer, but more as an "everyday" lens, IMO. For indoor architecture, I really think you need to go wider.

My vote goes for the Sigma 10-20 but you'll get all the info you need by doing a search on this forum as the subjects been done to death.

I was hoping to hear comments on prime focus wide angle lenses.

I'm thinking that with pixels to spare on the D80, I would like to rest assured that the image is as flat, rectilinear, and distortion-free as possible, with no light fall-off toward the edges. (Fisheye is out.)

As I mentioned originally, the kit zoom lens is what I was hoping to use merely for context shots.

Thanks!

Between the physics and the marketplace there aren't any really good, really wide primes for DX camera -- you'll have to dig through the innumerable threads comparing the Nikkor 12-24 DX to the Tokina and the Sigmas.

You're heading for zoom-land. I'm partial to the 12-24 DX, myself.

My vote goes for the Nikon 12-24 DX. I have one and my brother who has his own architectural firm in Phuket uses his 12-24 DX on his D2x.

is that Milan?
i was there last week and took the same pic :-)
i used the Toki 12-24

A REALLY wide prime, for distortion free, many choices.... whats your budget?
Is this like inside or outside a building?

Yes, of course it is, the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele, the original shopping mall:

Michael, enjoyed looking at your various real estate photos. Preferred the interior shots to the exterior. You did an excellent job with the lighting. I personally try to make my wideangle shots look 'normal'. I would have moved back a little bit and used an intermediate focal length setting. But it is a matter of personal preference. One other thing, I would have corrected some verticals and horizontals with PTLens.
