Refurbished Epson R2400, good or bad idea to purchase it?

I see that Epson sells refurbished R2400.
Does anyone have experience with a refurbished printer from Epson?
thanks
I bought a refurbished R800 from Epson. No problems, works excellent, and could not tell it from a new unit.

I would NOT consider a refurbished Epson Printer from (or refurbished by) someone other than Epson.

I bought a refurbished Epson Stylus Color 900 about 2000, or 2001. It had a problem indicating "out of ink" with new cartridges. After several discussions with Tech Support, and tests that didn't fix it they sent me a replacement and some more ink cartridges. I sent the original printer back and the replacement is still working OK. I'd be happy to buy other refurbished items. In fact, I've bought four refurbished HP computers over the years. They all worked fine.

I've had multiple issues with buying Epson refurbished units. It was obvious to me that these COULD NOT have been tested!

It's a gamble, but they will take them back without problem. Just a pain taking them to the delivery office.

If the refurb comes from Epson then I would definitely buy it. In fact, personally, I would prefer it over a new one. If it's been "referbed" by a third party I would stay away. Miles away. Use some of the savings to buy an extended warranty...

I am wondering if the printers refurbished by Epson are truly refurbished Epson and not send that to a third-party contractor contracted by Epson to repair their printers.. Many of these third-party contractors do a ”substandard job" of repairing products, Epson I would believe has all of the control checks in place but you may not be able to get everything

What are you basing your opinion on. Do you have some documented facts or links you could share.

Which Sub Contractors are you suggesting that Epson Contracts with to refurbish their Epson printers.

I purchased a refurbished 2200 from the Epson site last year as a back-up and it has worked just fine. Well, as fine as a 2200 works. (Let's not get into the ink switching related issues.)

Vernon,

welcome to the 21st centry..its called outsourcing. I work for a company, people send things in for repair and yes, some of those items are sent to a 3rd party we hire to fix them.

Outsoure companies usually hire cheaper labor (then what the parent company may pay) and cost the parent company less, more profit for the parent company, profit for the outsource company..win win for all but consumers and displaced workers (sometimes)

Surely you realize (in this same Century) that since your Company has arranged for and selected the 3rd party to fix the item that your company continues to be in control and have complete responsibility for the final repair service. That does NOT relieve your Company from the entire responsibility for the quality and completeness of the repairs to "fix" the item.

Your discussion is in effect actually "sub contracting" since (in this discussion) Epson selected the company to perform the service and continue to have control of and be responsible for the serviced (refurbished) item as well as any Warranty that applies to the product.

This is completely different from the case where Epson could sell the "non working" product to ANY individual or company and that individual or company has complete responsibility and control of the refurbish process.

This is the situation that I would definitely NOT consider a refurbished product. It leaves another "loop hole" for just "wiping the dust off the case and shipping out as a refurbished product.

In my opinion, it would be a very RARE situation for a 2nd or 3rd party or company to be more qualified to refurbish a product than the Original Company that Manufactured the product. Also, the Manufacturing Company will normally have a devoted "Brand/Model Loyalty" for their product....

PS.

I do not mean to imply or have knowledge that Epson has or uses a third-party company repair or refurbish its printers ,I do not know who actually refurbishes or repairs their printers.

In the original reply was just a thought but in today's world many companies to use third-party companies to do their work is cheaper for the company allegedly, saves the company money and increases their profit so it is a win-win for the company and the investors.

I feel in some instances these third-party companies may not do as good of a job as the company they are contracted to do work for would do. Yes companies do have the reputation to protect and were put in some safeguards to prevent problems are in proper pairs but I'm sure with all the safeguards in place lemons could slip thru.

I have worked for a company is then have contracted out to third-party companies to do work that was originally done internally and a third parties usually do not do as diligent of a job as a parent company would have (IMO)

FWIW - I bought my refurbished Epson from a computer store in Santa Monica. It came in an Epson box. Trouble shooting over the phone was direct to Epson Tech Support. The replacement printer came from Epson by UPS, and I returned the faulty printer to Epson by UPS. I have no idea if they subcontracted out the actual hardware checkout and refurbishing. But, They acted as if they were directly responsible and all my interactions were directly to Epson. My recollection is that the people I spoke with were in Torrance and/or Long Beach Calif. (Los Angeles area) I believe the replcement printer came from a warehouse in another state, possibly Indiana.

I wouldn't get all wrapped up in this subcontracting issue. It might be interesting, but it's their internal operation, and there's nothing you can do about it anyway.

I've been looking at the refurbed 2400's as well. For those of you that bought Epson refurbs:

1. Original printer box and packing materials?

2. Did the printer look new or was it scratched, dinged, etc.?

3. Used inks installed or did it come with a new inkset?

4. Any software?

Thanks.

Kev

The printer will look like new, with new pigments. Would be hard pressed to tell it was a refurb.
