USB 2.0 in Canon G2?

Since USB 1.1 runs at only 12Mbits/s and the new USB 2.0 runs at up to 480Mbits/s, I'm curious if anyone knows if the G2's USB port runs at the faster USB 2.0 speed. From what I've read, USB2.0 has been around long enough that it's possible Canon is using it in the G2.

Since I don't have a USB port on my older G3 Macintosh, I have to buy a USB PCI card, and I'm unsure which type of USB card to get. If USB 1.1 is what Canon used in the camera, I might as well save the difference in cost and just get a USB 1.1 card for my Mac. For just transfering a few pics at a time, the difference isn't important, but I plan to put a 1GB microdrive into the camera, so the difference in transfer speeds would be dramatic.

Canon's website just says "USB." Anyone know more specifically what version?

Thanks!

Dave

I have the S40 but i'm sure i can shed some light onto the subject. connecting the G2 directly will run down the batteries, which I myself wont do regardless of which camera i may have. I have recently upgraded to USB2.0. I bought a Adaptec 5100 6 port USB2.0 pci card and a Acomdata Muti format flashcard reader w/ USB2 enabled. I believe the acomdata is the only card reader that has USB2, right??

Current USB1.1 is pretty slow, it took 1.5minutes to load up 75mb from the acomdata from a sandisk 256mb CF card. I dont even want to clock it when i put in my 1GB microdrive in. So i'm very glad to have USB2.0 (480mbps vs. 12mbps). hope this sheds some light.

Why not just buy a card reader with 1394 interface which I believe is a standard on Mac ?

Since 1394 isn't standard on older macs, I have to buy some sort of PCI card, and I could get a firewire one instead of USB.

But both of you raise an interesting question: why is it so important to get a card reader? Especially if the G2 has and runs USB 2.0, I would think that downloading even a full 1GB microdrive directly from the camera wouldn't be that taxing on the camera's batteries because it would be so fast.

Hi,

G2 USB is 1.1.

The transfer rate of the card itself would never be 480 Mbit/s so USB2.0 would be useless though would theoretically only increase the transfer speed to the speed of the card. The only thing faster than USB1.1 is a PCMCIA transfer at the speed of the card.

My experience with a G2 on USB 1 has been about 1.2Mbytes/sec. This is equivalent to 8X with 1X = 150 KB/sec. According to Phil's tests, some cards can read/write faster than 8X, but from his tests, there are faster cards that could make use of some of the USB2 bandwidth. Unfortunately I don't have a USB 2 to test.

I suspect that the G2 may not have USB 2 which is still pretty new. Although the G2 has only been available since Fall 2001, its design phase concluded quite a while before that. If the G2 did have USB 2 you'd expect Canon would have said so in their promotional literature - it would be a positive selling point. GKL

My way of thinking is since you have to buy a card, buy the USB 2.0 and get it over with. Even if you don't use it on the G2 other things are coming out all the time. If you update your computer you can always transfer it, besides we're not talking a lot of money and it would be backward compatible with the 1.1
